I had a friend who was in a coma for 3 weeks from a car crash. He is still here to this day. I whole Heartily believe Damar will survive it might not be in a week or 2 weeks but I really think he will wake up & survive a miracle 🙏🏽 Let’s continue to pray.

Maybe we shouldn't have 24 year olds risking their health in the prime of their lives for our amusement? While the old owners make billions, this guy makes less than a few million and he is on the front lines for no reason. Make the owners take these blows. They are getting paid more right?

My daughter had a cardiac arrest during her PE class at school in 7th grade (4 years ago now). Not caused by a hard hit, but a not yet detected heart condition called Long QT Syndrome. Like Hamlin, she had a wrong event happen at the right place. Her school had an AED on site, teachers who immediately performed CPR and knew what to do. EMT got there within minutes also. She was estimated to be down about 6 minutes. She never had to be sedated at the hospital but her recovery was slow. Her 'wakeup' was terrifying. She looked like she was having seizures. Her short term memory and fine motor skills for days/weeks afterwards were not right. Every 2 minutes we had to remind her what day it was and where she was. She couldn't pick up a pencil without dropping it. Doctors explained that the minute the brain is deprived of oxygen, the brain cells begin to die. So effectively, she had brain damage, but luckily she was young and healthy and her cells ultimately recovered. She went on to continue to play sports after having an ICD put in her chest.. I hope the length of time Hamlin was down was not too long and he can make a full recovery, but I expect it will take some time. Prayers for him!

Assuming the medical staff was right on site I assume they had oxygen tank on deck hopefully. Hope he makes it out. His wake up will be extraordinary news and I hope this gets many people to look at all aspects of their health as a blow to the chest isn’t the only way to suffer cardiac arrest.

I just hope this doesn't end his career! Such a young man. I can't believe this happened at all! NFL players are modern day gladiators who put their lives/health on the line every day, every year from off season to camps to the regular and post-season. We need to appreciate these athletes more in my opinion.

He was padded up and HE applied the tackle -- he was not "hit". Moreover, had it been the damage-control drivel that these "MD's" came out with suspiciously shortly after the incident, he would not have stood back up and been perfectly fine for a few seconds -- he would have remained floored.

As an anesthesiologist,in the cath lab, we induce v-fib; I placed patients in this state; sedated; paralyzed; intubated; brain function monitored; normal pH, SaO2 94-99%; allow paralytic agents to wear off. Absent catastrophic brain injury, they would return to normal after a few hours. Amazing.

NFL shoulder pads have a rigid chest plate that disperses the force of any impact over a larger area. If Hamlin were speared with a helmet, it would make more sense, but blaming it on a padded shoulder hit to his padded chest plate is sus.

apparently, therapeutic hypothermia -- i.e. dramatically reducing the body's temperature -- was part of Damar's early treatment at the hospital. Dr. Brian, any chance you could do a video explaining this form of treatment for cardiac arrest?

    • Ze Doktor
      Ze Doktor 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Seems pretty simple. Chilling the body slows the metabolic rate and therefore reduces the demand for oxygen in the brain. Which means that you don’t need a fully developed heartbeat to supply enough blood.
Pretty low tech and super clever.

I believe they also did that in the Milwaukee Protocol case when a 15 year old girl got bit by a bat and her parents brushed it off until she was symptomatic. They lowered her body temperature to 35 degrees I believe. She was the first survivor of rabies after symptoms developed (had been a death sentence until her). The story is interesting! Rabies is terrifying....

This happened back in my teens to a kid playing catcher who got his in the chest by a breaking curve ball. He passed out, went into cardiac arrest and took an ambulance ride, he survived. The shock to the chest confuses the heart's pumping reflex and no blood is pumped to your brain.

Dr. Peter McCullough pointed out in a recent paper that since the shots were deployed, 1598 athletes have suffered cardiac arrest, with 1101 of them dying. In order to find 1101 similar athlete deaths he has to examine a 38-year period.
Before 2021 the typical number of annual high profile sports cardiac events was about 40 per year. That rate is now over 20x the pre Covid vax era.

Eriksen's incident at the EUROs was caused by a congenital heart condition that gave him arrhythmia. The medical team was on him immediately because everyone saw him stagger for no apparent reason before collapsing. Hamlin's incident was caused by the impact to his chest. I imagine that it took a little while before they realized that Hamlin wasn't down because of a head injury and first then removed the gear and checked his heart. Can anyone tell me how many minutes passed from Hamlin collapsed and until CPR and defibrillation was started? I hope Hamlin makes a full recovery and his family have all the support and love they need

Great description. I’m a Firefighter/Paramedic and was watching it at work, with my coworkers. My immediate reaction was that the hit to the chest put him in to v-fib, secondary to commotio cordis. Like you said, it’s rare to have happen. It’s even rarer to see it live in front of you. I have good optimism that the early cpr will prove effective in him having a good outcome. Thanks again, and may God watch over him and those caring for him.

I read about this sort of horrible thing happening with contact sports and my heart goes out to Damar's friends and family. I saw a follow up video clip where Damar's uncle stated that his nephew had suffered a second arrest requiring resuscitation within an hour of arriving at the hospital. My question: Is a secondary cardiac arrest indicative of commotia cordis after having been shocked into a normal rhythm, or would a second episode indicate something else? What could that something else be???f

2 questions from a medical student: How common is it for an otherwise healthy young person to end up in critical condition for several days following CPR for cardiac arrest? I watched this game live with my parents and I was immediately thrown off when Damar grabbed onto Bengals 28 (Joe Mixon) and used his body to pull himself up. It seemed desperate in that brief moment and not seconds later he was on the ground. I have been losing sleep over Damar and I pray for him, his mother & family, his team & coach, the Bangels players (most of all Tee Higgins), and the country/teams worrying over him. He was SO young, and with God's grace he will survive but I don't know if he will ever play football again. Though I think activism could give him a new purpose.

I feel emotional seeing Hamlin collapsed, I remember the event when my husband had cardiac arrest in 2020. I just took a picture of him holding our dog then within 50 seconds as we walk by to the hall he just collapsed 😢. That time it just the two of us with the dog, I quickly felt cold and frozen the moment I saw him on the floor but quickly did CPR and at the same time called 911. I was shattered seeing him like that, and lucky the ambulance came within 4-5minutes and they continued to resuscitate him, it last about 10-15mins😢. Lucky the Lord gave his life back again and I am so thankful and grateful for his Life that he’s still with me until now. It was the darkest moment of my life but I didn’t give up and be brave to face reality. Pray…. that is the most powerful that you can do for your love one. God bless everyone!❤

Just wanted to say thank you Dr for your viewpoint. Being short concise, and understandable so that us non medical ppls can get it. Congrats 🎉 on your views. Prayers for Damar 🙏🏾. Those EMTs deserve an award 🏅

We should all pray for all people who are going through this also.

I agree. I have been watching Brian's videos for awhile now, and I was looking forward to hearing his input on the situation.

Yes that is one differential diagnosis. But it is irresponsible to rule out other potential causes. Especially considering he would be the first football player to suffer this in history. And there has been an exponential increase in on field cardiac arrests recently.

Thank you for having common sense, the fact people keep telling me you shouldn't blame the vaccine for the millionth time after millionth example is getting to be quite the spectacle to witness

As an anesthesiologist, I placed patients in this state daily; sedated; paralyzed; intubated; brain function monitored; normal pH, SaO2 94-99%; paralytic agents allowed to wear off. Absent catastrophic brain injury, they would return to normal after a few hours. Amazing.

First off, prayers to this man and his family. May God place his mighty healing hands on him and restore him back to full health. WHY is NO ONE including the medical community even acknowledging the realm of possibility that this could in fact be what this dr “shall do no harm” is saying what it is most definitely was not with the very little information he has just like the rest of us! Seems peculiar (trust the science). The SCIENCE says, at this point we can NOT rule out the realm of possibility that this could have been to a prior medical decision he had recently made for himself. Especially, given the 100’s of 1000’s of examples of the same exact “phenomenon” happening to members of the sports community around the world in the last two years that never occurred in the history of professional, collegiate and high school athletic sports prior to the introduction of the _ _ _ ? Yet, even if he did die as a result of a recent medical decision WE will never know about it! God Bless Everyone out their regardless of whether they believe that Christ is coming soon or not!

For those that are impressed with his sesquipedalianism I recommend power thesaurus.
