I used to be an atheist. I hated the Christian God as I had a very bad upbringing. One day I had a very bad day, and I prayed. Cussing God out and screaming at Him to take everything. A month later my mother passed, three days after that my cat (who saved me from self ending) was diagnosed with terminal stomach cancer and two weeks after that as I was going to take care of mother's affairs, getting off the plane my wife calls me and tells me that she had preeclampsia and our son was being born nearly three months mature and I was 2000 miles away. Upon returning, my cat was given 24 hours to live. I prayed again, but this time I begged for His mercy. I awoke in the middle of the night to a shadow in the corner of the room that disappeared when I turned my head. My cat sitting and looking up as if someone was speaking to her. I then fell back to sleep. My cat lived another month and on the way to the vet to have her put down, as it was time. I prayed again. I asked Him to help me again, because I couldn't bare putting my best friend to sleep. She passed on the table before they could give her the shot. I immediately began attending church with my wife. My son is perfectly healthy with no problems from prematurity. I was baptized and now follow Christ. God is great!

A genuine question, I’ve always wondered if Ezekiel 33:11 is the Lord talking to Israel or Him saying this for everyone. Upon returning, my cat was given 24 hours to live. I prayed again, but this time I begged for His mercy. I awoke in the middle of the night to a shadow in the corner of the room that disappeared when I turned my head. My cat sitting and looking up as if someone was speaking to her. I then fell back to sleep. My cat lived another month and on the way to the vet to have her put down, as it was time. I prayed again. I asked Him to help me again, because I couldn't bare putting my best friend to sleep. She passed on the table before they could give her the shot. I immediately began attending church with my wife. My son is perfectly healthy with no problems from prematurity. I was baptized and now follow Christ. God is great!

Everything in the Old Testament is symbolic regarding Christ and the New Covenant. Perhaps it’s our definition of “love” that is faulty. Love doesn’t mean total pacifism and non hostility. Tough love is a real thing.
Slavery existed as it served as symbolism that we should be “slaves” to God (i.e God is our master and we do His will).
Killing happened as it served as symbolism of how the righteous and the wicked will be separated come judgment day and the righteous will live separate from the rest. They shall inherit the Earth.
Lastly, the Hebrews were selected to be a “chosen people” as symbolism that the righteous are the chosen people, and we must be different from those who are of the world.
I hope this makes sense. The Old Testament was more strict and physical representation of higher spiritual truths which Christ brought.

The problem with human beings is that we try and understand God from OUR own way of thinking. Understanding God is damn near impossible because he is the Highest Being. It's like how we are the 'creators' of robots and program them our way but they will never understand why we eat, love, laugh, get sick, fight, hate, take a dump etc...
