- I guess I'm really doing this!
I'm going to begin a device trial and try out the DIY thing with other amputees!
Here is the link to the check socket.

Yes, there am quite a few conditions to participate in this trial.
The thing is, this device is for a very specific amputation. It isn't a situation of one device suits all. That's part of the issue with trying to service the partial hand prosthetics market. There are like 30 different possible amputation variations, and each one requires its own setup and design. This design could conceivably meet the needs for 7 of those variations by deleting 1 or more mechanical fingers. Right now, this trial is for only 1 of those variations.

I’m a physical therapist and you are one of my favorite people. I hate that insurance companies are still defaulting to the hook and cable prosthesis and the fact that gap between that and a more functional device is tens of thousands of dollars. Your mechanical hand is a wonder and something like this should be the standard for people with limb differences. The electronic limbs are great, but the technology is way too expensive to be mainstream, and your mechanical tech is a necessary mid tier solution that should be available to everyone. I hope you are able to continue to make this a reality!
Not an amputee here, but if you choose an applicant from the San Antonio area I would be more than willing to donate my time and tools to help them complete the project. I’m really only short a 3d printer.
Sounds like you get a new tool! Super Fast Matt recently did a review of what he feels is the best consumer model. I trust his judgement.
Email me and I'll as my channel sponsors what they can do. No promises, but I'll ask.
I have more than one 3D printer, I am more than willing to donate one for a good cause. Though I would need the recipient to pay for shipping.
@@missingpartsclub If the user is willing to pay to ship, I am willing to donate a 3D printer. I have more than one I could give away.
Just to reiterate in case there is a misunderstanding.
I myself am not an amputee nor do I know any that fit the requirements, and I am not trying to get a 3d printer. I however would be happy to give a hand in or to totally handle the assembly process for someone who isn’t able to themselves due to lack of tools or ability. I would want them obviously to be as much a part of the process as possible as I know I would want to be if the situation was reversed.
As far as 3d printing the socket I would not be able to help with that portion without having a printer myself, and it seems like the recipient would need to be very hand-on with that process in order for Ian to help them get the most out of it.
If it works out that having a 3D printer myself would be of the most help I can look into that, but it is still early in the process for Ian and we don’t know where qualified applicants will be chosen from. So I’m just volunteering my time, tools, and assistance in advance in case it’s needed.
Im not an amputee, this is just too cool not to watch.
You're not an amputee... Yet. I can help you with that. Give me your location.
I kinda want a hand extension like this
Me neither. I always watch his videos though.
I want robot arms
Same. If I knew someone with this specific problem, I'd refer them to this video.
I want to volunteer! Ah shoot, I have two hands.... BRB.
You know that part of the video where I'm hitting the camera and shaking my head and hand NO! That's for you! No! Bad Snaaky005! Bad! Go to your room!
@@missingpartsclubtoo bad i already did it. I hope you have your prototypes ready
so cool you can do this with out a huge corp backing you it really shows you how greedy our system is i hope you can get some backing and continue your work
How does it show anything about corporate greed? If anything it shows you don't need massive organizations to solve problems, literally nothing about profits...
@@RayJackson88lets just hope the corpos dont patent it and do nothing
@@RayJackson88 ..that's the point. You can solve problems without massive organisations, but massive organisations require all this funding and investment to produce similar results sold at a higher-than-fair price.
@@RayJackson88 Anyone with the skill and desire to collaborate on scaling up projects like this should have the means to do so, and funding that in a way that is intended to decentralize medical devices instead of generating profits is difficult (if not impossible) under capitalism.
@RayJackson88 I wonder if you interpreted the original comment wrong? 💀
Dude, you've been single-handedly (heh, puns) revolutionizing the Complex Prosthetics game, this is so fun to watch!
Proud of you
Thanks! I've been working on this video literally for weeks.
@@missingpartsclub I always check in and this is the step I’ve been looking forward to you making, it’s a shame you haven’t been able to collaborate with an existing prosthesis company yet but this is definitely a step towards that
I have been watching your progress and work since I lost my thumb in a traumatic amputation. Love seeing where you are going with this. I hope it causes others to maybe work on a version for a missing thumb.
Hopefully! That would be awesome! The tough thing about thumbs is, aside from how to mount the device, how do you drive it? It's a 2 axis appendage. You could always average the motion into a single axis just to get some functionality, which is what I think you'd have to do.
Of course, I believe that change is going to have to come from within the amputee community on that one. Like with my situation, it's been deemed that there isn't enough ROI for the major players to pay too much attention to your needs. You could always do like what I did and first design one for yourself, then one to help your community. Think about it and hmu if you decide to go in that direction.
Every time i see 1 of your videos it amazes me how natural and fluid your hand gestures are with your prosthetic hand. I am honestly surprised that companies like boston dynamics or other robotics companies have not approached you with out right job offers what you have pulled off with your hand is at or above their own level of technology and sophistication. You hand could be adapted to robotics so stinking easy it is not even funny
the anger phase of grief. is exactly what i would go through for a long time. just when you explained it, i put myself in those shoes and had absolute rage. I love supporting this channel, god bless you all.

Thank you for specifying "only a file". The number of time I see people using power tools for no good reason on TH-cam is mind bogling.
I'm not expecting everybody to be trained to square stock with files as I was (luxury gunsmith), but seeing people using power tools to deburr machined parts or angle grinder to cur steel rods when 10 second with a hacksaw would have suffice is just sad.
If anyone is interested in this and does not have the manufacturing experience, I might be able to help. I travel a lot with work (so I could come to you).
It's finally happening. I've watched you for years. You're going down in history man.
6:13 BEHOLD! The moment we've been waiting for! Haha. Jokes aside..this is awesome Ian. I hope this project takes off because it would be well deserved.
And them he cleans the lense and it gets worse
I'm not amputee, and I live in Russia, but I'm watching your channel for months and I wish you success in this business.
Been keeping updated for a while and the progress you are making is amazing! This is the groundwork that can ultimately help a lot of people.
crazy how its just one guy with 1.5 hands in a garage doing this by himself, you'd think there would be some major corporations or at least universities making stuff like this
@@denisl2760 I suspect being a disabled person gives him unique insight into how to best design something like this.
Boy is it going to be great seeing the next person gain function (and style!) through the mechanical prosthetic.
My grandpa lost a leg while in the army (Not at war, but service was obligatory under communist gov and they were repairing railroad tracks and shit happened), so I'm very happy many amputees will have more comfortable lives thanks to this project.
I've been watching the progress of your posts periodically, and it makes me really happy to see you get to such a point to try to share what you've put so much effort into
This man is getting us to the kind of cyberpunk world we actually want to live in
this is more steampunk! But I do agree I want to see a world with this
This man is our ripperdoc saint 🥰 In all seriousness though the work that you do is amazing, and even without this project you've already positively affected the lives of many. keep it up, man! Hope all is well if/when you read this
The fact that you managed to make these hands of yours without needing a battery pack of somekind blows my mind. Well done. And best of luck with whatever direction these projects of yours take you in the future.
good luck, you are quite an engineer and i hope this is successful for you and your potential customers
Not an amputee but I am a total nerd for mechanical things like this. Fingers crossed for you that this takes off and you're able to develop this more to meet the needs of more people!
Love this so much. I'd say any amputees that meet the criteria but are daunted by the fabrication process should match up with fans of the channel who are into the engineering/fabrication side; I know I'd personally love to assist using my experience and tools if asked; and absolutely free of charge.
These videos are true honest science and development. This is the stuff that makes humans awesome
I'm a machinist in Tacoma WA and I've been in awe of your work for years, I'd be glad to help someone in the Puget Sound put one of these together.
watching you be as expressive as you are with the hand gestures on the prosthetic hand is really inspiring
I've followed your channel for a couple of years already and have been mesmerised by the process and prototyping of your prosthetics.
The work you've done is absolutely amazing and it shows in the elegance of your prosthetic design.
I don't think I can be of any help to you, but I nonetheless wanted to show my appreciation.
I’m hoping that he will be able to conduct this without issue
Me too, I've been super apprehensive about putting this out there. But finally came to the conclusion or do it or don't, but pick a path! Now is as good of a time as any, so here we are. Putting it out there and testing the waters.
@@missingpartsclub I’m proud that you were able to arrive at this point though. It shows how far you’ve come and what you have done for your community. If there’s anyone that would be a pioneer, we’re glad it’s you!
@@missingpartsclub How do you get around FDA and prosthetic regulations? Is it because it is a kit? I'm not the FDA police, I was just wondering how that worked?
@@cheeto4493Is this even the kind of thing the FDA regulates? It doesn’t seem to be invasive or anything… and it isn’t a drug..
i love now smoothly your mechanical hand moves while you’re talking. it looks so natural
Have been watching you for years and the progress you've made and now made available for others is just amazing.
I've been following your videos a while now, hoping I'd hear something like this, and I hope for your complete success not only for your future prosperity but for all the people world wide your invention will help. Wishing you the very best of luck!
I gotta say, the fact you're out here shipping out medical protheses to folks who need them is the only bit of good to come from the soft cyberpunk hellscape we're all trapped in. God luck and good speed!
Your videos have given me a serious interest in mechanical engineering
Hello and good morning. i am an amputee, but I am incredibly amazed by the work you do and have done. I live in San Jose and would gladly donate my time, experience, printers, and machines. if you ever need someone in the Bay Area for any reason. Have a wonderful day
This project is incredibly cool. Wishing all the best to you and the participants of the trial
Awesome! So glad you can finally distribute these in some way, it's by far the most practical and intuitive hand prosthetic I've ever seen.
What an incredible, elegant, and economical piece of engineering.
As others here, I'm not an amputee, but I've been following your progress for years and it's so damn cool so see the awesome work being done.
Great stuff. I've been following your channel since 2021. I actually found you one night when I was talking to a chick on tinder. She asked me what I was doing at the time (which was playing video games - which I thought would be a lame answer) so I quickly opened TH-cam and just clicked the first recommended video which was one of yours and told her I was watching videos about an amputee making himself a mechanical hand - she thought that was pretty cool. 3 years on we're still together and have recently bought a house. Cheers for that my man!
Respect. Legendary
I remember being a kid and thinking things like “imaging in the future if they could make prosthetic limbs that synch to your nerves / mind! Woah…”
It’s amazing to watch you bring the idea to life like this! Please don’t ever stop making content! 🙂↔️🫶
Awesome! I'm just here for the interesting engineering and solutions that go into the project, but I am so happy you can do this and people get to benefit from it! Hopefully you get plenty of candidates!
Been following avidly through your early prototypes until now. Your relentless iterating and pursuit of further function has been immensely inspiring, and it's so awesome that you're finally able to begin experimenting with offering this to other amputees.
Im not an amputee but i live in Alaska. Flat rate works to us too so i hope you include any Alaskans or Hawaiians.
If it fits, I'll ship.
Best of luck with your test group.
If I was missing some hand this is exactly what Id want. Its such an incredible piece of work I hope this goes well and branches out to help more people..
first time I saw your video I was impressed, Its insane the level of detail your prosthetic has
Awesome job sir! What a great journey over the years to get to this point. Keep it going!
you're doing amazing things. this brightened my day even though i am not an amputee. keep smiling. love from Maine.
My father was an orthopedic surgon who once had a young patient with an identical injury, the kid lost four fingers on a hand in an accident. My dad asked me if I could design a robotic prosthetic because I'm an engineer, but I honestly didn't even know where to start. I think that kid would have been delighted with your invention.
Glad to see the project starting to spread its wings.
It's great to see ideas like this grow.
Very excited. Congratulations!
Can't wait for this to go worldwide!
So proud to see how far you've come. It's been so cool to see how you and this project has grown over the years.
this is very exciting to see this at this point! im not an amputee, but ive been watching this channel for years now because of the engineering. im excited for anyone whos life is improved by this!
Nice work! Glad you reached this phase and I wish you luck on getting to the next step.
What an exciting update! It is amazing that your work is going to help even more people!
This is a great idea. Keep up the great work. You’re a legend.
Your work is outstanding. Well done
mad respect for putting this out there for your fellow amputees. it's a huge project and an awesome piece of gear.
I've been designing a pinky prosthetic for someone I know , your designs give me the motivation to continue to build it even if it seems difficult to build
I've been following for what feels like a long while now. You are an inspiration. Keep going brother, shine on
I've been following you for years and it's really cool to see you have come this far!
As always Tony B and I love watching your videos . Sending you love from Virginia . Wendy
I remember since 2020, 2021 i think when you started, im so glad you are doing amazing and doing amazing for people, keep going brother you are 1 in a billion🔥
Congratulations on reaching this milestone point in development! I've been following for a few years and this is really freaking cool! I hope your project is successful!
sir i applaud (with both hands) what you do wholeheartedly! best wishes to this project and its participants!
Its always cool to see how the project has grown since the days of the ninja turtle hand, you are an inspiration, thanks for giving us updates and now for giving back and helping others
very happy that you're doing this
So awesome to see you working with other people. Even just the splaying motion is impressive amongst all the other innovations.
What a piece of engineering you got there. I really liked the mechanism
This is awesome, such a benefit on so many levels. I'm way excited to follow this adventure in giving and ultimate gadgetry. Viva creativity!
When Ian succeeds the world as a whole succeeds. Seeing this go out to other amputees is awesome!
A comment for the algorithm, because I want to continue seeing the good you do for both yourself and others out there.
It’s been so amazing to watch your channel grow! You’re doing important work for the community!
He really likes to show off that amazing functionality.
I am always happy to see new tech being made, forged through a need unmet, but also hearts with passion. The future is built upon the glint in the eyes of those in need, for truly only through carving your own way to a solution can one understand the depth of an issue... of course, a helping hand always, well, helps. I wish you all the luck in the world, Matey. o7
I look forward to the day in which our understanding of the human body is so deep and complex that we have tech that'd allow someone to loose almost their entire body, yet still make a full recovery. Someday.
Wonderful work, i hope it really takes off for you. You have a great mind and i think you could help a lot of people if you had the right team to support you. Good luck!
I've been watching your channel for a long time and I'm thoroughly impressed by both your engineering skills and personality. I am also an enginner based in Tokyo. I do have access to 3d printers and a Stepcraft CNC mill. Thankfully i do have all my fingers, but if there is any amputee here in Tokyo that needs help with this, I'd love to help. Keep up the incredible work!
Awesome! When I open it up to everywhere I'll put out an ask video for support people, heck, I might do that for this batch if it starts to look like the shop tools requirement is too much of a point of resistance on this batch. Thanks!
I would like to see different sizes in the future, If this product becomes big enough to expand on that. Other than that, this is really cool. I'm glad you're sharing this to potentially hundreds of other amputees. you're doing a good thing.
I'm close - but no cigar - in fitting your requirements! Cool to see progress!
May your life be long and lovely. You will change the world you really will
Not an amputee but I've had nerve damage causing wrist drop in my right (dominant) hand for the past three years. I didn't know there was such a thing as the anger phase. In hindsight I totally lived it. Feels... comforting (might not be the right word) that I'm not alone. Very cool work, hope to see it benefit others.
It's literally the second phase.
1.)Denial
2.) Anger
3.)Bargaining
4.) Depression
5.)Acceptance
Word needs to spread around about your amazing work that could benefit many.
You have such a cute talkative fluff ball😍
this really gets the maker side of me going, i just agghhhhhh, i wanna make something like this it looks so cool
I can't wait to see the videos of the first recipients!
Good too see everything is going well. Everytime i stop watching i just wonder around like a lost toddler around youtube looking at cool videos. Nice to come back and see the progress.
Congrats! This seems very awesome
Damn I hope and pray there's someone out there who fits the bill. This is amazing stuff.
Your Amazing Man! Doing this For Amputee's is Awesome! Nice Job!
Congratulations, man!
this is awesome beyond words
Two observations: One, most of the people commenting below are NOT amputees (BTW, neither am I), but are enjoying watching your videos anyway for the engineering you showcase. Two, I understand all your specifications, limitations, and prerequisites, but I am curious to know how many people will actually meet all of them. You're basically telling everyone they're welcome to try your prosthesis - so long as they have the same amputation as you, the same machinist skills as you, and are at the same level of recovery as you - or in other words, they functionally have to be your twin. Again, no criticism, I understand why you're saying this, I'm just wondering how many people out there will genuinely match up so perfectly... Good luck!
This is such an amazing step in the journey
If you ever make the 3d print files freely available I will definitely print and make one of these prostheses. I am not an amputee, I have all of my limbs and digits, but I just think bionic limbs like this are so interesting and cool. If I knew someone who had this amputation and they didn't have a prothesis, or if I ever meet anyone it would make me so happy to be able to lend any resources I have to making them one of these.
LBKA amputee here, this is fantastic work, man!
Awesome hope this works out and goes much further
Good luck to everyone that is considering this device!
