It’s nice to listen to a grownup talk sports.
I agree even if I don't agree with everything Mike says.
He’s a master behind the mic and I feel like he says stuff I disagree with semi regularly. But I still never miss a pod
@BKHockeyTalk same here.very few people agree on everything
He knows how to set up a narrative. Numba one
I agree. It's nice listening to someone that isn't going to just say things for shock value.
As a Mets fan I hated facing fried, thank you for taking him out of the NL.
Amen brother!!
The Yanks just doing us favors left and right now a days 😂
Mr Francesa, been listening forever it seems to your baseball talks and you were right spot on then as you are right now! Keep these podcasts coming big guy!!⚾️👍🏻
The Yankees also traded some decent assets for just one year of Soto. That's a big loss that folks are forgetting about.
KinG
I’d argue that making the World Series made that worth it…the team just collapsed and was against a much better team
@@basedyonny
But the Yankees weren't very good last year. There may have been five NL teams that were better.
Yes, You are right !
@@humanbeing2420 wasn't it soto that had a throwing error in that hustoric debacle inning⁉️
Mike Bet Rivers has toimprove your audio. You are The Greatest of All Time with sub par audio
😂😂😂
Get yo ears checked I hear him loud and clear.
Quiet Mike
I agree with hef the audio is lower than most, maybe Mike has lost a bit of his timber
It's always way too quiet on my phone. Those listening on laptops wouldn't understand the issue.
LA played baseball better than the Yankees did. They played defense, the Yankees are bad defensively. They didn't make base running errors, the Yankees make several every game. They need to get back to fundamentals, that's something they have lacked since hiring this manager.
Exactly right. I re watched all 5 games and the Dodger players Mookie, Hernandez and others ran the bases hard even when they were likely to be thrown or forced out and that matters. Also Erdman/Hernandez in center and Mookie in left tracked down fly balls much better
you can never have too much pitching..and to get another "Ace" type SP is a great luxury to have..great pivot
Miss Mike on the radio.
Today, FAN is amateur hour with some hosts being entirely unlistenable.
Ly mike. Happy holidays to you & your family, thank you for still giving your insight on sports in 2024. Reminds me of driving with my pops in the early 2000s you’re the man
Max Fried needs to stay on the mound and not the injured list for this to work.I worry about his health issues.
Glad you’re doing and feeling better Mike! 🤙
Judge and Cole have 3-4 years left to produce, any contracts on the books after that are irrelevant.
It was inevitable for Mets to take over with Cohen here
Mike, the voice of reason as usual. Good takes.
When salaries keep going up when you can get one of the best lefties in the game for 27 a year and a bunch of money coming off the books after next year it really isn’t a bad move
3 starters over 30 making 27, ,27 and 36 million for the better part of the next decade not to mention Stanton making 32 and Judge's 40- this wouldn't be a problem if Hal wasn't so scared of the top tax tier, but he is and these deals will hinder them massively. Better win one soon.
@@eyesontheinsidestoo bad none of those people could even field a ground ball. 200 million plus and not one can play defense lol
Braves fan here - Max in the regular season is fantastic, postseason…very underwhelming.
Scares me after seeing those numbers. Any idea why that is? Seem like a between the ears thing?
@@BKHockeyTalk I wish I knew, just seemed like he always came up small in October. I truly believe the Braves needed to take a page out of the Phillies playbook - stop worrying so much about games one through 162 and get your guys rest throughout the season. He, Strider were running on empty come postseason.
Them signing old players to long contracts sounds like the old Mets to me.
Soto is not old.
@John-c6d5i i dont think he means soto.... hes tslking about the mets of the late 80s 90s
@@brooklynknightss He said the Mets "signing old players".
I think hes talking about Fried
@@sclafantasy I don't see how you come to that based on what he said but whatever. Not worth harping on.
Glad you’re feeling better
Bro it's time to move on..He was here 1 year..Go build a team and forget about Soto..He's gone!!! You cant change that..
Please turn up the volume
Ngl the volume is very very low every single time
yes audio too low
I've been complaining about this same thing since Day 1 here. Nothing has been done
Special thanks to Mike for showing Cobra Parker some love on his HOF induction: we Pirate fans have very little to root for these days.
Signing Fried is not an overreaction. If they signed Soto to the deal you would have said it's too much.
Exactly.. even with Soto they were still signing Fried
Mike is sick. Gotta Drink more diet soda.
Lmao
It's time for him to wake up
The diet soda is what’s making him sick
😂
Aspartame weakness immune system - neuro toxin
Big Mike knows the Yankees like the back of his hand!
Now mike can doubt him for the next 8 years
Just like he doubts Cole.
Mike has the gift of thinking before talking. Great analyst.
Mike, you are not always right, but you are always the voice of reason...
The Fried contract is not as bad as Mike is making it out to be. Everyone says the same thing about the Sabathia contract and it worked. They said the Coke contract would be an albatross last few years and he is still an elite pitcher
Mussina too
Rocky Colavito -- such a great name; right up with there with Joe Pepitone. I love going through these memories. I also remember Dick Allen and Dave Parker. Baseball was great back then,
Feel better, Mike. ya gotta stay healthy. We need you around.
Disagree about Walker, as long as the contract is only 2-3 years it’s a good move. He’s a 30hr 100rbi guy in Yankee stadium and he fills a hole at 1B
But I really want Yankees to sign Alonso
Alonso is not a good defender though.
pete is better than walker
Mike is feeling much better
What was wrong with him?
@wmp3346 he had a bad cold. still never missed a podcast. legends never quit 💪
Lol he sounds way better…. Gotta give him props for “playing hurt”
Stop trying to mess w OT even more… its good now… if u cant stop a team from scoring a touchdown, too bad…… defense is still part of the game… getting stops is still part of the game
Make Mike Francesa the GM of the Yankees effective immediately!!!!!!
Mike I think the Mets have a strong Latino culture in the clubhouse that players find attractive
Got a little bit of the same cold, hope you're feeling better Mike!!!
Mike is the GOAT!! Looking forward to newsletter
$27 million per year for a pitcher of Fried's caliber is not an overpay. By years 5, 6 and 7 of that deal who knows where pitching salaries in baseball will be?
Thank you
If healthy its fine but he's hurt almost every year and as you age it usually gets worse.
Definitely an overpay for 30 yr old injury prone pitcher. But I guess it makes Yankee fans happy for losing Soto
@@randquadrozzi1280 He's started 28, 29 and 30 games in 3 of his last 4 seasons. The idea that he's a chronic injury concern is a misnomer.
@@jayalmo8831 Yes because crafty lefties never pitch well and adjust with age into their late 30's right? Also the Yanks aren't nearly done yet.
I just don't see Yankees being able to keep up with the Mets.. owner with endless pockets and Stearns with the smarts..it doesn't look good for them
Mike you hit Bullseye with Steve Cohen selling Soto on his investment abilities and making him a multi billionaire. I think that’s was the secret sauce in Soto picking the Mets…besides the extra 50 million
The Soto contract is huge but by relative size, it is still smaller than A-Rod's 1st big deal.
2000
A-Rod: $252M
Avg MLB team value: $233M
Avg MLB team revenue: $95M
2024
Soto: $765M
Avg MLB team value: $2.64B
Avg MLB team revenue: $393M
In 5 years it won’t even be that much money, and if soto’s still productive in 7-8 years (when he’ll be 33/34 aka Judge now) it’ll be a BARGAIN.
Freddie Freeman beat the Yankees on a broken ankle which required surgery! But the Yankees have been stuck on stupid for many years Thanks a lot Brian!
Without Soto Judge is again THE MAN and there is increasing reason to believe he can no longer carry the team offensively.
It absolutely blows my mind how college football took this long to have a playoff for the championship. When I was 12 years old I thought they should do it in the exact way they are doing it now. Is the NCAA run by idiots?
My volumes at 10 and I cant hear him half the time
In a sense, it is a no win situation now for the Yankees. If they do too much, they are overreacting. If they don't do enough, then people will say fire Brian Cashman.
THAT IS AS FAIR AS IT CAN BE . !...AND EVEN SATISFIES OLD SCHOOL,THROW BACK SCENARIO
The Fried contract is really bad: Fried has had an injury every single year he's been in the league. He has only pitched in 30 games TWICE. Forget the money, at age 30, you don't hand out 8 years to an injury prone guy. Cashman tends to give out these head scratching contracts.
An overreaction to losing out on Soto. Cashman felt he had to overpay Fried to make sure they signed him.
If Fried is worth what the Yanks gave him, Burnes should get 10 years 300 mil lol
So typical for the Yanks to destroy the market with their stupidity.
@@bundown5463 The Yanks giving Fried 8 years is stupid. The guy is already in his early 30s.
I love how the Yankees lie about having ADVANCED ANALYTICS when they just end up with the same fantasy roster I put together in MLB The Show from 10 years ago 😂😂😂😂
I like the pivot. Change the team identity. Get some solid on base contact bats around the power bats to sore you a few runs. Match that with dominant pitching. Yankees profile has been needing a change since 2017, HRs no contact, no situational hitting. Now they have the chance to get out of that and use dominant pitching to their advantage.
Fried is a great pitcher and provides the Yankees with #1 starter talent from the left side. He compliments Cole very well and has a lot of big game experience. Fried is also a Gold glover, so I'm sure he covers first.
No BS stories about tacos, or one's favorite coffee, or what they did with their kids over the weekend. Just talking sports! As arrogant as he is - I love Mike!
Stearns and cohen are light years ahead of steinbrenner and cashman and im a Yankee fan.
Still the best Big Mike
Thank you Mike, only one who always tells it how it is. Numba ☝️ LGM 🍎
People are completely missing the point about the overpay. He doesnt mean AAV. He's talking years. For his age and the elbow/arm issues he started having.
I agree on the points about the loss of Soto and potential of Dominguez . We may have the big bat sitting right in our lap . The problem with why I think Soto walked away was the history of the Hal Steinbrenner era. I don’t think he had any confidence they would sign him and then go out and get all the other pieces . With Cohen there’s is the possibility he will do that .
Francesca podcast thriving, where Michael Kay the yankee fan boy is breaking up the band. Sorry Francesca is still king.
Thinking sensibly, one man paying another man…writing all of his checks for an accumulated fee of $800 million dollars just so this man can help enhance your sports team is an extremely pathetic world we live in
I honestly always loved Cashman for bringing in has-beens. I
VERY interesting take!!! i did not think about the investing expertise of Cohen as an asset to be offered incoming players.
Yeah Mike !!! Feel better !
Yankees won by avoiding that Soto Contract and with a fantastic acquisition with the 2best lefty that was available. Still got money to get 2 players before touching $700 mil.
Fried has never pitched 200 innings in a season and the Yankees gave him that ridiculous contract
Work in progress for the Mets
Mike, Vlad Guerrero Jr. is on record as saying he will never play for the Yankees.
Just like daddy
The Yankees gave up quite a bit for Soto, for one year. One of the great failures of Cashman is his inability to draft and develop quality starting pitching, so instead they have to sign free agents on the down-side of their careers to huge contracts. If you don't develop your own pitching you are screwed. The last time the Yankees lost one of their Free agents they panicked and signed Elysbury to a terrible contract, how did that work out. Under Cashman the Yankees have prioritized hitters that hit home runs, walk, or strike-out, with absolutely zero concern about their ability to make contact consistently, to excel at the fundamental aspects of the game, to advance runners, to drive men in scoring position home with singles and doubles. For at least the past 5 years, absent the occasional home-run, the Yankees have been challenged to score. Their team batting average has been around .220, OBP around .300, with the exception of Judge, and they are perhaps the least athletic team in all of MLB. Mickey Mantel was clocked running from home to 1st base, from the left side in 3.1 seconds. Let season Stanton was clocked running to 1st on a double play grand-out in 5.3 seconds and then in 5.7 seconds. To consider that in proper perspective, envision both players starting from home at the same movement, by the time Mantel reached 1st base 9 feet from home, Stanton was just reaching the 53 foot mark in his 90 foot sprint.
Let this man Cook!!!
Can you please turn up the audio?
*MAX FRIED IS THE NYY PLAN B,C,D AND F YOU HAVE TO BE KIDDING ME* 😂
Numbers aside, I'm glad the Yanks are at least zagging towards a team powered by their rotation instead of zigging trying to replace what Soto gave them offensively.
8 years is a lot of years for Fried, but in fairness Toronto and Boston were offering him 7 years. It is what it is. Either you want these guys in free agency or you complain everything costs too much and get nobody.
Soto’s contract far worse than Fried’s. I don’t know why that’s not being talked about more.
I wouldn't discount the relatively low average yearly amount ($27 million). Also, in 5/6 years, 27 million will be what middling pitchers are making. Not that crazy a contract.
In 5-6 years, the Yanks will be lucky if Fried is a middling pitcher.
It's the years, Yanks shouldn't have gone more than 6 years.
@@NothingToPointOut24Fried is not a power pitcher, and relies more on inducing weak contact, which he excels in, so I think he’ll still be an effective pitcher in his later years. Big question here is health.
@@LarrySculptsOnly way youre getting him. They wanted to keep that AAV low as possible. Watch what Burnes gets, itll be the same years pretty much. The bidding teams set the market; yankees wanted him and had to go 7-8 years to get it done.
@@gogz1981 That should help his longevity as long as the injuries dont continue to be an issue. I'm just saying the pitcher he is now at his best is prob not something to expect 5 years from now.
As far as the overtime Mike, I think you have to play the full 10 minutes if you want to change it without a gimmick.
I'm in for any overtime rule changes that increase the chances of a tie. Ironically the current system did just that; there have been quite a few games that could have easily been ties, and a couple of years ago if San Diego played for a tie as it should have there would have been three ties overall. Mike just wants more overtime play so he can bang the over.
I agree that 8 years is way too much. But Mike left out that Boston offered 7/$190m which is the same AAV. Also the Yanks were going after Fried even if they resigned Soto. So it’s not an overreaction. Now they will go after a few B level bats instead of D level.
They certainly overpaid in terms of years but after losing Soto sweepstakes they knew they had to make a major deal. This is the next best option. Fortify that staff and see what happens.
Its only an "overreaction" if we know what other teams were offering, which we don't. Teams always need pitching and you just don't let a guy like Fried go if you can get him.
I swear I once heard Mike put down DIck Allen as a player.
Mike you got to work on your sound quality. I have to turn up the volume every time I watch.
How about, if you win the coin toss in OT, you get the ball from your own 15 yard line?
Oh My! I will not sleep tonight thinking about how much money Hal & Partners gave Max Freid.
Oh dear! Oh dear!
If the Yankees are going to be run like the Jets and the Knicks are, I’m done.
Mike’s cold is called corona24
Love ya Mike but with your OT opinion you def had Braelon Allen or were going against Smith or Tua in fantasy. The rules are FINE for the regular season. In the playoffs no matter what both teams touch the ball, unless it’s a defensive score. I guess they could make it the same for the regular season…
It's because Cashman will never pull off a major trade as he's far from Gene Michael. Hal is not George. Boone is not Torre. Give me Profar and Bellinger. But Cashman has done nothing in 20 years, but over spend with Hal's money. And even then he's not the best.
The problem Mike won't get into is that Judge and Cole's window is closing. The Yanks cannot fully rebuild like the early 90's to build a new core. The Yanks dynasty was not about stars, it was about putting a well build team together.
Mike seems to forget Guerrero hates the Yankees only Murakami is a lefty 1baseman available but next year.the only possibility is bellenger. Alonso is terrible at defense.walker is 33 but he will be there maybe 2 to 3 years there is not much to work with in the market unless they go after a firstbaseman for 1year then Murakami
I like prospect of Walker coming over to the Yankees. He’s a professional hitter and he plays good defense. But Mike is right. The Yankees need a left handed bat with some power. Otherwise it’s 2023 again.
They need Max They couldn't win w/ Soto because of suspect mound appearances'
They expect to get 3-4 good years out of Fried. They know that last few years will be a mediocre.
That's a good pitcher. We couldn't sign him because we don't wanna look greedy. Lgn
No Mike they didnt. Its like deferring money. Last couple years have no value
Whoa, Mike with the technology analogy, lol. He's probably quoting his son 😅
Mike it’s already like that for nfl playoff OT .. both teams get a shot regardless
Mike, there is absolutely only one way to play OT fairly… 🤔
I disagree with Mike,
Jack curry said yesterday they don’t have any interest in Arenado, Bregman. Walker is a good addition; the Astros would absolutely trade Tucker if they get a great package. I won’t no part of Guerrero on this team. Walker is a great defensive first base man and an 800ops.
I feel the college way is the best way for overtime
yanks overreacted with Freid just like they did when Cano signed with Seattle. Paid a random for Ellsbury who’s best days were behind him .
“He bounced around” “hired gun” he was traded twice and this is the first FA contract he has signed. Wtf are you talking about?
😂😂 they finally sign a good free agent pitcher with a proven track record of winning big games and you guys don't like it?? Mike loved the Pavano signing 😂😂 and I'm a Marlins fan so I remember. Cashman is damned if he does and damned if he doesn't. Also I think that Cashman should have been fired like 8 years ago 😂😂
8 years is a few years too long but the aav is a good deal.
