During the summer of 2016, the Signal Department of the Illinois Railway Museum installed a pair of vintage crossing gates made by Griswold. These signals represent common railroad crossing protection from the 1950s, complete with porcelain-wrapped steel signs with glass "cat eye" reflectors, glass butterfly-pattern lenses, and wooden "wishbone" gate arms with black-and-white stripes.
These signals are my favorite! Love the classic Black and White wishbone gates and Griswold Mechanical Bells!
5:40 For some reason to me it is really satisfying watching the lights slowly Fade out as the signals turn off
2:08 You can hear the red wigwag that the silver bullet in one of your other railroad crossing signal videos went by
I remember when I was a kid in virginia in the 60's, those old rail road crossing were still very common all over the place
I wish I could've been there
Gutuem is a group of 555555 6th in a

I've always been fascinated by these old style gates since I remember first seeing them during my childhood while they were getting phased out.
I'm looking forward to IRM installing the older 1930's-'40's style gates within the next year or so, they're gonna look so cool!
Love those EM "Pedestal" signals!
Those gates were used in Adventure Bay's railroad crossing, and the Mountainview road which used to be a road before, but now it is a greatest grade crossing on Mountainview Road
What country is that in?
Cool steam power & classic gates.
• Cheers from The Detroit & Mackinac Railway 🚂
I have liked wishbone gates since I was a kid and the only places you will see them now is here on TH-cam, some railroads and foreign countries
These have always been my favorite type of gate saw plenty of them here in Iowa on the Milwaukee Road and Chicago and Northwestern and a few on the Rock Island
Great shots of the signals. Thank you
4:23 why did the signals activate when a Union Pacific train wasn’t on the IRM’s trackage?
I saw a rusted up, vintage stop on red signal sign at a swap meet.
I like the white and black better than the red and white scheme.
In the background at 5:09, you might see a UP autorack, which is short.
In the UK our old fashioned level crossings are wooden gates that have to be physically opened and closed by the signaler, I have one on a high speed line near my house. 😂
1:30 Nice to see the North Shore box motor out.
my set of grisworld gate lights are glass and held in by the same fashon. I do have the earlier style with glass fresnel globes, in which are held in the same way as well
Excellent video and I wish the wood Black and White Crossing Gates would make a come back
I miss the 50s even tho I was born in 2005 i miss trains from the 50s
From the 1820s to the late 1950s considered to be the golden age of American Railroads.
Hey guys I got I little secret some of the trains are coming back in service but it's a secret so don't tell anyone
wow .... nice video!
I wonder where they rescued these signals from?
What kind of mechanical bell was that?
Beth Lohan Griswold
This is amazing! I like it
I wish they had these in Trainz A New Era Train simulator instead of the ones with a single bar gate arm.
More modern ones sound & LOOK cheap (but are probably less maintenance!)
Can you record more of the Motors on the inside?
Is that mechanical Bell a Safetran or WRRS
Captain Namco neither, it’s a Griswold
I think their called wishbone gates
What kind of mast lights are those on these signals? Are they from Griswold?
What train was that at night in the back round. Looks like a UP and two Auto racks
nice video and very clear picture Wow
At 0:40 what is that part of the gate on the railroad crossing?
Nice
So basically as they aged the cats eyes became harder to see at night or fell off crossbucks? Why discontinued and the now common metal ones used for so many yrs now?
A cat eye's reflectivity should not diminish since they are made of glass unless they get broken by vandals or get dirty. Also cat eyes cannot fall off crossbucks. At least that isn't a problem with the one I have that came from the C&NW because the glass "eyes" are sandwiched between the outer part of the crossbuck and an inner plate so there's no way they can fall out of the sign.
This is the level crossing at splauding tower
How did you get in at night?
Prob works there
@@TexasRailfan2008 oh
Beautiful and now on these day people damages it or thief it.
Why did it activate for a train not crossing those tracks?
AfroSkeleton I'm thinking they were triggered manually for the video and/or testing. In a number of the previous shots the gates lowered with no train seen or heard. A train just happened to be going by on the tracks in the background by coincidence.
tallman is correct.

1950's railroad crossing
These are cool but wig wags are the best
before coloured ink
that's the same sound as my safetran fake bell
