As a child (living in a refugee asylum center) and as a teenager (living in a racist European small town), I was in utter awe with the legendary love between Layla and Majnun and their courage to challenge/withstand the conventions of their society 2500 years ago. 🖤 Watching the songs of the movie took me to an entire different world, to a world I was more familiar with, it made me forget, for a brief moment, that I was living in a racist/fascist country. I'm fascinated with the two lovers' courage to stand up for each other, even at the expense of their own life. Their self-sacrifice! Her ability to diffuse the mob's aggression and to advocate for her mentally ill lover is so awe-inspiring. The immortal and genuine love between Layla and Majnun is also an antidote to the selfish and transactional 'love' of the people in the imperial core where most people only 'love' the other person as an extension of themselves. The two actors are so talented. Each time I watch this song I'm in tears! Also due to the music and the lyrics... Only old Bollywood could give you this kind of music/lyrics.
