Rock legends paying tribute to Hip-Hop: amazing is what it is. DJ DMD ft. Lil' Keke & Fat Pat - "25 Lighters" is being paid the tribute here, for those that don't know.
Both groups have Houston ties. Billy had this to say about it: "Yes, it's based on a rap song from the 1990's entitled '25 Lighters' by Lil' Keke and Fat Pat. It was recorded at a Digital Services Recording in Houston and we worked there as well, so we got to know those guys and that song just stayed with us for all that time. It really stayed in our head for all that time while we figured out how to deconstruct it and transform it into a guitar-based, blues-infused rocker as you hear it on La Futura. That guitar breakdown is something of a tribute to the great Lightnin' Hopkins, another of our 'heroes of the Houston ghetto.'" -- bravewords.com/news/zz-tops-billy-gibbons-yes-i-gotsta-get-paid-is-based-on-a-rap-song-from-the-1990s-called-25-lighters
Been a ZZ Top fan my whole life. Not to mention Billy’s solo stuff. Baddest ass blues rock in the world. And of all their huge hits, this is actually one of my favorite songs they’ve ever done.
This song is actually a cover of DJ DMD's 25 lighters from Houston as a salute to his Houston heritage. Zz definitely did them right and it came out fairly recently in contrast to their big hits
Word is Dusty was borrowing recording space while his was being renovated. Also at the studio was Fat Pat and KeKe. After meeting and appreciating each others craft, ZZ decided to cover the classic 25 Lighters we all know.
I have the complete collection of every Z Z Top song recorded. They take me back to 1973. I'm 62 years old and my first teen-age band loved to play this great Texas Blues-rock. And they're still at it!
Billy played a part in the show Bones for several seasons. He was just as bad ass on it as he is in his music and on stage! Always loved ZZTOP and Billy Gibbons is one of the best there has ever been! 🎶🎧😎🎶👍🤗
I loved how he would appear out of thin air, then disappear just as quick. He didn't get nearly enough face time on such a good show! With everyone blathering about "this is a cover of a rap song", your comment is gold!
You can tell this is the same dude who sang “LaGrange,” huh? This is from 2012-2013. Somewhere around there. I love it. That part about “25 lighters on my dresser” refers to the way dealers in Houston would pack the crack into Cricket lighters they had drained of fluid. Easier to avoid cops that way. Rock on, Jamel. 🤘
Dude is one of the longest surviving bands with all the original members, 50 years. Thank you for pointing out the funk sound. I never realized until you pointed it out. I have been listening to then for 40 years.
They were all 62 years old when they did this. It's a spin off of the rap song "25 Lighters" by DJ DMD. BTW, they all hit the 70 age mark and are still going strong. My brother-in-law saw them in concert last year and he said it was a GREAT time.
25 Lighters was actually a DJ DMD hop hop song from 98. It blew my mind when the hip hop world and Rock/Blues worlds collided! I remember the song from back in the day, so when I heard ZZ Top cover it. It was AWESOME!!!
They have an old song called "Just got paid today", kinda like part 1 and what you just reacted to was part 2. These guys have been around for FIFTY YEARS and have had the same 3 members too📣❗🤓
Jamal, I've never seen you have so much fun with a single band before like this. This song was from 2012, and it teases an older song several times that you would really like. "I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide". There's no video to go along with it, but the words alone are all you need.
Being from Houston, you can sometimes run into these guys. I was at a music store checking out a cheap bass for a friend of mine who wanted my opinion for a student. I’m playing my cheesiest bass line of all time on an awful sounding instrument (I’m not a bass player btw) and in walks Billy Gibbons. Just the nicest, coolest dude. I never acknowledged who he was and he didn’t bring it up. We just chatted for a minute. No ego. Jimmy Hendrix called him the best young/up and coming guitarist. He may not be Jimmy Hendrix, but he’s bad to the bone anyway. Yeah, ZZ Top is legit.
That sound is called 'Texas Funk Rock'... cuz' Jesus just Left Chicago and He's bound for New Orleans....Just Got Paid Today...Cuz they are Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers. Doubt you will find MTV videos of those three, but they rock.
You need to go back to the beginning and listen the Mexican black bird. This was my first concert ever so They have a special place on my list Appreciate all you do sir keep them coming because your reactions to new music like this for me after a hard day at work is what I need. Thanks.
saw these guys a while back in the Netherlands with my dad and damn these guys still are some of the best artist in the world. This song is in my top 3 of all songs in the world
Just got paid, , but really theres no bad zzt song..i just saw em a couple montgs ago west palm beach. Dude they were so wonderful and every song was a blast from the soundtrack of life. Your the best Jamal
Wasn't expecting that. Glad you gave your reaction to one of their new(ish) tunes. I mean I'm dying to see some more reactions to their old stuff, but this was needed. Top ain't dead yet.
It says it was released in 2012. All of ZZ tops catalog is awesome. Went to high school with some ZZ top fans that had trucks totally inspired by them. There was a 1940s Chevy pickup, ZZ top red with a chrome tailgate that had the keychain logo engraved into the chrome. This was in 83 to 85 (when we graduated) wish I had a picture of those trucks.
Michael Tabor 1 year ago ZZ Top is from Texas. In1989 DJ DMD (also from Texas) had a rap song called "25 Lighters". When ZZ Top's studio was being worked on they shared a recording house with a bunch of hip-hop artists. They got to be pretty good friends and ended up reworking the song. BTW, in Houston, dealers used to take Bic Lighters apart, remove the inside and fill them with crack. So yeah, this song is about slinging rocks.
It is hard to believe 3 men make so much music. I have been a fan since 1974. Billy the lead guitar player doesn't use a pick, he only uses a penny run over by a train. He says it makes the notes sound better. What ever he uses I hope he keeps it up.
"Just Got Paid" is another song to do, I promise it's a different song entirely. Don't forget "Tush", "Francine" and "Waitin' for the Bus / Jesus Just Left Chicago"
Best thing: you can listen to this 100 times and still get exactly the same feeling as when you heard it the first time. In fact, it gets better every time.
And these guys have been together since 1969 (yes, you read that right)...Billy Gibbons (the lead singer/guitarist) is 70 years old, and still rocking...amazing...
Billy Gibbons has a books out about his life and passions. hes a prolific car, motorcycle and guitarists. he was one of Jimi Hendrix's top influences on the guitar. now that alone means a lot!
Tube snake boogie, Tush and Pearl necklace...classic ZZ Top songs. ...and yes, just as people keep saying Jesus just left Chicago and waiting for the bus.
One song that will absolutely blow your mind is "Manic Mechanic" it's totally different and absolutely underrated! Another great slower song is "Rough Boy" from Afterburner! Loving the reactions and your take on music! ☮️ from Nebraska!
Jimi Hendrix went on record after hearing ZZ to say that Billy Gibbons was his favorite guitarist out there! Pretty high praise lmaooo! Still killing it. Was lucky enough to see them live once, so badass.
ZZ TOP!! That little 'ol band from Texas!! Used to see them in local clubs before they got signed, been kickin' ass for a long time!! Hey Jamal!!!👍👍👍👍👍
I do believe you've become a fan of that "little old band from Texas". Love to see someone who normally wouldn't listen to them thoroughly enjoy themselves!
Seeing how I was one of the many that requested this, I gotta say thanks for choosing it. Interesting fact: This song is actually a cover of '25 Lighters' By DJ DMD. While DJ DMD's version was released back in 98, when Gibbons approached him bout buying the song, DMD replied saying that he had to hear it first. Once DMD heard their version, he practically gave them the song rights free of charge.
A lot of their early videos, Legs, Sharp Dressed Man, Cheap Sunglasses, etc., were all early in MTV days when videos were a really new thing for the music industry, like early / mid 80's. This is probably less than 10 years old... It's easy to forget though, these guys are old, Tube Snake Boogy, Le Grange, etc. predated MTV by a lot, never made videos, and that's from a band that now heavily identified by their videos. There was a documentary on Netflix, pretty crazy, listening to them tell stories about touring with the Rolling Stones back when...
There are very few bands that sound like absolutely nobody else , that are completely unique. Rush, Primus, Santana to name a few, and that little O'l band from Texas....ZZ Top.
Rock legends paying tribute to Hip-Hop: amazing is what it is. DJ DMD ft. Lil' Keke & Fat Pat - "25 Lighters" is being paid the tribute here, for those that don't know.
I was looking for this comment. Cheers!

@@otherstar1 Thanks for these comments!!!
25 lighters is also a drug reference. In Houston drug dealers would gut bic lighters and put in coke. Then seal them and sell it that way.
Been a ZZ Top fan my whole life. Not to mention Billy’s solo stuff. Baddest ass blues rock in the world. And of all their huge hits, this is actually one of my favorite songs they’ve ever done.
It’s time for some old school ZZ Top... “Waitin for the bus/Jesus just left Chicago”.

@@zer0deaths862 That is a common blues chord progression. AC/DC and ZZ are both blues based rock bands.

It's from 2012; it's a cover of a DJ DMD track from a few years before that
"Waitin' for the Bus" and "Jesus Just Left Chicago"
As they segue together

Have you ever listened to “Waitin’ for the bus,” WHILE waitin’ for the bus?
I highly suggest it.
I think about this track every payday.
"Waitin' For the Bus/Jesus Just Left Chicago"!!!!!!💙💙
Deborah Cornell that’s the one he needs to do!!!

This song is actually a cover of DJ DMD's 25 lighters from Houston as a salute to his Houston heritage. Zz definitely did them right and it came out fairly recently in contrast to their big hits
Facts
Yeah, maybe more of a reinventing of the original song. ZZ's version was just as influenced by the Texas blues legend Lightnin' Hopkins.
Word is Dusty was borrowing recording space while his was being renovated. Also at the studio was Fat Pat and KeKe. After meeting and appreciating each others craft, ZZ decided to cover the classic 25 Lighters we all know.
I had the privilege of meeting Billy, one of the nicest genuine people you want to meet.
If you like old-school ZZ TOP, You gotta hear Waitin' For The Bus/Jesus Just Left Chicago, Brown Sugar, and My Head's In Mississippi.
I have the complete collection of every Z Z Top song recorded. They take me back to 1973. I'm 62 years old and my first teen-age band loved to play this great Texas Blues-rock. And they're still at it!
They made this in 2012, after they'd been together for 40 years

But I’ve been rockin’ to ZZ for 30+ years. These cats are in their 70’s and still jamming’.
Everyone here is right about the 70's stuff. It's where it's at.
Early ZZ Top is twice good any of their new stuff. Ever since they moved to LA and sold out they have been mailing it in!
