Fun fact about the actress who played Chacha: she has since passed, but she went on to be a gender woman’s studies professor at cal state Northridge and she was a doll!
Okay, the flying car thing. This may be utter bullshit, but it’s been my explanation for years. Earlier in the movie before the race, the lesbian shop teacher says a comment. “If this car was in any better shape, it would fly.” So the car got wrecked in the race and now it’s fixed at the end, therefore being in better shape.
my ted talk about the sandy makeover thing: people always say that sandy's makeover is problematic and un-feminist and the argument that she changed for him but he didn't change for her - but danny never seemed to want her to change her style or personality for him (other than wanting to make out with her) and he tells the t birds that she means a lot to him and he'd do anything for her before she shows up all "bad sandy". as a feminist who grew up with this movie i always felt it was her breaking out of her comfort zone/societal "good girl" mold and having cute bonding with the pink ladies in some *fabulous* off screen montage where they lend her clothes and show her all those moves. idk, that's just me.
The only Pink Lady she bonded with was Frenchy not to mention Frenchy liked Sandy for who she was. The others especially Rizzo were snooty towards Sandy Rizzo even said "She looks too pure to be pink." Sandy wasn't breaking out of her comfort zone when she changed her look she changed because no Danny couldn't accept her for who she is. Danny was ashamed of her when he went to the diner & saw his crew & the other Pink Ladies there. He literally ran into the diner with Sandy so they wouldn't be s po spotted. Danny didn't even have the balls to tell the other T-Birds & Pink Ladies to piss off he wants some privacy with his girl. Unlike Kenickie & Rizzo who told the T-Birds to beat it so they can knock boots.
@@catspawgardner3213 sure, not rizzo but in the "tell me about it, stud" scene marty, jan and frenchie are all behind her looking excited/rooting for her, showing her how to stomp out the cigarette etc. and pretty sure danny didn't want them to crash his date, which he knew they would, because then they subsequently did - but everyone can have their own interpretation lol
Okay i have a fun storytime about grease. In high school i played rizzo in a production and kennickey (sp.?) was played by a nice short gay boy and we had a blast but everytime we did the pregnancy scene the audience laughed. And then i had to sing my heart out in an emotional ballad. So thats nicely engrained in my skull.
There was a Vanity Fair (I think?) video with the director of Grease saying how all the extras in every scene were given storylines to act out from scene to scene, which you can really see in the final number.
Fun fact about Hopelessly Devoted: It's actually a substitution for Sandy 's original ballad, Since I Don't Have You. The movie wrote Hopelessly Devoted specifically for Olivia Newton John because she couldn't reach the high notes in the other song. I don't blame her, the high notes in that song are insane, like borderline Mariah Carey it feels like half the time. Sadly, Hopelessly Devoted became iconic thanks to this movie and left Since I Don't Have You by the wayside to be forgotten. Give it a listen, it's a beautiful song and great for an audition.
@@357rbdee I know! It's great, right? I was introduced to it during a musical theatre workshop I was in a few years ago, and thought it a big shame that it's not performed more often. I would love to sing it sometime.

"Since I Don't Have You" was added to the 1990s Broadway revival. Sandy really doesn't have a big solo number in the original play---which seems odd given she's the female lead
Wow... I always knew it was Annette, but I just thought Annette was another girl at their school -- always thought it was so weird that she was never in any scenes but I figured that actually introducing her would take away from the status of her legendary jugs.

As much as I love Stockard and the rest of the cast, everyone looks a minimum of 30 years old, and some closer to 40. Yet a younger cast wouldn't have the performing skills. I don't think it could be remade today as a film.
I have lots of thoughts on Grease. 1 - It was the first movie I was ever allowed to see by myself in a theater. 2 - I bought the Fotonovel (basically a comic using stills from the movie), so I had big chunks of dialogue memorized. I actually bought the Saturday Night Fever Fotonovel before I saw the movie, which made for a hallucinatory experience when I finally did catch it. 3 - The Fotonovel (ugh) made it clear that they were going for a "Gift of the Magi" kind of thing with Danny & Sandy. They both changed to be what they thought the other wanted, but the other didn't really want them to change. But they found out new things about themselves in the process. 3 - It was illegal to have a sleepover without listening to the soundtrack at least twelve times. 4 - In defense of Dennis C. Stewart and Annette Charles (Crater Face & Cha Cha) - they were only 27 or 28 when they filmed Grease, which is certainly not high school age but also not ready for retirement, either.
fun? fact: during the drag race scene, the actress playing Cha Cha was unknowingly suffering from an ectopic pregnancy during that shoot and was in considerable pain throughout and only discovered why when she went to hospital afterwards. Which just makes her even more impressive! (Also what a FABULOUS review it made me want to rewatch Grease for the millionth time, brilliant job as always!)
Whoever made that animated intro had it out for Stockard Channing with how they did her face in the Mirror but made Olivia Newton-John relatively normal
We had to sing "Greased Lightning" for grade 3 choir and I distinctly remember that they changed the lyrics from "the chicks will cream" to "the girls will dream" and for the longest time, I believed this kidz bop version was the real one.

As much as I'm enjoying this, and really wish I could be there with you with a drink in hand, I think I need to challenge you on the point of ONJ finding those pants at a thrift store. I've never seen any info about that, and she has always credited Costume Designer Albert Wolsky with putting the whole outfit together, except for the shoes. The red Candies were her own shoes, which she wanted to wear because she was comfortable in them, so they would be easier for her to dance. I've heard her in old interviews when asked if she took anything at the end of filming admit that she took the jacket and pants, and apologized to the Paramount wardrobe department. Obviously they were okay with that, lol. They sold at auction last year for a combined $405,000, all going to the Olivia Newton-John Cancer & Wellness Center. You are correct about her being sewn into the pants. The zipper was broken, and Albert Wolsky was afraid that if they tried to fix it they could ruin the pants, so she was sewn in in the mornings of the two day shoot, unstitched at lunch for a bathroom break, and then sewn back in. Temps were over 100 degrees, and she had to take only small sips of water so they wouldn't have to unstitch her for bathroom breaks!

After seeing you review the camp that is rocky horror and the joy that is Grease I would love to see you tackle the nostalgic Little Shop next!! Love you two!! 😘♥️ PS: Like most gays I’m sure, Rizzo has always been one of my favorite movie “villains” I think we’ve all strived to channel her energy in some aspect of our lives or character 😂
😮😮😮😮 My dad introduced me to Grease on a TBS July 4th sing-a-long special when I was 8 yrs. He was giving me as much nuance as a parent can to a child. For my 13th bday, He got me the Deluxe VHS edition w/ soundtrack on CD. I love this movie. I LOVE LOVE LOVE everything about this movie. Thank you 💜💜💜💜💜💜
If I remember correctly Grease had a product placement deal with Pepsi which the set decorator didn't know about so it was easier to blur out that poster than do reshoots.
I recently discovered that Dennis Cleveland Stewart who played Leo "Craterface" Balmudo, was THE GAY, sadly we lost him to AIDS in the 90's however that Tom Of Finland reference adds a whole new level and theory to his character and his gang, they're totally hitting the secret leather bars at night. Also, I think Rizzo has known for ages and she's totally cool with it that's why she used him to make Kenickie jealous without the giy making a move, and it also helps him stay on the DL.
I recently found out that "Grease lightning" was supposed to be Kenickie's number but John Travolta snatched it, so....we were robbed (or were we?)!! Sidenote, perfect breakdown of "fangul" Andrew :)
I just found out that Travolta used his popularity to get the solo to Grease Lightening when it was suppose to go to Conway. Since the car they were fixing up was his talk about a dick move Travolta already had two solos in the movie what a great way to take away a moment away from your cast mate.
It's Hispanic Heritage Month September 15 - October 15. You guys should Retro Review the film's La Bamba, Selena, Like Water for Chocolate. Love the channel!! 💜💜💜💜💜💜 🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹 😍😍😍😍😍😍 #MovieBitchesFan #RetoReviewFilms
Also I know I asked for this quite a few times but can we get a practical magic review? Mostly because stockard Channing looks much younger in the movies she started in the 90s plus I want to talk about everyone’s chest length hair and midnight margaritas. And the song, this kiss by faith hill because I always think of that song when I think of that movie and vice versa
Few fun facts: 1. The only reason why they made Sandy Australian is because Olivia couldn't do an American accent. 2. It was in Olivia's contract that she had to sing another solo number, so they wrote Hopelessly Devoted especially for her but the song was ready after the entire shooting script was done, so Randal Kleiser the director, decided on the spot how to film it (and obviously it shows, but I think he did the best he could). 3. In the stage version, Sandy's reprise of Look at Me I'm Sandra Dee is a full song, but since they wrote her H.D.T.Y, they've shortened it for the film (I actually love this song). 4. Also in the stage version, all the songs we hear throughout the movie in the background, are sung by the other characters on stage. (there's a great interview with Randal Kleiser on RuPaul and Michelle's podcast What's The T worth listening to) I've seen this film soooooo many times and I think Travolta in it is the hottest man alive!!! What a great episode!!!! Love you both!!! x o x o x o x
Fun fact: The Spanish version of Grease is titled "Vaselina" (vaseline). A famous Mexican teen idol group called Timbiriche covered a lot of the songs in Spanish during the 80's. The covers are so fun and unique, you should give it a listen! They even did other musical song covers like Rocky Horror!!
“ What does booga booga mean ? I don’t know but if I say you better fucking figure it out!” And of course I believe everyone needs a bestie to have super model documentary hour!!!!!!
I always specifically remember the way Kenickie looked after Danny goes to drive the vehicle like he definitely fakes the head injury so Danny could impress Sandy and win the girl back while simultaneously proving he can walk away from a fight, to impress Rizzo? Aka for pinks.? Idk 😆
The copy of Grease I had as a child was on VHS recorded from when it was on TV - the issue was the airing was mid afternoon in the UK probably on a Sunday, so a lot of lines had been cut for taste/adult themes. I also had on tape some kid friendly versions of the songs that had the innuendos all removed. When I saw a DVD version/an evening showing of Grease i can tell you I was SHOCKED AS HELL.
Some of John Travolta's choices in Grease remind me of his character in Welcome Back Kotter, '75-79. Grease came out in '78 so maybe he used a little of that. I see the SNF influence too. Loved your reactions. Holy cow, just checked the dates for Saturday Night Fever '77. Travolta had a pretty successful run for those years.
I would love to see a retro revue of the made for TV movie "The Girl Most Likely To..." written by Joan Rivers and starring Stochard Channing. Its actually a thriller made in the 70's as a Movie of the Week.
I recall back in the day, there was talk about a movie script that was to be a sequel to the original Grease film. It was rumored to star Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears as Danny's and Sandy's daughter and Justin as the bad boy roughneck. I also heard there was a story line theory about the movie Grease. John Travolta's character Danny, was supposedly in a coma after suffering an automobile accident shortly after having to say his goodbye to Sandy. While being in a coma his mind was filled with all the images and scenes we experienced throughout the movie. Plus, it explains the ending when he technically dies and we see him floating towards heaven next to the woman he had always loved.
Grease was my favorite movie for a very long time as a child. I had no idea about all the innuendo in it, I just loved the outfits and songs. But looking back at it now, oof. Its still fabulous tho. I also thought it was shot in the 50's so I was super confused to learn John Travolta wasnt crazy old
"Devoon" was a Jane Mansfield-ism. It was her characteristic way of putting a stamp on the word "divine." (See: Siouxsie and the Banshees' song "Kiss Them for Me" for another pop culture reference to this Mansfield calling card)
Grease was filmed at my High School (Venice High in Los Angeles) before I went there, of course. My locker was in a couple of shots in the film. I love seeing it whenever I watch the movie. My School looked very much the same as it did in the film when I went there, but now it has been going thru a major remodeling project over the last few years. It’s sort of sad that it won’t look the same anymore.
i had some kind of anniversary VHS of grease when i was little that i would literally watch every day. it had this like mini documentary at the beginning that was hella interesting but not when i was six and it was the hardest thing ever to rewind from the end of the movie to just the right spot without having to listen to all the grown ups talk for half an hour. also to piggy back onto how our child brains read this movie, i had never heard the phrase "i could run circles around those guys" outside of this movie and always thought danny was referencing when he ran around the car with the saran wrap. 😂
FYI.... Jamie Donnelly who played Jan in Grease actually played Trixie the Usherette/ Magenta in the 1974 L.A Roxy Theatre/club production of Rocky Horror Show. That production helped kick the Movie version of Rocky horror into production. Originally Richard O' Brien wanted Jamie Donnelly to play Magenta in the movie version of Rocky Horror but Jamie wasn't available.
They would've said in the movie that they were related. The only cousin Sandy had was Michael in Grease 2 because Frenchy told Michael "I told Sandy any cousin of yours is a cousin of mine." When Frenchy was there to greet him when he came to Rydell.
The grease soundtrack and the sound of music sound track were among the first that we purchased on iTunes when my older sister got her first iPod back in like 2004/5. Grease is a masterpiece.
I remember this being one of the handful of movies the whole family would watch honestly idk why. This movie is so sexual. The fact that was 5-6 and knew that what they were doing in that car was “fun”...wow. But it’s a classic. Also as a hairstylist i can’t quite figure out how Frenchie messed up on tinting but i digress.
I'm binge rewatching your reviews, and I just want Avaryl to know that I thought Annette was also a net growing up and would always spend some time pondering what it meant! I'm glad I'm not alone 😂
Are you kidding me with the Stage Door reference?!! “How old are you?” I never feel more seen then when Avaryl gets called out on random old references. Bless you both! 😊
Didi Conn (Frenchy in the movie) played Vi in Grease Live! and Barry Pearl (Doody) played Mr. Weaver. Also John Travolta was a replacement Doody on Broadway before his big film career! And Avaryl you could TOTALLY pull off Cha-Cha's yellow pants look! Niche but quick and easy halloween costume?!
The principal from Grease plays the wicked stepmother in Faerie Tale Theatre's episode of Cinderella. She plays it perfectly - and another fun fact, the principal's assistant from Ferris Bueller plays one of the wicked stepsisters in that episode. It's great! edit: y'all actually referenced Faerie Tale Theatre after I posted this comment lol
Andrew: I watched this with my 1st & only girlfriend Avaryl: *immediate laughter* The look Andrew gave her of, “yes get it all of your system” LOVE IT!
I think, especially as I've gotten older, that I wouldn't have loved this musical as much if at the end, Danny hadn't been trying to become more like the man he thought Sandy wanted/deserved as well. If Sandy alone had made an effort to understand his sub-culture and likes/dislikes, it could've come off very sexist - continuing the trope that only a woman caters to her man, not vice versa. I'm glad that they showed a couple who were both willing to bend a little to be together. And yes, I love Rizzo and wish we had more story development for her even beyond what we got with her and Kenicky. Also, Hopelessly Devoted To You was added into the movie for Olivia Newton-John since she signed on to do Grease if they gave her a solo song in the film. The song was added later on into the musical revival but since the director thought the song felt out of place, they moved the placement of the song to be sung after the Prom scene, which honestly story-wise just feels correct.
I definitely owned this vhs collector edition with the soundtrack and script when I wasna kid. Which I recall not being verbatim to the film as I watched it but I too played the tape an cd out ♡♡ so happy to watch this. Sidenote I feel like the Annette note was in the script notes
I'm sure a lot of you already know this. But just one quick fact about grease live. Right before the show is about to start they told Vanessa Hudgens her father had just died. And ask her if she wanted her Understudy to go on. But she decided to go through with it, after months and months of preparation for this life performance. So she can really pull in a lot of emotion during there are worse things I could do, as she's feeling a lot of emotions inside. She finished the performance and then flew back to say her goodbye to her dad .
Woohoo!!!! I knew the words to every single song....probs dating myself but not ashamed. Even won a lip sync battle at a slumber party in the 80'S for hopelessly devoted to you...oh dear rabbit hole here I come!🤩
First, Andrew looks AMAZING in that outfit! Those shorts! Trivia: At the slumber Party Marty has a song in the Play version. Also the "Look at me I'm Sandra Dee" song is later in the story in the Play. Also in the play Danny sings a different song at the drive-in. The song in the movie was a new song just for the movie. Also in the Play Sandy never goes to the dance.
Fun fact about the actress who played Chacha: she has since passed, but she went on to be a gender woman’s studies professor at cal state Northridge and she was a doll!
I didn't know that! I was a Women's Studies major at CSUN about10 years ago. It looks like she died the same year I transferred there from Pierce :(

After seeing you review the camp that is rocky horror and the joy that is Grease I would love to see you tackle the nostalgic Little Shop next!! Love you two!! 😘♥️
PS: Like most gays I’m sure, Rizzo has always been one of my favorite movie “villains” I think we’ve all strived to channel her energy in some aspect of our lives or character 😂
French and Sandy's parents know each other. Thats how they met

“Divoon” was a word Jayne Mansfield either created, or it was created for her. It was her catchword.
Maybe a combination of divine & over the moon? Interesting. Thanks for the info.
I love “Hopelessly Devoted”. But I agree that it’s too early. Cut “Oh Sandy” and have Sandy sing after the drive in or after the prom.
Few fun facts:
(there's a great interview with Randal Kleiser on RuPaul and Michelle's podcast What's The T worth listening to)
I've seen this film soooooo many times and I think Travolta in it is the hottest man alive!!!
What a great episode!!!!
Love you both!!!

Avaryl: "Obsessed with her. Absolutely fabulous. I love her! Those yellow pants. If only I could pull those off."
I think I speak for everyone when I say, we would LOVE to hear an entry from Avaryl's journals.
Oh, thank god I'm not the only one who had difficulty parsing their pronunciation of "Annette"
To “Fongoo” thanks for everything Stockard Channing !
"He looks like Lorenzo Lamas"
He actually is Lorenzo Lamas...
OMG! THE SUPERSTAR REFERENCE! That was the first DVD I ever bought. "What's Booga Booga?"
“ What does booga booga mean ? I don’t know but if I say you better fucking figure it out!” And of course I believe everyone needs a bestie to have super model documentary hour!!!!!!
Both GREASE and PORKY'S had me confused as a kid in the 80s because I genuinely thought these movies were made in the 1950s. 😆
I've just now learned grease wasn't made in the 50. I always fought so because John Travolta is so old.
Really really surprised you guys didn't quote Pandora's read of 'splunking' at 9:28
I was waiting for the clip "a lock of hair, from her CHEST!" Fave quote for me 😆
OMG, you guys are together again! The syncrasy of it all is back and I'm loving it!
I always specifically remember the way Kenickie looked after Danny goes to drive the vehicle like he definitely fakes the head injury so Danny could impress Sandy and win the girl back while simultaneously proving he can walk away from a fight, to impress Rizzo? Aka for pinks.? Idk 😆
I've loved this movie for years and have never read the scene this way. Thank you! 😄
@@wisconsieee ♡♡ thanks for validating my thoughts with a response I'm so serious. :)
@@MISFITaddict I am serious too!!🧡
The copy of Grease I had as a child was on VHS recorded from when it was on TV - the issue was the airing was mid afternoon in the UK probably on a Sunday, so a lot of lines had been cut for taste/adult themes. I also had on tape some kid friendly versions of the songs that had the innuendos all removed. When I saw a DVD version/an evening showing of Grease i can tell you I was SHOCKED AS HELL.
I thought Sandy was Cinderella because the birds help her get dressed. And the Disney film came out in the 50’s when this is set.
You know the shop teacher in Grease was Esmeralda on Bewitched, and Bernice Clifton on Designing Women.
For so long this review was only a legend. I worried we would never see it. Thank you for finally releasing it for your adoring fans.
“I think I inadvertently tucked...?”
Dead
Grease was my favorite movie for a very long time as a child. I had no idea about all the innuendo in it, I just loved the outfits and songs. But looking back at it now, oof. Its still fabulous tho. I also thought it was shot in the 50's so I was super confused to learn John Travolta wasnt crazy old
"Devoon" was a Jane Mansfield-ism. It was her characteristic way of putting a stamp on the word "divine." (See: Siouxsie and the Banshees' song "Kiss Them for Me" for another pop culture reference to this Mansfield calling card)
Don't feel bad Avaryl, I'm 21 and immediately knew the Pennsylvania 6-5000 reference! Old souls band together!!
An hour and half long review video?! ON GREASE? My week has been made
Wasn’t Frenchy, Sandy’s cousin and thats how Sandy got into the Pink Ladies?
They would've said in the movie that they were related. The only cousin Sandy had was Michael in Grease 2 because Frenchy told Michael "I told Sandy any cousin of yours is a cousin of mine." When Frenchy was there to greet him when he came to Rydell.
I think that was in the play. In the movie, it was never addressed how they know each other.
I love the casting on this movie, kid me thought thats just what teenagers looked like.
I'm binge rewatching your reviews, and I just want Avaryl to know that I thought Annette was also a net growing up and would always spend some time pondering what it meant! I'm glad I'm not alone 😂
Oh Barry Bostwick who played Brad Majors in Rocky Horror Picture Show originated the role of Danny in Grease on Broadway.
Are you kidding me with the Stage Door reference?!! “How old are you?” I never feel more seen then when Avaryl gets called out on random old references. Bless you both! 😊
59:52 "Love this. Very avant-garde" "Is that the word you'd use?" Lol Michael Kors vibes
The grandma from Superstar is one of my fave things ever 'When I say booga booga...' lol
Andrew: I watched this with my 1st & only girlfriend
Avaryl: *immediate laughter*
The look Andrew gave her of, “yes get it all of your system”
LOVE IT!
The song was added later on into the musical revival but since the director thought the song felt out of place, they moved the placement of the song to be sung after the Prom scene, which honestly story-wise just feels correct.
omg I'm so glad you guys are back together.
I definitely owned this vhs collector edition with the soundtrack and script when I wasna kid. Which I recall not being verbatim to the film as I watched it but I too played the tape an cd out ♡♡ so happy to watch this. Sidenote I feel like the Annette note was in the script notes
I grew up hating this movie because my 6th grade teacher showed it literally anytime we watched a movie... Will have to rewatch lol
In the 50’s pink shirts for young men was a very popular trend. (But not necessarily that shade of pink)
Idk if either of you have heard Billy Porter’s Beauty School Dropout but it’s the only the version that exists.
Woohoo!!!! I knew the words to every single song....probs dating myself but not ashamed. Even won a lip sync battle at a slumber party in the 80'S for hopelessly devoted to you...oh dear rabbit hole here I come!🤩
For the record my go to karaoke song is "Nothing Compares 2 U" and it always goes over pretty well so there are some sad songs that can work! ♥️
Can I also say I feel like people hate on sandy for just being a pretty and polite girl. I feel like she’s perfectly nice and likable. Maybe just me?
