    The genius of Landry really brought out the best in Walker. Vikings coaches had no clue.

    It’s hard to believe that in 2 years time, they would be 3-13 and Tom Landry would be fired. Landry loved to gamble on defense, every play was a chess game. Guys talk about Dom Capers zone blitz or Tony Dungys Tampa 2 defense, all these modern defensive coordinators are just doing a mix of things Tom Landry invented in the 50s and 60s. Super Bowls 25 Giants/Bills and SB46 Patriots/Rams were examples of Bill Belichick employing the kind of umbrella defense Landry and Tom Owen invented with the giants in the 50s where you put 7 and 8 defensive backs in play to stop the pass. The Bills/Rams never were prescient enough to run the ball in those losses. Thurman Thomas got 135 yards on only 15 carries. Tom Landry was alongside Paul Brown as the games greatest innovator. The “so called West Coast offense Bill Walsh invented. The Cowboys had a ball control short passing game long before anyone heard of Walsh. Geez, the game can be so simple at times. Herschel Walker is in my mind one of the top 10 football players whom ever lived. I’d give that guy the ball 30 times a game rushing and receiving and revolve my entire offense around him. It was 1986 when the running back position was second in importance to the quarterback. You still saw crisp blocking by offensive lineman, teams committed to the run and prided themselves on running well. The NFL today, the run barely matters anymore and all anyone wants to do is pass, the defenses have been neutered by too many rules

    Walker had unbelievable speed and strength. People should appreciate how good he was on such awful Cowboys teams piling up yards when teams knew he was going to get the ball.
    If only Danny White didn't break the wrist.

    This is Mark Moseley's last game as a Redskin. After Moseley was cut Gibbs, the Skins had a wide array of kickers including Max Zendejas and later Jess Atkinson.

      ...and was quickly picked up by Marty Schottenheimer and the Cleveland Browns to close out the '86 season and his career (Moseley's final game being the '86 AFC title game aka "The Drive").

    Dallas offensive ranking in ' 86 was fourth, but the defense was not even middle of the pack, but they played well against a pretty good (9th) Washington offense.

    The next week in Philly it was Pelleur's final 2 minutes 21 yard scramble on third down that killed the eagles, Steve got hurt though and Danny came in and threw two critical passes to Newsome that set them up for the GWFG.

    Cowboys where sharp during the 1st half of the '86 season. But injuries and aging O & D-lines kept them from repeating that success during the back half of the year,

    • @ricktheitalianrebel6687

      And white going down. The Oline was not really old, It was actually much younger than recent years. It just was not good. The DLine was old ( except for Jeffcoat ). But even with those issues, Having White for the season would have meant about 3 more wins and probably a respectable 10-6 season.

      Mainly the injury to Danny White. If he at least doesn't go down, we would've still made the playoffs.

    I LOVED, LOVED STEVE PELLEUR ...Finally, IT KILLED ME to see Tony leave in 1988. In fact in 1988 I ONLY watched Cowboys games because I did not want to see anything that might pop up him in a Broncos uniform. Tony admits today demanding a trade was the worst move he ever did. He admits now that he culd have really helped the team if he became that Preston Pearson 3rd down back for us and he is EXACTLY right.

    i often wonder if Landry should have made this his last season and focused on being GM ..though from every book i have read Bum Bright never really liked Landry and and probably wanted him gone after 81 NFC loss to the Niners...but it would have been interesting to see who would have replaced Landry BEFORE the team was sold ...apparently Landry players Dan Reeves and Mike Ditka would have LOVED to have been Landry's replacement ...but overall i dont much changes..the Cowboys just did not have the players by 87

    80's Cowboys take a lot of shit but that team was in the NFC Championship Game in '80, '81, '82, Divisional playoffs in '83, missed the playoffs in a tie-breaker with New York at 9-7 in '84, won the Division in '85 and started 6-2 in '86 before Danny White was lost for the season. They had a ton of talent and a great coach. Their own standard was what they couldn't live up to. They still kicked teams asses.

    One thing I notice is the BAD redskin special teams. This would be the last year of Mark Mosely in a skins uni. He is remembered for hitting 23 in a row in 1981-82 setting a record. FGs were still an adventure in the 1980s. Today kickers hit 80 percent of their attempts. I propose moving the crossbars inward a bit and the lower bar raised to make it more of a challenge for today’s kickers. Instead of onside kicks, I propose a one time only pass attempt from their own 20 that has to go 15 yards for a first down or the opponent gets possession at the line of scrimmage. I’d like to eliminate the 2 minute warning from each half and just give the teams an extra timeout. Then the teams can use their 8 timeouts any way they’d like to. They can use 2 in the first half and 6 in the second half if they want to. On kickoff returns, the kicking team would kickoff from his own 20. The kicker would be alone in this formation. At the opponents 40 yard line, 6 men on each side would line up against each other, the other 5 men would be no more than 10 yards on opposite sides of the 40 yard line except for the return man. Everything would be kept in the field of play and everything has to be returned. This odd formation would eliminate the kind of crazy collisions that happen on kickoff returns and We’d see longer kickoff returns

    • @joerules829
      @joerules829 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cbod14 it’s a forgone conclusion that they weren’t better than the Giants that year. But they lost a one point game in Mile High, which was always a hard place to win. Also, pretty much the same Washington team (different QB) slaughtered pretty much the same Denver team the next year in the Super Bowl. Had they managed to beat the Giants that year I think they win the rematch against Denver at a neutral site.

    • @cbod14
      @cbod14 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@joerules829 What you are speaking on is the relative strength of The NFC as a whole during that time. No doubt Washington would've pasted Denver had they gotten past NY. The AFC as a whole at that time wasn't as strong as The NFC

    • @Maggot-ml3vz
      @Maggot-ml3vz 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cbod14 it’s crazy how much stronger the NFC was than the AFC at that time. You can for sure say that Washington, Chicago, New York and San Francisco were better than any AFC at that point and time. You could also make an argument for the Rams. Until Buffalo came onto the scene in 90, the AFC had no great teams and even then, you could argue the AFC being extremely weak hurt the Bills once they got to the Super Bowl. Teams they lost to (Washington, NY and Dallas) were battle tested and the Bills weren’t prepared for a battle tested team all though they probably should have won in 1990.

    Dutton retired shortly after this game his back was destroyed and playing on one leg. One man DESTROYED the foreskins. ALSO, it goes to show SADLY....that NOT Nationally because I can tell you this for a FACT, Seven days after this game at the Cowboys Eagles game @ The Vet there were the usual THOUSANDS of my fellow Cowboys fans at the Vet to see our WIN against Buddy Ryan and his scum bag team. I had on my white Bill Bates jersey, my Mom was decked out in her blue and silver and in my end zone Cosbie caught the first Cowboys TD and Septian kicked the GWFG. I was 13 yrs old with my Mom and som loser eagles fan in his 20's kept jumping in our faces the entire game. Thnk about it, a 20 yr old antagonizing a mother and her young 5'5 son. Make NO MISTAKE, eagles fans are the worst fans that ever lived. At least I was not spit on this game as when I was 7yrs old @ 1980 Champ game. However after the field goal some BEAUTIFUL blonde woman with her girlfriend all decked out i Cowboys gear talked to me an gave me a HUGE KISS. I was STUNNED and a lot of things, my Mom was LOVING IT. Still one of the best moments of my life. Also a few days later I got a letter from Coach Landry and it is in a frame with the envelope. He sent me some stuff along with a subscription to the Cowboys newspaper. that ended with the final edition of the STAR Magazine January 2017. I WAS IN MY GLORY. Now all of those Redskins fans? Like I said Cowboys fans were still showing up on the road in the thousands and that s why WE ARE AMERICA'S TEAM.....however down in the MEtroplex it is bandwagon city. I don't know why the Skins played us down, we swept them in 1985 and going into this game we were 3-2. I really do hope i have this segment before my version of the game.
