      Nice! I’m also on a five-year plan. I’m going into #4. It’s very important to build a Homestead while you still have full-time jobs. I realize that when I turned 50. Congratulations!

    Welcome to the adventure. My wife and I started five years ago. We're in our fifth year on our land building our homestead. I retired at 60, we sold our house in NJ and bought 20 acres in Michigan, my wife's home state and where her family lives. I am building the house myself, it's agonizingly slow, but we're making progress. Our land is within the Allegan State Game Land and butts up against a wildlife reserve. We got our driveway, septic and well all installed without complications, but electrical service was a bit of a nightmare, despite the powerline running right through our land.

    • @CreatingASimplerLifeOffGrid
      @CreatingASimplerLifeOffGrid  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s definitely an adventure! Sounds like a great area where you’re at and you basically did the same as we did... a little at a time. We pretty much have decided to skip public electric for exactly that reason. It’s interrupted constantly and we are last to be fixed since it’s such a small town. Building yourself is hard work and I give you a lot of credit for that. We’ll try to do as much as we can but thus house is different so we will need a lot of outside help. Unfortunately that costs money and the life savings goes quick!

    Found your site while looking around YT for vids on upstate NY. Grew up on a farm in the southern tier area of upstate....bought a rural place in the area after military service. We have seen a small but steady influx of "pilgrims" from downstate, NJ, Philly...esp since the covid thing last year. One bit of advice..for any contemplating such a move as the site owners have done in the ADK's. If you an to do this as a retirement plan..DONT..underestimate aging/health/medical concerns. They can force changes to a rural lifestyle you were planning on...have seen this happen a number of times. With that said..you two have an interesting site..which convinced me enough to subscribe.

    The APA approved an earth sheltered house?

    • @CreatingASimplerLifeOffGrid
      @CreatingASimplerLifeOffGrid  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They actually have nothing to do with approving building permits for us. I’m editing this to be more clear... it depends on your land classification and whether or not you’re near water or a protected area. We chose this property specifically because we wouldn’t have any problems and could do what we wanted. We even did an APA jurisdictional inquiry when we first purchased the land as well.

    • @BS.-.-
      @BS.-.- 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CreatingASimplerLifeOffGrid that's surprising. I thought the APA always had jurisdiction in the adk park. Thanks for the Info

    • @CreatingASimplerLifeOffGrid
      @CreatingASimplerLifeOffGrid  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It does, for the number of structures depending upon classification or the distance from wetlands but not for the type of structure.

    Did you guys have to go with a raised bed septic system?

    • @CreatingASimplerLifeOffGrid

      Not sure what you mean by raised bed but we did have to build it up. Here’s the video th-cam.com/video/LN4-ZcDuSUs/w-d-xo.html Let me know if that’s what you mean please👍

      @@CreatingASimplerLifeOffGrid Thank you for the link. I have to say I just found your channel when I had a " video short recommended" on TH-cam a couple of hours ago. It was your video of the red generator you unpacked and ran the first time. So I didn't see the video of the septic install you posted for me to see.
      My question has been answered about the " raised bed field". I had a similar issue with my leech bed. I had 3 feet of blue clay 2 feet below grade which required me to add a layer of soil to accommodate the bed. The upside of finding the clay allowed me to dig a large pond and have it lined with the clay to hold water. I live in the Finger Lakes of NY where clay is common. I was curious as to what the soil is like in your area as I've never lived in the Adirondack region just visited over the years. You have picked a fantastic area to live. Best of luck and kindest regards. I will watch your other videos, they are very well done.

    • @CreatingASimplerLifeOffGrid
      @CreatingASimplerLifeOffGrid  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Appreciate that very much. Finger lakes is beautiful. Mother in law is from Seneca falls. We have no clay in the Adirondacks. It’s sandy and drains well but it’s not deep because there’s so much bedrock.
