Hi Pete. Those wax cylinder records you have for your Edison Record player should never be held in your hands. The oils from your skin can cause mold to form on them. When I handle mine, I always start by washing my hands in soap and water. When I remove them from the cases I stick a couple fingers inside the cylinder to pull it from the case and also place them on the player. My Edison Standard player is similar to your’s except I have a smaller horn. I also have two different reproducers, one for 2 minute cylinders and one for 4 minute cylinders, and they are not interchangeable as far as I know. I purchased mine in the early 90’s. It’s a very neat piece of history. Hope you enjoy listening to it! BTW, we love watching your channel!
Let me start by saying I an NOT an expert on Cylinder records. The mold destruction of cylinder records is a well known problem of all types of cylinder records. I am not sure of the exact composition but several different types of cylinders were produced during the cylinder era. The mold on these recordings are caused by microscopic spores in the air and on your hands. They grow on the surface of the records during storage. The later Blue Amberol cylinders are much more durable but I still handle them with great care. These records are over 100 years old and are fragile. I try to never touch the surface when handling any of the cylinder records in my collection. Hope this helps.
@@davidjeannieintexas7816 I really appreciate you taking the time to reply David. I was really after detail on what these 'wax cylinders' were actually made from, but as you say, you're uncertain about this. All the best!
every night my cat meows at me to follow her into the laundry room where her bed is. then she sits and looks at me until I throw some of those treats in her bed. She eats them and then lays down and goes right to sleep.
How has no one given Peter his own tv show yet? Dude is so naturally likable, interesting, kind, funny, handsome, charismatic. Where are the networks and streaming companies and producers?
When I was a kid I spent a lot of time walking around a store like Pete's store looking at the curiosities. The main reason I was there though was because they had a comics section where you could buy used comics and if you brought them back in good condition you'd get a few cents credit to put towards another bunch of comics.
Me too the owners would eventually get passed off at me for walking around and not buying anything and actually got banned from a few but when I grew up most of them closed down during the 2008 recession sad
About 15-20 years ago a huge cache of cylinders was found in a German library. It turned out to be recordings of regional British accents that were captured for posterity by a German officer / scientist from the First World War and made by recording captured British prisoners-of-war soldiers …..the German officer was fascinated by the huge differences in the British accents over a relatively small area A lot of it was filmed as they were speaking into the horn that then etched the speech onto the cylinders. None of it appears to be done under duress and the captured soldiers were happy to comply with reading out set-passages of song , poetry or verses. It’s become a treasure trove material for modern linguistics to see how much or how little British accents have changed over the last 100 years…..there’s a great documentary about it here on TH-cam somewhere.
Unless I’m much mistaken Pete that bunny you have is a Norah wellings bunny, early 30’s till late 40’s, they were made over here in England, still pretty scarce today.
These films were quite common after the War. They were printed on 8mm from original 16mm film that was used by war correspondents and marketed to the public. My father had several of these reels as did my uncle. They were the "DVD's of the day.
Thanks Pete & Ryan, I absolutely loved watching your classic 1940’s videos & listening to the 1906 early turntable. We’ve come along way listening to today’s music with Bluetooth speakers with such clarity. But a hundred & twenty years ago, people were blown away with Mr. Edison’s invention.
OMG I saw your cat, on the very 1st video I watched, of yours!! And I'm so in love with her, because she looks EXACTLY like the cat I had, as a child!! It brought back some precious memories! ❤🤗
Wow this is awesome… always saw phonographs in books or movies but seeing and hearing it on here just hit different, could only imagine being in front of it in person
Cool Video Pete I grew up near Thomas Edison's Laboratory which was in West Orange NJ he also lived in Lewellyn Park West Orange. I worked for His Company GE for 15 years and now currently live in Ogdensburg NJ which was a Mining town that he owned the Zinc Ore Mine known as the Sterling Hill Mine.
😮 That old phonograph & movie projector were mind blowing! So cool * I'm 60 and can appreciate how it all started ! Thanks Pete & Ryan for sharing these peices of history! Love to see pete appreciate all the old stuff! Peace 😮😮😮
Great Maiden albums. I had "Somewhere in time" on cassette. It had a very distinct plasticy smell. I think this was when the "transparent" cassettes first came out.

I just brought my 12 year old grandson to come watch your video with me to see Edison’s invention …great to share our history with our future generations ❣️ Thanks Pete 👍
Cotton candy bubblegum cylinder… I have a cupboard full of old film and three or four projectors. Sometimes I only get to watch once before they crumble and keep breaking but it’s fun then I keep big box full of slides also and projectors. I enjoyed the media in today’s episode.
It was not boring at all! The stuffed animals, the train, the Edison machine and the 1943 film footage!! All amazing! And I knew the lyrics to the song. It’s titled School Days. ❤️👍🏻😃
Very cool stuff Pete. I grew up at a friend's father's antique shop, and your place brings back some fun memories It was a kind of side of the road, dusty shop, but you could learn a lot there 😉
The train set mentions Louis Marx and Co at 200 5th Ave in NYC. That address still exists. The building was well known in the toy industry. It (and it's adjacent neighbor) were the headquarters of many famous toy and game manufacturers. Today you can find a Lego store in the lobby.
My grandma used to take me to cubs games all the time as a kid. The lights didn’t come until the late 80’s . I was at a game against the dodgers they called due to darkness it was like a 1:00 game start man that was a long day for a twelve year old boy!
i had the Galactica game way back 1982, was in the army stationed at Ft Riley KS and transferring to Augsburg Germany , took the game on the flight with to waste time while flying ,
Regarding the WW2 footage and the Victrola: I know we think we have it bad now, but imagine how uncertain life must have felt for people living during the German campaign to take over the world. And prior to the invention of the Victrola, the only time you could hear music is if someone was actually performing it front of you. Absolutely amazing windows to the past. That's a stunning phonograph. I can imagine a stylish Edwardian couple, going for a picnic somewhere, and setting this up in the shade to pay music for them.
Yeah Pete, this video was a bit different but that's what I like about your channel, always a little different, very entertaining! God Bless You and Your Family!🎉
Before VHS etc. there were numerous retail outlets selling cine projectors and films. Sometimes hotels / schools would show cine films on a pop-up screen.
i would never sell the phonograph on eBay.. something of that rarity and condition and the fact that the invention in itself was one of those leaps of advancement that changed everything and lead to so many other advancements, it certainly was a game changer so to speak.
