  • There are too many USB standards now and it can be hard to understand what are the differences between the old and new standards, especially when the USB-IF keeps changing the naming structure! It can be very hard to follow so here is a nice and easy video to keep you up to date with all the latest standards!

Does Sabrent make a dock/hub for me to connect a couple of high speed SSD portable drives that might match the M1 Mac Mini’s internal drive read/write speeds?

question - if some device has for example usb 3,1 gen 1 in it, can i use thunderbolt 4 on it? It would not work completely or just be downgraded to usb 3,1 gen 1 port speeds ?

      It will downgrade

It's the lowest common denominator. Always been that way.

Tongue in Cheek : I'm waiting for UPB, Universal Parallel Bus; 8 data cables + 4 power 250 Volts 250 Amps cables : 8 data cables to provide 256 GB/s (Giga Buad) not slow giga Bits :) Optical LASER maybe

you failed to mention that one key difference between USB4 and Thunderbolt 4 is that they are really not the same, as USB 4 is wholly backwards compatible with previous USB standards, whilst Thunderbolt 4 is only compatible with USB4.

USB 4 can be faster as Thunderbolt reserves some speed for non-data. Thunderbolt 30 mb/s data 10 reserved for non-data; USB4 40 mb/s data

I still will never understand why they changed the names of the original 3.0 (clearly I'm not alone)
There is literally no logic there.

It identify spec that USB was based on, the gen 1 and gen 2 identify speed modes, that means in 3.2 spec there changes to gen 1 or diffrent aspects that effect all speed modes even thru there compatibility, most notibly 3.2 can't use USB-A. Also note that 2x2 is dual lane gen2 mode that use extra pins in USB-C which allows to push double of data in same bandwidth, not some new speed mode, there's also 2x1

@@watercat1248 is like the premium version of USB 4 built on USB4, thunderbolt 4 has the minimum speed requirement for certification higher than usb4 but usb4 can have the same speed as thunderbolt 4 if they don't cut costs, basically thunderbolt 4 guarantees 40GBps where usb4 guarantees 20 Gbps but can go to 40Gbps as well

USB3 is the failure of the decade and USB4 is still a mess...
When USB-IF understands that we want every cable encountered on the street to be able to do the same, 40Gb / s, 240W, support for all protocols / features (LAN, DP, HDMI, etc.) and only the devices at both ends will depend on how much of this miracle they will use .
