Pocket Penetrometers are for use for cohesive soils (Clays or Silty Clay). They are not for use for granular soils (sand or rock). The tool for granular is a Housel Penetrometer. I use these everyday as a geotech. Love having clay as bearing soil as i dont have to lug a 50lb housel around with me.

What if the spot where you are pressing down happens to have a rock underneath? Wouldn't that distort the reading quite a bit? Would you have to have several spot checks to be sure?

Thanks for the video. It sheds light to the soil bearing capacity.
I need a simple opinion to design a foundation against the weight of the house building materials.

If I'm planning to build a slab on grade, can I use the penetrometer on the surface of the ground or do I have to dig down past the sod layer to undisturbed soil? The house site is currently a grassy sloped area of the property and there are wetlands down hill of the site about 200'.

I don't understand why people are taking these risks without performing geological survey first.

FYI a geotechnician in bay area charges 8-10 grands vs. 250 in the video

word-forthat amount , I could throw a foot of gravel under the entire footer to stabilize Qould spend it on compacted gravel under the footer Q-not that bad in metro DC, but NOT in insignificant cost at al.

Does your city not require a geotechnical report for a foundation permit?

That’s strange. Which town is that? Geotechnical reports are required by code I think.

You gotta spend a million dollars for pure bullshit - before you even stick a shovel in the ground. All money that could be used for materials.
