thanks for checking out this quick lighting breakdown. i think a big takeaway from this is the importance of location. and how with just some basic lighting tools (softbox, backlight, etc), you can elevate what might be a pretty basic looking video. hope it helps you in some way. let me know any specific questions below and i'll hit you back :)
Yep great question. Some of the interviews were normal q&a style. Others were scripted but then we put bullet points to help nail specific points. Was requested by the client but since the video was not one where they were speaking directly to the camera we had it off to the side in front of the interviewer so our eye line wouldn’t change if people were / were not using it. Hope that helps!
I think so. If I would have had the budget for extra crew on this one, I would have tried throwing up a bunch of negative fill behind the cameras as well as on the shadow side out of frame
Very delicious! I have always wanted to ask. What is your bcam. I also have the xh2s and need to pair it with a reliable b cam. I was hoping not to spend the full amount of the xh2s so something slightly cheaper. What's do you use??
Adding a second layer of diffusion with the 5 in 1 reflector is a really good tip! Just curious, do you know what the difference is between the Nanlite FS series vs the FC series?
Thanks! Yeah I think the FC is just their in between line they are still building out between the FS and Forzas. They have a 500w light in the FC line (none in the FS line) but then they also the have the power ballast w two power cords. Fc line also has the one knob tilt vs two on the FS. Other than those things and aesthetics, imagine they are pretty similar
@@blasepivovar Thanks for responding so quickly! I've been looking into the FS line after watching your videos and didn't know if there was a huge difference between the two line ups but they seem very similar. Now it's just weighing whether to get the FS 300 or forza 300
@@jacob.peterson Feel that. Abvisouly depends on what type of work you are doing and what you are looking for in a light but for the price, for me it's the FS Line all the way at $300. You could buy three for the price of the Forza
Beautiful light and breakdown! 1 question, in the main shot with the 2 people, you didn't mind, composition wise, to have that concrete wall going "through" their heads? Not sure if it was possible, but raising the tripod a bit more could have eliminated it?
thank you. yeah i could have done that, however by tilting the camera up, would lose the window and light fixture in the frame which i was wanting to keep
Always an extreme help!! I don't think you're a very judgmental person, however, would you consider looking over some of your audiences videos and giving a critique and pointers on how we can get better? As well as pointers on how to build a portfolio that gets us into the door with clients? I get clients few and far between. I know, I can do composition and lighting. However, it's hard to get work when you don't have a lot of that thing (niche) set as a portfolio. Anyway, sorry about the rant. Thank you for the videos!!! I love what you produce, your humble spirit and approach to filmmaking. and I really respect your opinion and thought process on how you present products to us/ your audience.
Thanks so much! I would love to provide feedback. I specifically offer that in 1:1 mentorships/consultations (linked in description) as I think that context is the most helpful for folks :)
hmmm. depends on what percent you are running them. probably pretty similar if not a little louder with it being a 500w light in a smaller body with a fan on 3 sides of it
Great looking shots. Flog2? You used the Tamron 17-70 on a professional video shoot? 🤮I sold mine for a Fuji 16-55 and never looked back. Better in every way!
Yep flog2 on both cams. Haha what didn’t you like about it in a “professional” context? Still gathering my thoughts on it but overall has been a mostly positive experience with it
@@blasepivovar i had trouble with it just stopping autofocus until I manually trigger it to refocus. It may or may not recover at that point. Also wildly abrupt exposure changes and defocusing during zoom. It's usually OK as a series of primes, but overall the 16-55 has just been better in every single department!
@_trismegistus interesting. yeah the focus change while zooming is a thing. I haven’t experienced aperture changes and the AF has been pretty rock solid. It feels pretty responsive to the AF custom settings so maybe those were giving you issue? I’m still tweaking mine depending on the scenario. Glad to hear you have found a lens that works for you 🙏🏼
Interesting. To me it looked better than having both full faces in frame (distracting) or filling the frame with one face (too intense, close, dramatic). Final edit will do some scaling on each as I always shoot a little wide to have some flex in post. Appreciate the thoughts.
@@JoATTech oh i figured you were speaking from personal experience of filming a two person interview, and therefore would know what you prefer to do in this scenario
@@blasepivovar I'm speaking from the viewer perspective. I think I've never seen 2 person interview when 1 person has been cut in two. But I'm not watching tons of interviews and usually people in the shot sits either in front of each other or at least a bit towards each other.

Great breakdown! Thanks for having me on this shoot. Great people and great space!

Honestly I've never seen a crew use a 5 in 1 reflector like that! very impressed. Totally going to use this method 🙌
glad to hear it! they are super helpful to have on hand
Love the breakdown man! Curious about the teleprompter with A-cam off to the side. Any thoughts or reasoning for this?

Really awesome lighting and colors (as always). That moire runs strong on that right shirt though...good lord.
Yeah crazy. Didn’t see any on the monitor but def noticeable in post. Good thing to note for next time for sure
Thanks for the breakdown, your process is legit!
Thank you!
The teleprompter build it very good love the idea of it being off set like an interview is there incorporating that into more projects!
glad to hear it was helpful 🤘🏽
Do you think Negative Fill would've helped a lot in this situation, especially with all that sun spilling in from every direction?

xt5. i have a whole video why i picked one up as my b cam
@@blasepivovar Yes saw that! Thanks for making. It's a hard one deciding between 3 different cams but video helped, thanks!
As always ! i love so much your content
Thanks so much
Nice colors
thank you 🙏🏽
Nice content dude thank you for your breakdown.i want know what’s is your « prompt gear » you are using for this itw? Thank you
Thanks! The teleprompter was just the tmp100 from glide gear. Running the Promptsmart Pro app on an iPad. Hope that helps!

Did you use lens diffusion?
i did not but i did do some light post diffusion with my ‘Meadow Film FX’ - VND only on both cams

Nice, my only complaint is that half of the face of chubby guy has been cut off on b-cam ... does not look good IMHO.

@@blasepivovar Maybe you're right, but it's hard to say if 2 faces were more distracting, cause all the shots I've seen where with half the face. :D
