Thanks for the update on your system. Water is clear enought to tell if it is heads or tails on a coin in the bottom. If you are looking for an inexpensive seal for the top of the tanks, find yourself an old bicycle inner tube and cut it in half. You get two seals that will cover and wrap around the lip. May have to stretch it a little, but they work great as improvised liquid seal.
Afternoon, Really like the little finishing touches you made,im going to have a go at making the same filter set up this summer (smaller scale) cant stop watching your videos really inspired by them your pond looks crystal clear don't think you will have any issues this summer :) keep up the good work and keeps the videos coming Kev
Hi Kev, Thanks for your nice comments. Good luck with your filter build and hope all goes well for you m8. Just one small tip, don't leave it too long before your build as this media does take time to settle especially the Micro if you use it. You will find you'll get great satisfaction when your done and it's running as I did. If I can help in any way you can contact me on my website diypondfilters.com (contact us page) just give me a shout and if I can help I will. Good luck with the build m8. Terry.
After watching your videos i am deffo gonna make your system for mine your pond is so clear its amazing and you have a lovely garden. Can i ask how much k1 is in the first tub? And thanks for sharing i love waching your vids i feel inspired its 3 in the morning and i wanna go and do me filter.
Hi Dennis, Thank you for you nice comments and your welcome m8. I have 50 ltr of K1 in the first tub (right hand). 50 ltr of K1 Micro in the middle tub and 50 ltr of K1 moving media in the last tub (left hand). That runs the tubs at 45% media. You can go to 60% media for larger ponds. The water flow is from left to right. Hope this helps. Terry.
Hi Terry just wanted to comment on this particular subject as I have done loads of research on filtration and stumbled on your video, wow I am so glad I found a fellow Koi hobbiest and love all your videos, I dont have the room for this set up but will certainly do a smaller version of this and then share this with you, do you plan on doing a video on a DIY skimmer? there are a fair few on youtube but I would rather go with a design you come up with if you are willing to do one? keep up the good work mate Hurry with the next video Regards Mark
Mark Dauncey Hi Mark,Thanks for your great comments. I have made a small skimmer which is on my pond that was a bit of an experiment quite a while ago now. But then I got into this filter system and have done nothing more with it. I show it in video 5. th-cam.com/video/tgBPxn8os9s/w-d-xo.html Now I have the filter about how I want it, (unless I think of something else lol) I am going to have another look at building another skimmer. The small one I have on my pond at the moment is really working well, but I do want something a bit more substantial. I will do another video of the making of it when I do and it will be on TH-cam. Thanks again. Terry.
nice one, I look forward to the Video coming out mate, I wanted to look in to getting a skimmer as I have quite a bit of blossom and leaves making its way in to my pond at the moment, I have revamped my netting so hopefully that will keep most of it out.
Do you have any additional aeration in the bucket for the k1 micro? Moreover, how come you don't need any additional aeration in the pond itself? Thanks
Hi Matthew, Thank you. Have you seen my New Pro system. It's been completely re-designed th-cam.com/video/b4T8TkRTXAo/w-d-xo.html You can find out more on my website diypondfilters.com Terry.
Hi tony, if watched all your videos and I'm going to make my own filter, I have done some scanning of the Internet and have found some amazing 50 litre bins for the job, they are about £13 with free postage off eBay! I just wanted to know what air pump you use? Or do you use 3 separate air pumps for each bin! I have managed to find a 30l/pm (1800l/ph) pump on eBay for around £50! Do you think this would be okay to use? Or will I need more to run all 3 bins off 1 pump? Thanks Ryan
Lucy Kendall Hi Ryan, Before you do anything, I am uploading a new video at the moment I think you will be interested in. It shows my new filter using 110ltr tubs. It should be ready to view about 9 o'clock. have a look and see what you think. Terry.
Hi Mack, the larger white pipework is a flood protection, and only used in case the barrel should try to overflow for any reason. This is quite an old video and this filter has been updated a few times since this video was made. You can find the latest update on this filter @ diypondfilters.com the latest version is the Pro Mk2 filter. Hope this helps mate, Terry.
Thanks terry that helps a lot. But if you dont mind could you please et me no the names of the connecors on the drums that connect the pipes to them i been wicks b and q and i cant find them and dont no what thay are called to look on line thanks terry
Hi Dennis, All the details for all the fittings are on my website diypondfilters.com under the tab FILTER PARTS. It also tells you what you need and where to get them. Also there are drawings on how to build the system on the FILTER BUILD tab. You can also contact me from there if you need to. Hope this helps m8. Terry.
Mark Dauncey Hi Mark, The air on tub 3 runs 24/7 to keep the media circulating constantly. The media is self cleaning and the idea is any dead bacteria that is attached to the media is knocked off making room for healthy live bacteria. This tub (3) requires no maintenance. Terry.
Hi Dennis, No problem, I'm here to help if I can. I got my barrels from a local farmer. You can get them on ebay. I paid £16 for the last tub I bought. Lots of farmers sell them so I would look locally first. Terry.
Just watched your new video and was still wondering what air pump is run on the other 2 tubs! I see the 3w air pump is more than enough for 1 tub! But would something like 10w be okay to run all 3 on? Also would you say 50 litre tubs would be big enough? Thanks
Lucy Kendall Hi, for cleaning the media which is tub 1 and 2 (right hand and centre) you need a pump that will run at 35 to 40 lpm. They work out at about 25w I think. That's why you don't want them running all the time. Terry.
+Adam Lane Hi Adam, I joined from my air pump to the airline on the tubs with reinforced garden hose. That will stand water pressure so your safe as this creates only a slight pressure. Terry.
hi again terry I m making your filter on my pond but carnt seem to find the fulk video on how the 3 barrels are made from start to finish orr if u can send me a link on how its made be really greatful thnx again terry
Hi, You can get the building plans for this system in the shop on my website diypondfilters.com They show you step by step how to build this filter. There is also a brand new design out now called The Pro System. Hope this helps. Terry.
Hi Will, at the time of this video I was running a Blagdon Hybrid 16000 lph. With it being a submersible, flow will drop a lot through head pressure. I would think around 8000 to 10000 lph. Terry.
Wrighty thanks for that I’m building a system myself in Australia this winter your videos have helped a lot I’m just trying to decide what diameter pipe to use for my return as it’s quite a long return roughly 6-7 metres
Hi Will, This filter has been upgraded. You can find the latest version on my website: diypondfilters.com It's now called the Pro Mk2. I would recommend a return of no less than 3" (89mm) pipework. Hope this helps. Terry.
As you can see in the video, the first 2 barrels are mechanical filters, and the one on the left is bio-filtration. The K1 and K1 Micro are used in the aquarium world. Terry.
@@Wrighty Thanks for your reply, I have seen other videos were user were claiming that despidte 2 barrels fuill of Kaldness, at the end, in the water return, too many particles were going back to the pond. I will be expecting your comments... thanks

Hi Wilson, there's no air in the pond as it's winter and the pond was only 10c. There's no air in the Micro tub as it's a static filter bed. Terry.
A well built system sir!!!

Hi Terry, is your air pump running continuously? or is the air in tank 3 just for the purpose of the video?
Mark Dauncey Hi Mark,
The air on tub 3 runs 24/7 to keep the media circulating constantly. The media is self cleaning and the idea is any dead bacteria that is attached to the media is knocked off making room for healthy live bacteria. This tub (3) requires no maintenance.

Hi,
Are you using submersible pump? And how much is your flow rate?
Joel Patrick Sarmiento Hi Joel,
Yes I use a Blagdon Hybrid 16000.submersible pond pump 15000 lph.
Terry.
How many litres per hour are you running through your filter
Hi Will, at the time of this video I was running a Blagdon Hybrid 16000 lph. With it being a submersible, flow will drop a lot through head pressure. I would think around 8000 to 10000 lph. Terry.

So you mean the K1 can works as mechanical filter...??? Do you think it would work too for a central filter of several aquariums ?
