Thanks James for the time you commit to these tutorials. They are excellent and widen participation in playing the banjo as many don’t have the time or money to benefit from your 1-1s like I did.

I have to say I really love your videos. The historical sound clips, showing how it's been played in the past with different instruments by different artists is pretty cool. I have a banjitar and I simply removed the top and bottom strings and now have a 4 string banjo, so looking forward to playing along with your videos.

Hi James. Is there a set purpose for the down up down down up pluc usage?
Is it based on the Kesh jig in particular or is it a more generalised thing? I've only ever done down up - down up repeat.

Hi Donal! Will try not to complicate things here, but jigs typically have a 6/8 time signature, meaning there are six eighth (quaver) notes per bar. The beats are grouped in two sets of *three* eighth notes *DUD DUD*, giving the characteristic lilt or swing to the jig.
The "down up down" pattern complements this time signature by providing a rhythmic emphasis on the first note of each group of three eighth notes, enhancing the natural pulse of the jig. Hope this helps? The DUD DUD I DUD DUD picking pattern is not specific to the Kesh Jig, but applies to almost all jigs.

What happened to all the older videos?

Hi Gearoid! It's a long and sad story! I set up TH-cam account whilst at University in Dublin. Six months after gradation, everything associated with my University account ceased to exist: my Google Drive, TH-cam channel, subscriptions etc. etc. I did a lot of toing and froing with TH-cam and UCD but they could do nothing for me. Was absolutely devastating. Lost over 50 videos and thousands of subscribers. Hopefully (however) the new channel will do just as good (if not better) than the old one! All the best!

Thanks was wondering what happened myself also. Got the books and got through learning the scales then when I was let back to work after covid left it. Picked it up. The banjo for the new year and was hoping to start again from the start. Really what I'm saying is if you could put up a really basic video like the kerry or britches and one on the scale exercises in your own time if it is possible it would be fantastic. No worries either way I might catch up anyway. Thnks
