Pontoon boat fly fishing on the Green river.

  • We went on our traditional trip to the Green river in Utah to fly fish from our pontoon boats. We try to go around memorial day to hit the cicada hatch. We ended up going a few weeks later than normal due to bad weather and scheduling. We had a few comical mishaps but ended up having a great time. I was worried that there wouldn't be many cicadas out due to us going later than normal but I ended up seeing more cicadas on the water than ever before. The action was slow on one of our floats, but the fish were very much in cicada mode on our last float of the trip. It's one of my very favorite tradition trips---fly fishing with big dry flies for nice browns and rainbows

    Thanks for the nice video - it's always fun to follow along. The Green is known for great surface action of small to medium sized fish and rightfully so. But you're really missing the heavy fish if you're not down deep with minnow imitations, sink tip lines, and a little patience. You may only net 5 or 6 fish in a half day . . . but they will test your fishing skill and you will discover the real jewels of the Green. Besides, you can catch all the 12-17 inch fish you want at Strawberry.

      That is true, more so with section B and C. A lot people target the bigger fish at night with mouse patterns. The daytime top eaters aren't as big but it sure is fun watching them slowly rise and sip them off the top

      @@davidstevens9280 You'd be fine. If you have Panther it will be no problem--they are very stable. I had never even been on a pontoon boat until we launched on the Green many years ago. We held up nervously at the first rapids but after going through it ---it was nothing. The Panther is actually river rated. I've seen plenty of people on the ultra cheap short boats that are not meant for rivers on the Green and they handle it just fine

      @@TroutHowlerYep it's a panther-in fact I have two. Thx for the encouragement-I really appreciate the feedback. Waders and boots ever an issue? • @TroutHowler

      @@davidstevens9280 We learned on the first trip you want to use carabiners to attach your flippers to your boots. My buddy lost a flipper within the first mile. Luckily i had a spare pair. As far as the waders go, when you have a life jacket on it seals pretty tight so water wouldn't rush into your waders if you fell in

    Cicadas and the Green, a perfect match. I have 2 FishCat Cougars, they are the 8' models... maybe a little short for the Green. Kendall, what length is your pontoon? Panthers, 10R? Great boats, just heavy.

    • @TroutHowler

    I'm about to buy a boat. My friend has the flycraft 2. I am trying to choose between an outcast 1000 or a flycraft 2. The ability of the 1000 to take on bigger water when I fish alone and the ten year warranty has me leaning that way. I'm wondering why you prefer the flycraft over the pontoon since the flycraft is not self bailing. My friend and I both have Subaru Outbacks. He throws his flycraft on the roof. I will be doing the same with either.

    • @TroutHowler
      @TroutHowler  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I have the original stealth. The new version has some improvements. Its 5 inches wider and more stable. It's also self bailing. I have fun on the pontoon boats but the Flycraft is more versatile. The one negative with the flycraft is that it's not cheap. That being said if you can afford the flycraft, i'd pick that over the outcast

      @@shawnjustice-dw6bx I doubt you'll be dissapointed with it. One plus with the flycraft is you don't have wader up to use it vs a pontoon boat. Also, I have no problem loading the flycraft by myself.
