I can’t say how much I appreciate somebody pushing back on the hate that gets thrown at this game like it’s worthless… As a SNES owner in 95 ready for some new CV, this was a godsend; and as hard as it is, it’s still a FAVORITE of mine!
I felt very similar coming off SCIV especially when I was getting MMX releases every year on the SNES….which is never a bad thing but I was stoked hearing this was a thing and when I finally had an oppertunity to try it years later I loved the variation throughout. It’s a big reason I get somewhat picky with remasters and remakes… when you can flesh out a story a bit more or retool it instead of a simple port or remaster it just makes the experience that much sweeter and I always have the option to go back and play the original
It’s always been awesome, the first game I played when I got the new advance collection was this one. The only way to play it is that or spend a 1000 dollars for the Super Nintendo cart.
@@Iohannis42 Recently played both for the first time. Had some fun with X, meanwhile 4 was an OK-ish mediocre experience. Sure you can control yourself during a jump and whip in different directions but they could put these great mechanics in a better game.
This was the most "NES" feeling after 3, feel like an intentional throwback. There's a lot of tech with the control and weapon mechanics. It's not the most polished, but in a CV1-3 mood DracX fits the bill. You can't go "Just play Rondo" because they're extremely different games.
I still feel this game should've been released on a 32 meg cartridge. We could've had a whole game that kept up to the promise of the first level. You can tell they had to stretch the memory budget as you progress through the game.
@@MegaManiac85 it would’ve never made it without pushing Symphony Of The Night back or forgoing the port of Chronicles. And at that point why not just do an enhanced port of rondo?
Usually the differences in the these and other Konami games was simply nintendo demanding their version not be the same as what was released on another consoles. That's why the genesis game bloodlines is what it is. No Belmont, and most of its enemies are variations of traditional fodder. Nintendo probably told Konami that they didn't want a straight port of rondo of blood. Thus we got Dracula x.
That makes sense, I gotta give them credit for mixing it up enough to have a radically different end product outside a specific character or skin. What did you think of Bloodlines overall?
Another killer video! Absolutely love the soundtrack. If one can separate this from SCIV, Bloodlines & Rondo, it's a fantastic game on it's own. A long time ago, a local store had a copy for $50 but I passed cus I thought that was too much; really regretting that now!
That sounds similar to my story with MegaMan 5 for the longest time I wouldn’t spend $40 on it and paid the price when the prices jumped! I agree on the ost especially the prologue theme almost gives off some ff6 vibes to me
Have you ever noticed how the underpart of throne room in SotN looks similar to the Dracula Battle of Dracula X? The pillars that Richter fought Dracula on seem to be there, but of course, no bottomless pits. I've always wondered if that area, and the one preceding it with the elevator, were meant to be a reference to Dracula X.
Akumajou Dracula XX is a game that I've never been able to hate. It may not be as polished or as deep as Rondo, and sometimes it's just not fair. But overall I feel the experience is mostly solid, Richter still feels like himself when controlling him (aside from extended landing lag, beware of this in the clock tower) and it does a lot of things with its stage design that Rondo never did. Dracula XX makes for an interesting B-side to Richter's legacy, and despite being excluded (X-cluded?) from Rondo's PSP remake/compilation known as Dracula X Chronicles, I feel the developers still took some inspiration from it. Worth noting: A feature of Dracula XX's password system is remembering your subweapon. Upon defeating the stage 3 boss Dullahan with key in hand, immediately write down the password shown. You can then retry Stage 4 with the key as many times as needed (though it will take a reset to do so). Also, the key itself holds a surprising amount of power. In both this and Rondo, the key's item crash costs zero hearts and appears to do nothing at first. But in the couple seconds it's active, Richter is enveloped in protective fire that shields him from all harm and causes damage to enemies. With good timing, it can be the KEY to survival (I had to I'm sorry)
I missed the item crash with the Key completely! That might have made things a bit easier for the home stretch! One thing I will add is Atleast both chambers for Anette and Maria are close by I was a bit worried I would have to hunt down another key and find out she was in the clock tower like rondo 😆 This was a cool twist and I still need to try the PSP remake if Rondo just looking for a good way to capture the footage
@RockinKatReviews On a semi related note. I remember finding the lack of a bad ending in Rondo strange. First time around I did not rescue Annette, since I was playing the Japanese version and don't understand Japanese, I first assumed Dracula's bellowing laugh as he dies was because Richter messed up. But no, Drac's just laughing because his adversary gave him such an amusing battle of wits, and he knows the cycle will only continue. And all that changes when you do rescue everyone is they appear in the sky before the credits. Dracula XX raises the stakes considerably with the possibility of Annette becoming a vampire herself. Richter not only bears witness to the consequences of failure, but has to be the one to put her down personally. You don't see him explicitly react, ever the stoic vampire hunter, but the ending shows how it's affected him. It sticks with you. Rondo's approach isn't necessarily bad or anything but I appreciate the twist here.
I remember playing this game back in the day and thinking "wow, what a stepback compared to Castkevania IV..." I mean the aesthetics, the 8 whip directions... I already had my PlayStation, so I kinda neglected it. Then, a few years back, someone asked me to play it on a live, and so I did. And when I got to Dracula's fight, I simply quit. I mean, Dracula shouldn't need to cheat on us, right? Bottomless pits? Really? Then, something clicked in me, and I decided to "git gud" on it, and so I did. Nowadays, this is one of my favourite games, and I always find myself playing it again and again... This game really deserves some more Love... Nice video, by the way... cheers!
I felt that way a bit too with SCIV In a lot of ways the 8 directional whipping was so good it spoiled me. But I will say that much like you did going back to it gave me a far greater sense of appreciation for it and you know what’s funny I didn’t realize until playing around with the controls is that in many scenarios crouching cancels out knockback
This is your most epic vid so far. I might one day throw down the money for this cart, i think its up to $200 or so. The skeletons of the arse-holeish variety should have their own reddit thread or something.
I originally played this first so it was the next castlegania to me and it was good. Hard but great and discovering some secrets to play other stages later on was the cherry on top for me to go back and replay it and they are both grest in their own rights. I first rented this game in blockbuster and eventually bought it from them when they were clearing out inventory for n64. Was able to get this and ninja gaiden trilogy and shinobi 3 at the time which i still have. The Dracula fight was more epic and harder here than it was in rondo. Also love the first track way more than other versions of the song. Also never understood the hate towards this game, its more castlevania and an extra adventure with richter
I’m not sure if the Dracuak X got limited distribution like final fight did where if I remember correctly had a bit of an exclusivity to certain retailers. My blockbuster phased them out pretty fast in 96 as soon as the 64 games started releasing so I didn’t get a crack at it til the early 2000s but even then I was much like u had a great time w it
Spoiler, they didn't, and the way castlevania on netflix has been going, they'll make him have a bumming session with alucard, it's all gone to edgey and gay.
The game is a true 16-bit Castlevania 1, whereas the previous Super Nintendo release was more of a reimagining, this is the first game with a couple branching paths and two people to rescue added in. If you love Castlevania 1 on nes you’ll love this game.
I enjoy this game as a callback to the Nes games, and none of my criticisms stem from comparing it to Rondo. I really think this game should have been on a 32 meg cartridge. Level 1 goes for the gusto, but once you pass the bridge on level 2, it becomes clear that consessions are being made.
Dracula X has got better textures than rondo, nice effects, but ultimately it feels very flat and lacks a hard direction, because... Rondo exists. Bloodlines is over rated in my option but that game has a clear cut design and delivery of story, Dracula x feels very muted, like porridge with alot of water added. And yes I've played both, and completed them both, and if you want to see the differences all the way through, you have to get through both, and yes Dracula X is harder, Richter is slightly muted in this version
I have a personal soft spot for that evil floating Jawa of a Necromancer in the alt. Stage 4', and the tilework is _sublime_ for this game (the underground with the stalactites/stalagmites and the clock tower interiors, in particular), but the overly pastel colours used do it no favours at all, and beyond the pixels, the stage layout and flow/cohesion just crumbles. Tack on the random design BS like the bottomless pits in Dracula's fight, the _heavily_ reduced invincibility time, and how bats are COMPLETELY UNTOUCHABLE until you wake them up and it's a hard ask to "redeem" DXX as an overall package.
@@CyberDragon10K yup. I don't mind this game, it's ok, ok I mean, mid in terms compared to solid castlevania titles. Super castlevania just slaps in soundtrack and design and gameplay, some of the mechanics is a tad crazy, but it has real direction. Heck even castlevania 64 with all the jank cameras had such a particular vision for what they wanted in a game. Castlevania x just feels like a fan game, not an insult to people that like it, fan games can be really good, in this case, it looks good and just feels like 50 percent of the content was axed out, like it's missing DLC, lol.

Reimagining or whatever, I wish they'd just done a proper straight-up port of the PC Engine game with various graphical improvements to take full advantage of the SNES' capabilities: Even better colour, proper transparency effects, more overlapping background parallax, maybe some cool use of Mode 7 in a few places, possibly some Dolby Surround Sound support, etc. What's on SNES is okay for what it is, but it really could and should have been an amazing port on SNES imo.
One of the few things I love about this game is that it has probably my favorite version of beginning in the entire series. Rondo soundtrack is overall better but Beginning in dracula x is insane.
I never played Dracula X for the SNES. Based on what I saw on TH-cam videos, the visuals look sharp, the music is solid, the levels are like most Castlevania games. For some reason, this game didn't receive the same praise as other Castlevania games. Perhaps there could have been more levels and the developers could have added more content.
