Hi. Once you've sewn the tape onto the armhole and turned it to the wrong side, try hand stitching the binding to the fabric to get a neater finish and the hand stitching will move with the stretch. The length of the bias tape is determined by the armhole size plus 2.5cm's.
The bias binding can be of different widths (it's all about personal choice and your sewing project) but the length of the binding will be the measurement of the armhole. Hope that answers your question.
I know this video is a few years old but it was the first one that came up when I was searching for a tutorial on the best way to finish an armhole. Thank you for the detailed explanation! Very helpful!
Cut on the bias means cut on the stretchy part of the fabric, usually on the diagonal, around 45 degrees. I'll arrange to film a tutorial adding bias binding to a V neck shortly. Thanks.
I have to finish off a neckline using this method, and your's is the first video I've found that shows exactly how to do it with bias binding. Thank you so much.
Thank you for being so detailed with your instructions and for the very clear and close up filming. Now I feel much more confident tackling my project!
Thank you so much for this video. I have a hard time understanding written sewing instructions, and watching your skillful demonstration has been so helpful.
thank you for taking the confusion out of bias binding. Sometimes I think I've got it, then I see a different way of doing it and I get all confused again. I now feel confident to try again. Thank you.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I love your videos. As a novice sewer I need all the help I can get and I find your videos very well explained. Keep up the good work it really is appreciated!
Thank you for this video. I was using tri-fold bias binding, but couldn't figure out how to use bi-fold bias. Didn't even think about attaching the binding then folding the fabric over, pressing down, then sealing the other side of the binding. Thank you!!
Thank you. Being a beginner to dressmaking, I was having a little trouble understanding the written instructions. Watched your video and now it is clear!
Great tutorial. I bought a thrifted sleeveless top that was tight in the armholes. I got so far cutting and shaping then panicked about the binding! Sorted and it looks great.
Thank you for this video! I wanted to alter a top I got online- the torso was fine but the sleeves were so tight!- and your video was by far the most concise and easy to understand. Thank you for making my top look fantastic!
A perfect demonstration. I could see every step so clearly and it all makes sense. Thank you for making this video to share. It was hard to find a good demonstration of this - yours is just the ticket. :-)
Thanks for making your videos to help with our sewing. I do much better by watching than reading. Again thank you sooo much for sharing you knowledge with us!
That was actual magic! Thank you! I'm working on my first pattern and had NO idea what the directions were asking of me. This video is much appreciated!
Amazingly helpful thanks. Easy to understand because you only tell what you need to and don't waffle on! I've subscribed and will look you up for the next thing I need to know. Thanks again :-)
Thank you for showing me what to do. I made one dress and the armholes looked terrible so decided to try and find some help, your tutorial is great, can't wait to finish the dress!
Thank you so much for all of your bias binding videos! I didn't have a clue how to sew with bias tape and you have really helped my sewing life! Brilliant.
Great video - working on a pattern and using bias binding for the first time. I watched the designers video three times as well as many more, yours was the first one that I actually understood and the outcome looks great! Thank you for saving my nieces Christmas dress ❤️
Are still making videos??? My mother passed away in May and sewing was her absolute passion. I regret not learning more, as I suddenly now want to sew. Watching this video reminded me of how she did this. Thank you so much.xx
Hello friends! You have no idea how much I help watch your videos, but you know I do not speak English and of course, sometimes I have no doubt. That bias that normally put the measure as wide armhole?. I appreciate your response.
....and now thank you for your advice on the double fold hem....worked out great! Next: THE ZIPPER !!!!! The zipper I applied wouldn't cover (the fabric) all the way..don't know why...but I don't feel like taking in apart this time. It's great to be able to see you actually perform the work!
very well presented, no waffle (like some fools who blather on about totally inconsequential rubbish) articulate and concise, very informative, clear, well photographed - FIRST CLASS!!! (from Manchester I assume??)
Great thanks. I might hand stitch the second row of stitching because I don't want a top stitching line showing on the particular shell top I am making. Jo
Very helpful tutorial. Would understitching the bias binding, e.g., as is done for facings, before the last step help everything to lay flat and avoid any chance of the binding showing on the right side of the garment? Hope I've worded this to make sense. Many thanks.
Thank you for this video, it's just what I needed! If you have time to answer, my pattern asks me to cut an armhole facing from my fabric and then press it after folding it along a roll line. Then it says, "Pin facing to armhole edge. Stich. Trim. UNDERSTITCH facing." I didn't notice you trimming anything, so I'm just wondering how much they expect me to trim and what the purpose is for this trimming. Perhaps I could skip the trimming? The rest of it I get, thanks to your videos!
Very useful..Im loving ur videos..Thank you.I will be sewing this way tomorrow. Can I use the same fabric same my top for the bias binding. Like chiffon or jersey?
As always, your video was very helpful and happy you show close up details which I need. Thank you for sharing. I want to make some sleeveless tops from short sleeve tops make from knit fabric as well as adjusting the neckline. Do you have any suggestions or videos for this?
Thank you, you are a very good teacher. I just wanted to know how wide is your bias binding? and also when making the bias binding using the card how wide it the card? Thank you for you help
Great video! Thank you for explaining so clearly! I removed the sleeves from my wedding dress (a tulle appliqued material). A want to re-bind just the bottom part of the armhole, as the top half is appliqued and won't require binding. How should I sew the beginning and end of the binding on? Miter the angles or just fold a straight end?
Except on a hem, I've never seen binding applied like this, invisible. This solves my problem of not finding a binding that coordinates with a fabric that wouldn't work for self-binding. Isn't there a way to do it before you close the armhole? Would love to see your version of that!
Thank you so much for your kind words. Always a joy to know my video's are helping fellow fashion sewers.

You are simply amaxing..You are so kind to share all your talents with us. GOD Bless your kind soul.
My pleasure. Happy to help.
The trimming they ask is to simply remove bulk from the seam. I'd be looking to trim away about half of the seam. Hope that helps.
Thank You so much for posting these videos! I can't afford fashion school, so you are very helpful!
A perfect demonstration. I could see every step so clearly and it all makes sense. Thank you for making this video to share. It was hard to find a good demonstration of this - yours is just the ticket. :-)

So helpful! Took the confusion out of doing this
Awesome! Thank you. This video is exactly what I needed to finish my garment.
Thank you for taking the time to comment.
Bias binding will always come in different widths. It really does all depend on the effect you want to achieve and your sewing project.
Great video thanks, I'd been trying to figure this out with the instructions that came with the pattern, now I know exactly what to do ;)
Happy to help. Thanks for your comment.
The process would be the same for the neckline and the widths come in varying sizes so it all depends on your sewing project and what would suit.
Thank you. My pleasure.
This method was smashing!!!
Thank you Kimberly for the kind compliment.
Thank you. Happy to help.

Thanks so much for the suggestions. They are on the list.
Thank you, always happy to help.
The width will all depend on your project. Try doing a tester sample first to get things just right.

Thank you so much and yes you can, as long as it's cut on the bias.
Very helpful. Do you have a video on normal facing?

Some chiffon fabrics won't hold a crease so you may have to use a different fabric.
Thanks.
oh my god! tried so far. thank you. God bless you
Thanks Joy.

Worked perfectly. .. thank u. X
That may be because the bias binding may not be cut on the true bias or it may have stretched too much as it was sewn.
thanks, it's so helpful.
My pleasure
Very helpful thank you
No problem queen! Glad I could help.
Except on a hem, I've never seen binding applied like this, invisible. This solves my problem of not finding a binding that coordinates with a fabric that wouldn't work for self-binding. Isn't there a way to do it before you close the armhole? Would love to see your version of that!
It's possible but can be a little fiddly when it comes to closing the binding.
Personally, I'd mitre the ends as it gives a far neater and professional look.
No problem.
