I just want to spread some facts soo. commenting again and again that..... Basically the reason behind why Indians donot hug is they knew about Aura energy thing indirectly or directly .. everybody have this and when we touch or be intimate to others our energy get's interfered or exposed to others.. we do namastey is actually a way to protect one's privacy and not to get exposed to other emotions or energy so on.. it is a scientific thing .. people who are spiritual and do know to sense their surroundings can feel it.. since India is a land of seekers and enlightenment rather than follower and worshipers from the beginning.. but due to some ignorant and western culture manipulated people lost that reasoning hence copy other cultures as some trend thing but that's simply because they have no proper roots of being spiritual and observance.. ! I knew this since iam myself a seeker rather being atheist or theist.. we even avoid black cloths mostly since it is a color sucking or absorbing other's emotions thoughts of surrounding.. so it is best when wear at parks hilly areas forest absorbs the nature of surroundings... for more information one can watch Sadhguru videos too.. so don't think that doing hugging is something being trendy and blah blah rather it's one's nature of observation and perception level .. even Tesla said "everything is sound energy and frequency"! So is actual Indian culture rather than manipulated fellows ...thats why they say never hook with more than 1 person since the body has memory and too many people involvement can confuse the mind and that's how some westerners go to depression taking medics due to multiple hook ups ... no offense

When to comes to India, there is no 'one truth'. It's one of the most diverse countries on the planet with the second largest population. I grew up having sleepovers with female and male family friends. Hugging is considered super normal in my family and I'm sure that applies to alot of other families and communities as well. So, I think next time you meet an Indian person, you don't have to hold back from hugging them, but do ask them if they're okay with it once :)

I think there is a difference between friends and strangers, like shivani meet him for the first time, on first meeting I don't think greeting with hug is culture from anywhere in India, friends do hug, that's common.

See, I do get that Indian culture is diverse and all. So, what might be ok for some may not be the same with others. The comment section is filled with mixed opinions which I totally respect. As an Indian, I'll speak for the majority of the people. We believe in respecting each other's "personal space" meaning we don't just hug any random person we're meeting for the first time. It takes times to get to know that person to even call as "someone you know" in order to be comfortable. Also, it kinda depends if the friend is male or female. When we hug people of the opposite gender it's usually sideways depending on how close you are to that person. Certainly some parts of India are still culturally different so it's always best to ask the person before you hug

I m a girl and i do believe we should not follow anything blindlessly just to become cool unless u r comfortable with it. I, personally, am not comfortable with it, so i don't hug just anyone. Its not about being conservative. Its just not a thing in our culture like many other asian cultures. I don't generally hug whether it's a boy or a girl or even my parents. One more thing i want to add, I don't think i ever said even 'I love u' to my parents but i do love my parents.
