  • The classic multitool, the Leatherman PST (Pocket Survival Tool), is perhaps one of the best things ever made other than the iPhone X. This review compares it to the classic Leatherman Wave, the Supertool, and the Victorinox Super Tinker. I discuss features show you how to use pliers, and carry on about some damn thing or another for near 9 minutes. So enjoy! Here are some Leatherman resources:

    The original leathermans are the best by a long shot for me. I had a PST that I lost and I miss it every day, it was light, strong and a lot more rust resistant than the newer ones I have. I was lucky enough to get a practically brand new super tool on ebay and I absolutely love it! I like the swiss tool and have used one for the past 16 years without fault, but the classic leatherman just wins me over on its solid build. thanks for the upload!

    I actually did break my pliers clean off on the PST while trying to unscrew a spark plug on my snowmobile far from civilization. I believe that my early production PST even said "Lifetime Warranty" on it. I sent it in to Leatherman and they sent me a newer model in return without question (FUSE I think).

      I mostly have some cheapo Chinese flashlights (plus one Olight and Nitecore), as for knives its a similar situation excluding one Fiskars knife that looks like a Mora. Do you have the Gerber Shard, I use mine daily as its the only thing that is always on me.

    I'm glad you finally did a review on this one. I've got the same model but maybe a little older. I stopped carrying it after I got the Blast, for pretty much the same reasons you got the Wave. Still a neat little tool that I keep for sentimental value, since it is probably the reason why I got hooked onto multi-tools years ago. Fun to see what yours looks like after 15+ years of use/abuse. Thank you!

      They hold up pretty well- even through drops and scrapes. I use it when I want something smaller on my belt- and for some reason I've been carrying it a bit more lately.

    Good video! Mine is an 0100...as per your comments, I also upgraded to a Wave for the same reasons you indicated...I saw your comment concerning your PST going to your daughter...you might consider cleaning & refurbishing your sheath....it is good leather & will probably last another 15 years or more & will look better than new as it will have acquired "character"...😊

    I work for a food pantry, and we run a nice thrift shop to support ourselves. I wanted to come here to tell you that in a pile of junk donated I found a mint/unused first generation leatherman with its leather case. It probably would have gotten thrown out cause we cant keep everything and the old ladies in the back are less than knife bros. Anyhow, I'd never handled the original one before and I have to say he hit it out of the park first try. Its perfectly medium in size and concise. I really couldn't need it to be much more.

  • @matthewsbernier

    I recently found one of these mint at a flea market, and gave away my modern Leatherman. Why? Because I'm in the vast minority in that my top tools, aside from the pliers, are the file, the awl, the can opener, and the phillips. And they're crucially better on this tool than many modern tools, and in such a slim package.
    The fine side of the file is an actual, honest-to-God properly heat treated American made single cut bastard file. It can put a shaving edge on an axe, remove the burr from a chainsaw bar, or cut the depth gagues on a chain. No modern multitool file I've used from any brand, including leatherman, has a usable file for metal work. I did once use it as a hacksaw to cut fence wire. Didn't even dull it.
    The awl on this model is a less finished version of the original design, and I apply myself the concave grind they stopped applying. This modification makes it a crazy beast at drilling that people have to see to believe.
    The can opener is a really great design, and I use it all the time. Would never have a multitool without one. It's amazing how many people have no idea how to use one.
    The phillips head is textured, and rarely slips. It too is well heat-treated, and shows no rounding or twisting.
    It's not for everyone, but no one makes a tool these days that can do everything for me that this little tool can.

    Good review. Brought back memories. I had one these for years. I lost it. It was a very good tool. I think the Wave is better. In the same line I have the Blast and that is a great tool. It is lighter than the Wave with the real screwdrivers instead of the funky tip adaptor tool. I am always weary I am going to break the tip holder on the Wave when I remove a real tight screw.

    • @AdvancedKnifeBro
      @AdvancedKnifeBro  6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Dug mine out tonight after learning of the date code. Mine is stamped 0994, which is weird as I recall buying it in 91 or 92 aboard ship. I did that fine Navy cord work for a quick pull on the lanyard to remove it from the leather pouch. I would have done that aboard ship, not on shore duty where I didn't have access to Navy cord, the same cord on my old coffee cups. Weird.

    I've always liked hearing about people's humble knife carry beginnings before they go past the point of no return and binge collect every spyderco, bench made, and cold steel that their bank account will possibly allow. I can relate somewhat. My first EDC knife was a CRKT m16. At the time I thought it looked cool and different. It wasn't aged well. My first good EDC however was the skeletool by letherman. Save for pliers that broke and I sent back to letherman twice has been a very good and reliable tool for about eight or so years. I now carry the spyderco pm2 or leatherman charge tti but I never forget my humble origins. The *light duty pliers only* skeletool. 🔧

    EDC the PST. Every single day for over 25 years. Rarely a day its not used in some way. I have integrated a pocket clip for it. Clip from a flashlight no less. SK98 for those in the know. And it did need modding to work and used in place of the lanyard loop. Works well and saves the Jeans from holes in back pocket carry as I did most of the years. I'm just not a belt Holster kinda guy. I can't go a day without it so I have a couple spares on hand to use until the main one finds it way home. Cool unexpected review.

      And all this time I never knew they were dated, thanks for that. I have lost a couple over the years so I do not have my original. May be on my 4th plus the couple spares. Oldest one I have is '94 all have the heavy wire notched cutter. That was a huge improvement. I have damaged original cutters and the pliers gets real hard to open. Called Leatherman some time ago, within the 25yr warranty, for a repair. Was told they did not have the parts to do it anymore. I needed the smallest flat screwdriver of course.Spares were from ebay after TSA was confiscating hard. There were many in good condition about $15

    I got this multi tool for my 11th birthday (I’ve been in scouts since I was 6, and this wasn’t my first knife so I was trusted with it)
    So what did I do with all of that trust on me. I opened it to look at the knife, and it cut me. I’ve had it ever since for 8 years, and it holds up pretty well for me at least.
    I do have 1 thing different. Instead of an awe I have scissors which are my favorite thing about the knife, and work as if their spring assisted even though their not.

  • @MichaelLaing71
    @MichaelLaing71 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Personally I prefer the leatherman PST 2 with the scissors (which are much nicer than the wave and charge scissors). The main reason I bought the charge is because it is more comfortable than the PST and you get the locking mechanism.
    Though living in the UK, buying a lot of the Leatherman multitools isn't practical now days with the locking mechanism. They are not illegal to own but you need a good reason for carrying anything with a locking knife. As a photographer/cameraman I can get away with carrying one when working but if I was on a lunch break, I wouldn't be able to carry it around.
    This is of course the big advantage of the PST, which in theory is no problem to carry, though again I don't now days because of the issues with knives currently in the UK.

    Got a Surge (very similar to the wave tool wise) and a juice XE6 myself. Both get used a lot, it really depends on the outfit of the day or if I expect to need the bit driver + bit set that day.
    Overall I'm quite happy about both of them, not the best tool for the job but its the one I have when outside the house. Its most important use for me so far has probably been to get my bicycle going again in the middle of nowhere once, walking that distance would've sucked in that weather.
    I've used the diamond file on both of them many a time for fingernails as well, mostly when being bored after missing a bus or train and having to waste some time until the next one.

    • @michaelkulman7095
      @michaelkulman7095 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The juice is underappreciated and pretty pocketable with a decent tool load out depending on model.
      In an era when they didn't have pocket clips it really filled the pocketable niche.
      Yes there was a Sideclip model but it didn't last long in the lineup.
      There was a way to put a clip on the Kick but few did...
      The original and Juice really fill a role for many as the tool you have with you, not left at home.

    I lost my original PST and was so annoyed because the PST is pretty much the only UK legal leatherman unless you want to carry a juice. Ebay wont ship blades to the UK from the states so I was really struggling to get hold of another one until I found a practically new one from ebay france :) ive really missed my PST and its getting edc'd forever now!

      +jooky5 the edge of the handles can be a little edgy... not sharp though. Pliers like the wave have more rounded exterior grips that are a bit more comfortable.

    Thanks for the review, I especially liked the size comparison next to the 91mm SAK and the Wave. Now I know how big it is. I'd given up on finding a good UK legal carry Leatherman, here we can't carry locking blades, even if they're half an inch, and also the the prices are sky high. Plus I've heard a lot about how newer LM are prone to rust and not as well made as the earlier models. But I've found a second hand but unused PST for a good price, so I might well get it to have a good legal carry multitool which is also a piece of history. Thanks again.

    • @thepenultimateninja5797
      @thepenultimateninja5797 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm afraid this isn't actually legal as a general EDC in the UK. The blade doesn't "lock" per se, but the closed handle does prevent it folding during use, so it is categorized as a locking blade.

      @@simonh6371 Yes, it's definitely a grey area, though the consequences of getting it wrong are too severe to risk in my opinion.
      The original text said "capable of folding", but then there was a case where the judge set a precedent that it must be capable of folding during use.
      It would be tough to argue that the leatherman blade can fold during use. It can move, but not enough to fold up on your fingers if you used it to stab someone.
      I'd like to think that common sense would prevail, but I do not feel confident that that would happen.

      @@thepenultimateninja5797 Like you said common sense should prevail and in fact the police have a certain amount of discretionary powers so it would depend on the context I suppose i.e. if you already came to their attention for some negative reason then you may well be prosecuted but if you are going about your daily business you are unlikely to get searched so it's not really a problem.

    I have the PST from circa 1995, used the warranty twice - they replaced the bent and snapped small screwdriver and the entire plier head (wire cutters were badly dented). I switched to Wave as well, but I wish LM had something as sleek and compact as the original PST. All current models are kinda fat or clunky.

    Why is the awl so valuable? As a cyclist you can use the awl to remove small and large glass splinters from the tires perfectly, so you don't have a flat tire and save a lot of money! Especially if you have a non-blade tire from Schwalbe (German company), the awl is worth GOLD!
    Whether Leatherman or Victorinox, a knife without an awl is useless.

    I feel this vid needs another comment, so here I go. Why don't you talk about the Rebar/Micra combo wich is the best tool system there is in the world? The Rebar being a PST with locking tools or a smaller Supertool 300 and the Micra brings the scissors, tweezers and smaller tools a swiss army knife would provide for a fraction of the weight. Sure could be a clever vid, I'd watch it...

  • @michaelkulman7095
    @michaelkulman7095 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Based on weight and tool load out the original tool still stacks up well.
    A tool you leave at home does you no good and so for a lot of people
    this still has advantages over the heavier, bigger is better tools.
    Now you could say the Skeletool or something else is slimmer and lighter but it has less tools.
    I'm not sure they have a better weight to tool ratio model than this, even today,
    maybe they do but it would be a newer one like the Bond maybe?
    It's also the original.

    For the fish...It doesn't float, ( but a good magnet may rescue it).The scales can be roughly extended by opening the awl / leather punch and small screwdriver. At this point they make for a handy measure of inner and outer dimensions .( Like Calipers). Opened half way a presentable Right Angle can be scribed. Both acute & obtuse angles will bisect an arc for you. ( If you remember your geometry) & as with a protractor ; poke one end in as a center punch and scratch relatively dimensionally accurate circles ( that can with that remembering stuff become polygons with more arc scribing ). That little nail cleaner/ screwdriver has rescued several pairs of glasses whose screws are getting too loose.
    Just thought I'd pass those along. Should you need inspiration to share otheer neglected uses for the original PST . I'm still looking for the illusive " sabre" blade.
    Much better a gift than those spinning doodads & Pogs.

    • @AdvancedKnifeBro
      @AdvancedKnifeBro  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Advanced Knife Bro I've also heard of clip point. Thought that was a re-ground/ polished tip that snapped after pry-bar app. fail.
      File edge does equitable job as hacksaw.
      Still some sabres on TH-cam. Most pretty rough. I'm on my third...seems sticky fingers abound these days. The hand me down sentimental fave (from Dad) was among them. Now I keep redundant.
