    Great video and very informative. The big misconception about promoting music on social media that no one ever talks about is that just because you post something amazing doesn’t mean the social platform is going to actually show it to anyone. I wish all of us indie artists the best of luck throwing darts in a darkened room at a target that doesn’t actually exist.

    I saw some videos of your channel today and had to subscribe. Would be a good idea to give some more explanation of "have good music". As this is something that creates emotions on the listener's side that can't be planned, for me it means, first of all, to have learned the basics of music production, have a good mixing and mastering, especially for the streaming platforms, and second to be yourself during the creation process, and don't follow expectations by others. In the end I try to find fans who resonate with what is part of myself in the songs. In social media the artist is the most interesting part, so self-staging would be a good idea.

    Tip 1 have good music
    Tip 2 makes social media content
    Generic advice 🙃

    • @wtflol6969
      @wtflol6969 5 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      What it actually said:
      Tip 1 *How to get feedback from your friends to see if your music is actually good.
      Tip 2 *Make social media content that's interesting on its own and not just an add for your new song.

    • @ItsMostic
      @ItsMostic 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@wtflol6969 yeeeah that's just as generic.
      feedback from friends will help you make better music but it'll barely help actually get fresh ears to listen.
      making social media content won't help very much unless you have a big budget to spend on ads.

    Should we actually create a logo and have merchandise made while we are trying to build a fan base ? I mean if someone wears our hat or shirt others will see it and talk about it and look us up - I get that. But if the fan base is say less than 200 and really not engaged isn’t it a bit unnecessary to fork out the dough to have merch made when it could possibly just end up a dusty box in the garage ?

    You have to literally drag the feedback out out people. Only one of my friends/people I know is willing to actually talk about what they hear and what they like/don't like. :P
    Also about the gigging... how would you go about music that isn't so... dancy? I don't see that being very successful at gigs with atmospheric things.

    • @TheirSavior
      @TheirSavior 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Great question! I thought the same thing until I was in a metal band. That's about the furthest from dance you can get, right? People still showed up. Our tactic was to just hop on shows where there was at least one band with a bigger following than ours. They didn't even have to sound like us, we just had to imagine if their fans would resonate with our music or not to determine if we wanted to be on the show or not.
      A metal band called Code Orange Kids did a tour with a rap artist named Ghostemane just because their vibe was similar. You can do the same!
      I hope this helps!

    • @Burstimo
      @Burstimo  5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      That's ok, just because you have dancy music doesn't mean people will jump around. Find a small band who have dancy bopping music and go to one of their gigs. People just stand there and stare at the stage, then afterwards say how incredible it was. It takes a special talent to be able to perform and get a crowd moving all together in a room as an emerging artist. If your music is atmospheric then your audience will be too and that's fine. Don't put too much focus on the things you don't have but focus on what you do have :)

      I know I'm replying to an old message, but look at Sunn O))). People love their live shows because it's an experience, you're selling an experience so just focus on how you can make it something amazing, beyond simple face-value "dancing".

    Great channel, nice also to see a uk perspective for a change with this type of video! I was wondering which of these methods you would say is more effective for non-popular music (i.e. not pop/rock/dance/rap etc.)? I don't really know of any other groups that sound similar so difficult to know how to pitch something that isn't easy to categorise, it has elements of classical, folk and many other things - a fusion.

    • @rinkaku6489
      @rinkaku6489 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd say these methods are still effective, there are always more open minded people out there willing to listen to fusions. it would just be more difficult to find the right blogs but its still possible if you send many submissions to different sites that cover one of the genres you make.
      I make experimental electronic with goth influences, so I'm in the same case of "not really fitting in"

    • @Quatrapuntal
      @Quatrapuntal 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@rinkaku6489 yes it's funny because it's a positive thing in one way, a lot of people struggle to stand out from the crowd with so much competition so it's good to have something different. Then again the industry is all based on pigeonholes, which you can understand to an extent because most people want to know what they are getting or have some point of reference. The trouble is how to market something which can't easily be described in terms of genre - that doesn't matter if people have already heard it and liked it, they don't care what genre it is, but to get new fans they have to take a bit of a 'leap of faith' I suppose

    Maintaining a social media account sounds like a nightmare. Think things are doable without needing to entertain on a daily basis with memes and such? It would be nice if artists could just be artists and not have to struggle with daily content.

    • @pgwwa2
      @pgwwa2 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It is nightmare and that bullshit takes your energy / time you could just use on making music. At the same time 20 years ago 90% of us wouldn't even have had a real shot to release music and have it heard like that. Guess we need to appreciate present times for what they are.

    I'm tempted to see what the bigger names are doing on instagram since i don't see how it can be used for music promo... I guess for bands I could see it being used for taking pictures of their performances, but not sure about solo artists, especially ones that don't look like freakin models... lol

    • @Burstimo
      @Burstimo  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The power of music videos if very unspoken. You don't need a big budget, just some knowledge and creativity. There are channels that show you how to do budget filming that looks like a big budget. Those would be easier to run through ads if you make it interesting enough like a Billie Eilish or Oliver Tree video (again, not just because they're big budgets, there are way to have low budget films that are interesting, lil dicky made an entire video on no budget and made a song about it)

    My problem is dms 😂 I don’t trust opening my dms 😂 because people say they love my music & then most the time men then start getting sexual & asking for a date or marriage 😂 .. if I’m professional & decline... they start putting my content on porn sights or fake profiles saying in doing nude live streams... etc... 😂 so I now stay away from dms but say I interact via comments always instead 🙈 it’s hard though as it’s a way to interact & gain fans but reality is ... people on social media are dangerous 🤦🏽‍♀️& id rather keep my boundaries & keep professional

    Step 1: Make all future social interactions super-awkward after running the anonymous poll, which proved without a shadow of a doubt that your music is perceived by all your friends as truly awful.

      @@learnsomethingawesome9560 No, it's the truth, I submitted two of my best songs to them, and not only there are so few blogs and people that support autotune, but there are also even fewer in hip hop genre. And this is a little fishy since hard autotune users like Travis Scott make a lot of money out of that and have many fans that like that kind of music. If you doubt my quality of music check me out on SoundCloud @northboidanny.
