I love the part where Carol offers her a cigarette and Therese abruptly says no thank you and you can see Carol is a little shook by it, because every time before that when she offered her a cigarette Therese would say yes. In that moment she realises how much Therese has changed and how she won't just do whatever Carol says anymore. Subtle but perfect.

I’ve watched this scene over and over! I felt like Therese was waiting for Carol to say the right things.. but Carol was expecting the “old” Therese. I was so frustrated, and then Carol says she loves her...whew!

Same! In this scene Theres tells Carol "No" more times than any other scene. This is why I love the ending because Theres shows Carol she's thoughtfully choosing her rather than "just saying yes and go along with everything" (reference to their climatic car scene earlier)

This acting was incredible. The way Cate looks her up and down during that long silence admiring her gives me the chills. Omg everytime I watch this I cry

All of the things she thought might have worked without making her more vulnerable than she already felt had failed. Carol realized she either had to lay her heart on the table and let things fall where they may, or risk never getting another opportunity. Therese knew her worth this time around.
My breath catches in my lungs every time I watch this scene.

"is that what comes of getting away from me?" Showing Therese’s growing maturity and finally becoming herself is so riveting, especially after we see her at her most desperate trying to contact Carol before we get this scene. Not to mention this scene also shows Carol at her most vulnerable.

@@emilyrugburn9167 no, she meant it. boundaries are important, it's not healthy to say yes to everything someone says when you don't know what you want in the first place. Therese said no to doing anything Carol would ask her, Therese said yes to being in love with her. Strong difference. The age gap plays a big part in this, it's why these relationships are shunned because the younger person is always inexperienced and daunted. Therese became a woman, which made their happy ending.

I've watched this film a few times since it came out, and it was good. But this year I watched it, and suddenly I noticed all the nuances and themes of the acting I hadn't before.
Here, I love how Thérèse is quietly angry, as you can see by the expression in her eyes and how she's answering Carol's questions. She looks like she's waiting for an apology of sorts from Carol, which she never gets because Carol. And, at the same time, it seems Thérèse wants to run straight into her arms. Very striking and so well done.
It's restrained, but so flooded with emotion at the same time.
Loved it so much. I'm glad you've uploaded this clip.
Edit: Oh and that touch from Carol was played so well. They hadn't touched in about a year. Shivers.

Did anyone notice the difference when carol says "I love you" compared to when Richard (Therese ex boyfriend) says "I love you" earlier in the film to Therese. Richards delivery of the line lacked any emotional weight as he was only looking to convince Therese of his love so she would go along with his plans of what he wanted whist Carol says it with genuine emotions.

Did you ever see how upset she got when the Paparazzi was following her. She couldn't find her Friend's House and she was furious. I think this was the second Movie that I saw based on a Patricia Highsmith Novel where a Typewriter was used. While Therese was using a Typewriter as part of her "Work", Tom used Dickie's to write A Letter that was the biggest lie this side of the Moon. Also when you saw Carol in the Diner, they used a similar Photo for one of the many editions where "Carol" is at The Diner. You have to give Therese her pros. She came a long way from being The Shopgirl a couple of months ago and now an up and coming Photographer.

Changing the career from set designer to photographer is way better for a limited time on the film. 0:59-1:02 Therese instantly knows that the woman with the high heels walking behind her is Carol (for many reasons, e.g: smelled her perfume etc) and she has that longing (missed her so dearly), still filled with love, facial expression.
1:08-1:13 But right before Carol sits, Therese's face changes, to a cold, guarded one, so as not to look totaly hurt and lost and so in love with her.
2:42-2:48 & 3:00-3:08 Therese sensed what Carol was about to say and ask her afterwards, from the start, and she acutely and without much thought denied her request, both expressively and verbally (God that coldness she had. Of course, that's not what she really wanted).

What I like about this scene is what is not said and what lies underneath, Carol tries the psychology of self pity in a way of "I'm surprised you agreed/do you hate me Therese/is this what happens when you get away from me" all rebuked by Therese comprehensively and with vigour. Carol then tries the old tactics of dangling a carrot with coming to live with her, then a meeting for dinner, I feel at this point Carol's only option and I believe it's genuine is to tell her how much she loves her, I feel Therese is taken aback by this and realises she genuinely does (time does make the heart grow fonder) I feel at the touching of her shoulder Therese has to make a decision and the end is very ambigous, does she meet to see her one last time or meet to see if their love can survive..it's a magical moment and subtly done.

Try Brokeback Mountain, an equally tragic and doomed love affair, I would say just as powerful and delivered (like Blanchett and Rooney) with great conviction by Ledger and Gylenhall..another film that wells me up inside. The scene at the end where Ennis finds Jack's dead shirt (spoilers sorry) and then hugs it...just heartbreaking.

Interesting that "I love you," three words that are so simple have been used by Todd Haynes here and in Safe (1995) so effectively and to mean such different things. Incredible scene.

    • @michaelortiz7581

@@LoveBlueOcean1 In Safe it's a coping mechanism, a last resort for Carol (lol her name is also Carol) who is basically left for dead still without any improvement of her condition. I just find it interesting that both are arguably the most emotionally pivotal moment in each respective film, and both are the same exact line and also now thinking about it both women who say the line are named Carol. Just a cool observation.

4:32-4:34 Movie and book SPOILERS: Therese thought that she shouldn't let Carol leave without saying what she wanted to say (we all know what that would be) but she couldn't say no to Jack's invitation, for some reason. I mean in the book she had an important job potential meeting in a party with the important players like the lead actress etc. The book version of the party has more gravity and importance (and for the character of Genevieve and what meant to Therese.) But here it's just a casual low profile party, she technically could have said no to Jack, as it was just a simple party really. Then she just leaves, not really done anything in that party, whereas in the book she did way more, talked with a bunch of people and Genevieve Cantrell and just straight goes to the Oak Room. Of course i don't really mean to complain, just my thoughts on this scene from the movie and some notes of the scenes i mentioned from the book and how they compare (in my opinion) to the ones from the movie. Still and probably for forever will have this movie in my heart.
