The wrong way of putting the enchantments cost over 277 levels and the correct way cost only 121 levels which has a great advantage of levels cause its way cheaper.
And the best way to get great enchantments (my opinion) is villagers, but there is also enchantment grinding which you need a lot of levels a enchantment table a grindstone and a lot of books.

@@kyleyugo129 NO YOU CANNOT USE OVER 39 LEVEL'S, it doesn't matter how much xp you have it will still say "it's to expensive" let me set an example, let's say you're enchanting your diamond sword, and you added a enchantment to your sword that cost 36 xp, and wanna add a few more enchantments, and you have 100 xp from an xp farm, when trying to add ANY enchantment to the sword it will say "too expensive" this is because you spent to much on the sword. The only way to fix this is trying to get a new sword and be wise with your enchantments

    For those curious, I added up the total levels required for the 'efficient' method, and it comes to a total of 121 levels (4 + 5 + 3 + 9 + 7 + 15 + 17 + 61) vs the earlier method with 277 levels (6 + 5 + 5 + 12 + 19 + 34 + 67 + 129).
Even disregarding intermediate / total level costs, the cost of final combine alone is rather insane; ~60 levels can mean up to 20 level 3 rolls on the enchanting table!

The most important premise in this video is incorrect, making most of the content wrong.
The number of anvil uses ("prior work" or pw) on the resulting item is always going to be *one more than the HIGHEST* of the two combined items - not the second item in the anvil. For example, combining a book with 3 uses and a book with 1 use doesn't result in 2 - it results in 4.
Because of the way you're doing it in this video, you're trying to create a sword with a pw of 6, not 2, which is why the cost is outlandish and not actually doable in Survival. When you combine the 4-enchant book with Curse of Vanishing, the resulting book has a pw of 3, not 1; then adding the Binding/Unbreaking book increases it to 4, and then adding Mending brings it to 5. You're basically making the same mistake as you demonstrated with the sword in the first place.
Items with a prior work of 0 (or 0 anvil uses) add no additional cost for the prior work. For 1 prior work, the penalty is 1 level added to the cost; for 2 prior work, the cost is 3 additional levels; for 3 prior work, it's 7, for 4 it's 15, and for 5 it's 31. You add the pw penalty for each item, so it doesn't matter what order the items are in the anvil in for this calculation.
The reason the numbers are different when you swap the books is because there is a cost for each enchant that's on the item being sacrificed (i.e., the item in the second slot). Each enchantment is a different cost - for example, Unbreaking III is 3, Mending is 2, Looting III is 6, etc. These are all listed on the link at the bottom of this post. These costs are double if you're sacrificing a piece of equipment rather than a book, by the way. But this explains why the price skyrockets when you're trying to sacrifice the combined books - it's because of the *enchantments* on the second book, not the prior work on it. (Side note: Combining two items to *upgrade* an enchantment, such as a Sharpness III book and a Sharpness III sword, will cost what the resulting enchantment will be, not what the sacrificed item is. So in this case, the cost would be 4 for Sharpness IV instead of 3 for Sharpness III. But for this post, we'll assume the max level for each enchantment.)
Here's one way you'd make your exact sword in Survival:
    1. Enchant the sword at the enchanting table first so as to avoid incurring a prior work penalty on the sword. Looting III is the most expensive enchant to sacrifice off a book (6), so go for that in the table to avoid the cost of adding it to the sword later. (Cost: 3 levels for using the enchanting table)
    2. Add one of two curses to the sword - doesn't matter which since they have the same cost. Let's say Curse of Vanishing. The sword now has two enchants with only a pw of 1. (Cost: 4 for sacrificing Curse of Vanishing)
    3. Combine the other Curse with Unbreaking III into their own book, which we'll call "CU". CU's pw = 1. (Cost: 3 for sacrificing Unbreaking III)
    4. Combine the sword with CU. The sword now has 4 enchants and a pw of 2. (Cost: 9 for sacrificing both Curse of Vanishing and Unbreaking III, plus a prior work penalty of 1 on both the book and the sword)
    5. Combine Sharpness V and Knockback II into their own book (book SK). SK's pw = 1. (Cost: 2 for sacrificing Knockback)
    6. Combine Fire Aspect II and Mending into their own book (book FM). FU's pw = 1. (Cost: 2 for sacrificing Mending)
    7. Combine SK and FM into a new book (book SKFM). SKFM's pw = 2. (Cost: 8 for sacrificing both Fire Aspect and Mending, plus 1 each for the prior work on the books)
    8. Combine the sword and book SKFM. The sword now has a pw of 3 and all 8 enchants. (Cost: 19 instead of 61, for sacrificing all 4 enchants on the book and adding 3 each for the prior work on both items)
The Ultimate Sword (no curses, includes Sweeping Edge III):
    1. Enchant the sword with Sweeping Edge III or Looting III at an enchanting table (if you get Smite, Sharpness, or Bane of Arthropods, make sure it's one of those three you want because you can't change it - hit the grinding stone with it otherwise and start over)

if you are wondering about where to get these books (Sharp 5 and Mending) - buy from a Librarian villager, their prices are fair (64 emeralds for Sharp 5 and 36 for Mending is ok) and you can zombie-cure them to lower the prices

    I play vanilla survival 1.16
I use the enchantment table... to get protection or sharpness IV if possible with additional enchantments on the gear and the rest I get from e.t. books or trading books (additional enchants are especially useful for boots)
Then I start adding enchantment books with 0 or 1 anvil uses and I stay below 39 levels to get the most optimal setup in survival without curses, I go by the cheapest first then the more expensive ones

    To explain this simply:
Each item has a counter saying how many times you hammered it. When you have all the books and items you want to combine always combine items that have the same amount of anvil uses to conserve as much xp as possible. The anvil always adds one to the item that has more anvil uses and slaps it onto the resulting item

It’s worth mentioning that investing in a good enchantment table can help sometimes too. Suppose you have an enchantment table at the maximum level. It isn’t too incredibly hard to get something like Sharpness IV, Fire Aspect II, and Knockback II on a single sword with a perfect enchantment table. After all, you can get a near-perfect pickaxe in one enchantment as well with a maxed out enchantment table. You could then enchant a different sword with Sweeping Edge III and Sharpness IV (the odds of you getting three specific enchantments for each sword is low which is why I didn’t say looting). If you really want to save levels, combine those two swords and you’ll find it’s relatively cheap and you almost have a perfect sword. They both have 0 anvil uses. Yes, it uses more resources and yes it’ll still require some levels, but you can use the grindstone for failed attempts and if you understand what enchantments you need and adapt to what you get, you save a lot of levels. I do this all the time.

I wouldn't say it's impossible but I'd say it's pretty difficult to get 3 enchantments or more at once with swords, unless you have a bussin xp farm. (or maybe its just my bad luck with swords lmfao)
But I do agree, I just enchant with sharpness 4 and hopefully get a good side enchantment, and if you have cured zombie villagers the trades are OP so you won't have to really worry about the books...
of course resetting the trades over and over again to get the ones you want can be...really....really...tiring....
I'm not a fan of Knockback, nor sweeping edge, they're definitely good PVE enchantments but I play on smps. So unless I'm specifically getting a seperate PVE sword than those aren't enchantments I'll go out of my way to get.

What I always do - before I resort to using books in an anvil, I simply enchant a few pieces of equipment (for example a few diamond swords) because that's the easiest way to get maximum level enchantments. That way I can already have about 5 enchantments just by merging 2-3 swords together. Then I just have to add something like Mending and I'm set. It's all about being efficient and going for the highest level enchants to minimise anvil usage.

    This video is wrong.
    1. Anvil uses in the first slot add up with the second slot, then +1 for the resulting slot
    2. The second slot goes into the first slot, the action costs as much as the enchantment value (Σ multiplier * level)
    3. At the end of the video the book has 4 anvil uses, not 0.
    4 anvil uses = 2^4-1 = 31 levels. Enchantment value of the book is 30 levels. This explains why it costed 61 levels. (31 + 30 = 61)
Which checks out with the equation according to the wiki:
Experience cost = [Value of sacrificed (right placed) item] + [Work Penalty of target (left placed) item] + [Work Penalty of sacrificed (right placed) item] + [Renaming Cost] + [Refilling Durability] + [Incompatible Enchantments (Java Edition)]

    If you have Item 1 = PWP4 and Item 2 = PWP5, the new item will be PWP6 (5+1).

  • @theenderpal
    @theenderpal 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

He showed us 2 most inefficient ways to enchant It doesn't work the way he says it does. He mistook Anvil mechanics all wrong.
Total cost = cost of enchantments on sacrificed item + rename cost + prior work penalty(2^n - 1, n = no. of times the item is used in anvil, previously) + repair cost of target item(if used)
Every time an item is used in anvil, it adds 1 anvil use.
If target item and sacrifice item have different anvil uses, it takes the highest number and adds 1 anvil use to resultant product.
If target item and sacrifice item have same anvil uses, it takes that number and adds 1 to the resultant product.
Do this: Put the sword in an enchantment table surrounded by 15 or more book shelves and enchant it with Unbreaking 3(or any other enchantment except mending, cause its not possible)
Take the enchanted sword with 0 anvil uses and put it in Anvil's Target slot and put a mending-1 book with 0 anvil uses in sacrifice slot. Since both the target and sacrifice items have same anvil uses i.e., 0, the resultant product would have 1 anvil use(0+1=1)
Now take fire aspect 2(XP cost = 4) with 0 anvil uses in target slot. and knockback 2( XP cost = 2) with 0 in sacrifice slot. the resultant product will have 1 anvil use on it.
now put the sword(anvil uses = 1) in target slot and put the book with knockback and fire aspect in sacrifice slot. the resultant sword would have 4 enchantments with 2(1+1) anvil uses.
Now take Looting 3(xp cost = 6) book and put it in target slot and put sharpness 5(xp cost = 5) book in sacrifice slot. put the resultant book(anvil uses = 1) in target slot and put a curse of vanishing(xp cost = 4) book in sacrifice slot. the resultant book would have 2 anvil uses.
now put the sword with 2 anvil uses in target slot and book with 2 anvil uses in sacrifice slot. The prior work penalty will be low, if you enchant this way.
You now have the ultimate sword with 7 enchantments! (with just 3(2+1) anvil uses) at the cost of 45 xp levels or may be even less, if you could get looting3(6 levels) or sharpness5(5 levels) or other sword enchantments which cost more than Unbreaking3(3levels) out of the enchantment table.
If you decide not to use enchantment table, then do this: take an unenchanted sword and add mending(2 levels)using anvil. Now take unbreaking3(3levels) and knockback2(2 levels) and merge them. Add the merged book to the sword. Now take looting3(6 levels) and fireaspect2(4levels) and merge them. Now take sharpness5(5levels) and curse of vanishing(4levels) and merge them. Now merge 1st merged book and 2nd merged book. Then add the resultant merged book with 4 enchantments to the sword.
The prior work penalty will be same in both the methods

Hate to say it, but you don't use it right either. This method might have been (somewhat) correct in version 1.14 or sooner, but I rejoined the game in 1.15 and this has not been correct since at least then.
The newly combined item will always have +1 anvil use to whichever parent item had the most uses. The absolute best thing to do is to start with all of your zero use books AND sword, then combine them into pairs. You will have a sword (with one enchantment) and a few books with two enchantments each. Then keep combining in pairs down to one item.
It works even better if you enchant the sword directly first, because you can start with a few enchants without any anvil uses yet. And also try to get the most expensive enchants on the sword early in the combo process, because it keeps the final steps lower. Just make sure to NEVER add enchants one at a time or put everything onto a single book before trying to put it onto a sword.

  • @saelo5996
    @saelo5996 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Little sidenote is that at the end and little before it the 0 anvil use book won't change the anvil-uses by bringing it down to one. The anvil will use the higher value of anvil-uses between the two items and add one to it. So when you added the Curse Of Vanishing the book was actually at an anvil-use of 3 and not 1. This also means the final book had an anvil use of 5 and not 1.
Just wanted to clarify since as you said "It can be a little hard to understand."

  • @hampustoft2221

This is close but I'm very sure that the anvil checks both items anvil usage and takes the highest number and adds to it.
The different enchantments also have a different cost (mending is cheaper than a sharpness 5 book even if both had 0 anvil uses).
Illmango did a video when the enchant system broke allowing for armor to have all protection enchants and swords to have all dmg enchants, in that video he shows what the best order of enchants was to not get "too expensive".

It's even better to pair the books then add 1 anvil use books to the sword. The reason being is that the last one will usually cost around 20 levels. Even if the total number of levels used may be the same, because of the increased costs of higher levels (meaning it takes 3 times more to go to 60 compared to 30), doing it this way saves a lot more.

    • @inkspot9572
      @inkspot9572 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Ideally, to use your example, for a sword you'd pair sharp 5 & looting, sweeping edge & fire aspect, unbreaking & knockback, then mending last in that order so that you are paying the least penalty on the most expensive enchants.

2 anvil uses + 0 anvil uses = 1 anvil use? I think I'm missing something with the explanation that is given. Doesn't Minecraft take the highest number, which is 2 in that case, and add 1 to it, making that a 3 anvil use book?
