When first released, the executive secretary of the NAACP telegraphed major newspapers around the country with a statement, erroneously claiming that the film depicted an antebellum setting, then later admitted to never having seen it. Pretty much everyone who thinks it’s racist also somehow thinks it’s set during slavery when had they just seen the movie, they would have known they were all free, because Uncle Remus leaving for Atlanta was a pivotal part of the movie. He was absolutely free to do so, but the white child (main character) loved him so much that he essentially saw him as a father figure and didn’t want him to leave. Absolutely everyone loved and respected Uncle Remus, not just the poor African American sharecroppers, but everyone from the rich white family to the poor mean white bullies (well, even if they didn’t love him, they sure respected him). Their poor sister liked him though. And then there’s a part where the there’s a poor African American boy who does various house chores where the white boys lives. Sign of the times. But when his chores are done, he gets to play with the rich white boy as equals!!! Imagine being a child in the 40s seeing this. …or a child during any of the theatrical rereleases. Seeing this in a segregated theater, yet, somehow, it’s ok for them to play together and be friends. These were the boomer children who later fought for civil rights! This movie is the wokest thing Disney has ever released that century, and people don’t even want to see it when it’s easily accessible via web search. I can’t wait for the upcoming decades when people decide that Princess and the Frog is racist too because it depicts how life was like for the African American working class during that time, how hard they had to work compared to their rich Caucasian counterparts, how “due to her background,” (they actually this) she was denied a business loan to buy property, and just like in Song of the South, the poor black child is good friends with the rich white child, and are allowed to play together as equals.
