    I've got a single malt scotch whisky from the Benromach distillery today. The 10 is their youngest age-stated expression. I'll taste it and give you my thoughts. Cheers!

    Have had several bottles of the older packaging 10. In fact the older version 10 is my 86 year old mothers favorite dram. Myself I am a big fan of the cask strength batch 1. Have a couple put away and they are still available in the US for $65-$70 so will probably get a few more. Cheers

    Definitely one of my favorite Speysiders. The cask strength versions are bursting with flavors and this 10 year old isn't half bad either. Also a good distillery to visit. I am not sure why they chill filter it and reduce their ABV for this one. Weird. This is a good one to introduce people to actual Speyside whisky. Not the sanitized nonsense generated by the other better known distilleries.

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agree! You may like it a bit more than me, though. I think it's a good "simplified" version of the house style. By no means a great 10 year old, but very solid, easy to sip, and the price matches the quality. One of my more mindless yet enjoyable go-tos. Cheers!

    That is SO funny to me. The point about your mood your palate is in and its impact to your Benromach 10 is along the lines of how I feel. I thought it might have to do with what I ate during the evening. So many times when I've had it I thought oh it's great. Another night ahh not so much. Another night wow it is so flavorful. Enjoyed this honest review.

    Haven't tried older Benromach, though I'm very happy with the current 12yo as your recommendation! I like how Benromach adds farmy and light smoky tone on typical speyside flavor, and that really gets me especially in winter.

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You're right, Benromach has great winter flavours. Such a unique profile. The 12 is by far the best value, I still can't believe the price of that one. I bought two bottles to gift to my family in Canada. They love it too!

    A decent value dram although the old bottling scored a couple more points for me. Both versions represent a good gateway to more peated whiskies.
    Have got the peated sherry cask BR incoming from Santa which should be good!

    Nice review Geoff. I'm a big fan of the older Benromach 10 but haven't tried the newer-style bottling yet. It's been interesting to see the split between those reviewers who feel it's lost some of its somewhat idiosyncratic charm as an 'old skool' Speysider versus those who haven't really detected a change (or if they have, equally enjoy the newer, more 'modern' style). I look forward to trying one of the new bottlings sometime in 2022, but there's so much whisky to try and so little time! 🤣

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I agree, it's interesting to see the split. I do like some classic and/or challenging old school flavours, but I also have zero problems with more modern whiskies as long as I like them. Benromach is admittedly less challenging nowadays, but it's still delicious stuff. More accessible? Sure, but that isn't inherently a bad thing. I tend to prefer the newer stuff. Cheers Simon! 🥃

    I have a couple of bottles of Benromach 10 and Peat Smoke, pre Rebranding, that I love, I find them so "atypically" Speysiders.... I'm still waiting to taste and compare them with the new expressions. Based on your comments I'd say the old bottles will still be my favorite, but who knows. Good review!!. Cheers my friend.

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah a lot of people do prefer the older 10. I was speaking more generally about the brand when I discussed the changes in flavour. I actually don't have a lot of experience with the older 10. Cheers.

    @davidowen2834 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi Geoff, I liked the earlier version of the 10, thought the bottle was quite classy , not like the newer bottles , which I haven’t had. Always thought that the 10 was a little sprinbanky sort of a speyside springbank?? Good, honest video Geoff, enjoyed it.Slàinte Mhath.

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well I don't get much of the springbank comparison in the 10 specifically, but I'd agree that Benromach on the whole does share some similarities. Speyside Springbank... that works!
      That being sais, the 10 is a far cry from the quality we get in the SB10. Still a good one in its own right.
      Cheers David! 🥃

    I just tried this at a bar and I gotta say the 10 is quite enjoyable! The peat and the sweet get along very nicely. I have a 10-year old Loch Lomond that reminds me a bit of it. I do not like the bottle design either though.

  • @Nikolay_Nikolov

    I've had the old pre-branding 10 yo Benromach. The price was roughly 33 euros.
    I love the old packaging. As for the the new "USSR" livery .... meh...
    I liked the character of the old 10 yo even being a little harsh and as you said - "mood based". For the money I paid for it, the whisky was pretty solid. IMHO the 43 % ABV is what really hampers this malt. Comparison to Springbank 10 is not fair at all, Springbank is leaps and bounds above Benromach 10.
    Haven't seen the rebranded bottles on Bulgarian market yet, but unless some of the high strength releases makes it to Bulgaria, I don't think I'll be rushing to buy anything from the core range.
    I also have a bottle of the old 10 yo 100 proof which I haven't opened yet.
    Cheers!

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah I know you take a firm stance when it comes to weaker abvs, and I totally understand. This one is good, but basic. Springbank 10 is absolutely leaps and bounds better than this. I'd say look out for the 2009 cask strength release if it makes it to Bulgaria. That should be right up your alley. Cheers!

    Interesting when you talk of mood and taste. I’ve found that a lot.
    One day the flavor profile blows me away, and other times it just tastes like plain vanilla whisky, and wonder what I first saw in it.
    I’ve even had entire bottles where I’ve made my mind up to never buy again, only to be super impressed with the last dram.

    Hi Geoff, Benromach 10 year, old and new vewrsions to me are not very different, I think if one considers the batch variation that normally occurs, I am not sure it has really changed other than the presentation. As well this whisky is not the only one that is different to me depending on my palate. That occurs with any whisky really. Always one of my go to drams. The 10 yr, the 10 yr imperial strength and the peated version all are wonderful and good value.

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll agree that the 10 has changed less than some of the other expressions, but I do feel like the brand is more rounded than they once were. With regards to palate, of course any whisky might taste different depending on mood or what you ate, etc. But I'd argue that some whiskies waver more than others. This one wavers a lot for me. Glad you're enjoying the whiskies, though. Thanks for commenting Kel! 🥃

    I totally agree about Benromach; it's an odd brand. The new version of their standard 12 (or whatever they call it) is overly homogenized. I haven't tried this 10. I have no doubt it's decent, I imagine it's something like a slightly beefed up Aerstone Sea Cask 10; drinkable, but forgettable.
    Unless someone buys me a bottle, I'm unlikely to ever find out.
    Bottles I'd rather buy for about the same price or less: Loch Lomand 12, Glengoyne 10, Glenmorangie 10, and Glencadam 10.

    "Like Springbank" means absolutely nothing. It is not available here and prolly never will be. It doesn't seem to be available online, either. So, it is the rarest of unicorms. To compare a decent, 'delicious', whisky to something which cannot be tasted under any circumstances is not really helpful. In fact, it is pointless. Tomorrow, I get to taste my first bottle of Benro10.

    • @Gwhisky
      @Gwhisky  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's fair if you've never had it before. It's meaningful to a lot of people who could find and enjoy Springbank up until recently. It's not been a unicorn for that long. Many of us love the flavours and are seeking out alternatives. Cheers. 🥃

    • @kellywellington7122
      @kellywellington7122 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Gwhisky I don't think that Springbank has ever been present locally. Even older timers than myself blink and stare at me unknowingly when I mention the name. The same with Hazelburn, Longrow, and Kilkerran; all entirely absent. I did find a local eatery which sells drams off an extensive whisky list and they had Springbank available for $40 a dram. Online whisky drinkers who know and like Springbank tell me not to waste my money. I have severe doubts that it is anywhere near as good as all these people think it is. I suspect it is more of a status item that tastes so much better because you have it and others don't. Scarcity is driving its 'popularity'. But, I sure as shit am not going to blow $40 just to get a sip that confirms it.
