He may used to eat like this when he was poor. Our family was poor when i was kid and we used to eat roti with butter and sugar or roti with pickle after school and used to enjoy it. Even today i enjoy simple food like dal roti.

salt has been forced upon us, yes it does enhance taste, but at the same time kills real tast of vegetable.. If you cook this using mustar oil and add some garlic, i guarantee you, that you don't need salt and it will taste much better with cut onion, dahi and achar.. You don't need to poke salt everywhere
Why we need salt in our food idk. I think it is matter of habituation. Dog don't seem to mind food without salt. They mainly want meaty flavour. If there is meat or egg smell in food, dogs readily eat it. Dogs dont eat a bit and knowing there is no salt in food, refuses to eat.
Both of you know some science. Sodium is essential for humans as well as other mammals. Animals don't need salt in food because they ingest it from other sources. Some lick it off from wherever it is available in nature like mineral deposits on rocks and some just get it from their natural diet. For humans salt is best way of getting sodium. That's why it is tasty. If something is tasty it means our body needs it/wants it. Salt makes things tasty because your brain is telling you to consume it. Also eating salt alone is unpleasant because your body wants sodium only in small amounts, and large amounts are harmful.
