This is the real life of a musician! Many people don't realize how much work and dedication is needed to achieve these results. It's so interesting to see your "behind the scenes" vlog. Thanks for sharing, keep up the great work! 👏👏👋🙂✨️🎄🎵🎶💙🎹 AL
Fr, whenever I play piano at any gig I feel like all the work I put in pays off but also not? Idk but these days people look at singers more than who's playing the backing haha. I mean no hate on singers but ig that's the pain on pianists who only play with pop singers for some sad reason.
The editing is just so fun. The flute training montage... the scramble to find the chart... the 🤨emoji that accurately replicates your own expression about ten seconds later...
Me personally as a bass trombonist I think this is an excellent representation of how much time we spend either back stage or at home just being very picky with are selves with even the simplest of things.
Let's be honest. Reading through a gig after a 4 hours long rehearsal is one thing. But doing it next to Ricky is giving it an extra layer. Well done! Happy holidays!
Flute was good! I would be nervous but you're a professional. Fun gig tho or maybe it's just you being fun for all of us. Keep smiling, you're great. 🎷
Will always remember Montreal 1980 or 81, a New Years Eve gig at my local. He had a last-minute sax player who would sit beside me at the bar studying the charts between sets. Anyways, in the last set David started a call/response with him. The guy matched him note for note, and David made it more and complicated and growly, and ... Must have been almost ten minutes of David challenging him. It was amazing.
Very well done. What a great idea. I really appreciate your candor. You show your good stuff (not surprising, you are a gifted dedicated musician), and you show your misses Comment that "he still thinks it sounds bad" was precious I've been there many times in similar situations. Can't wait for next installment Well done
Hahaaa ending was hilarious! Loved hearing your reflections on the style of gig - I’ve definitely been in similar situations before, where we’re basically just set up to be tired, but have to try our best anyway!
Always nice to see shows like this from the pit musician's perspective! Merry Christmas once more, Frankie - loved this video. Out of curiosity, other than this Christmas spectacular, have you done other pit work in the past?
It is so much fun to watch you work. It is inspiring to see how seriously you take your job, but how much enjoyment it brings to you as well. Your content always brightens my day.
So real man! I remember my first happy birthday… first salsa happy birthday was a trip. First time playing with your old teacher. Totally. Good times buddy!
Thanks for showing good posture!! You wont regret it. My trumpet days are long gone due to an arm injury made much worse from bad posture.... Nuff said. Take care of yourself. Make healthy choices. Merry Christmas 🌲🌲🙏🙏
I had to do something similar like 2 weeks ago. I'm a Sophomore in HS and had to play with my state's Wind Ensemble. Had about a day to learn Leroy Anderson's "Sleigh Ride" and John Philip Sousa's "Stars and Stripes Forever" on top of like 4 other "easier" pieces on the set list (Charlie Brown Christmas Medley, Grinch, Christmas on Broadway-John Higgins arrangment ect.) Always so much fun with limited time :))
Just a pleasure, as always. I play bari/bass clarinet (amateur) and recently, in what was meant to be a clarinet concert for me,, I was asked to play bari for another band in the same concert - I only got their music on the day too and no run-through. I had to play in every tune in the concert switching between the two bands. OK, so it was simple enough stuff, but I think I had similar feeling afterwards of 'yes, I might actually be able do this'.
I loved the "still sounds like trash" part. I so so hate when we have a concert with one rehearsal. I've recently migrated from percussions to sax and this is so relatable. My worst concert experience was when they did not have any drum sheet music. We played several pieces from pop culture (pirates of the caribbean for example) and I had the same. One rehearsal before the concert, but no sheet, no preparations as I was not given the music in advance. And most of these songs expect a complete percussion section. Doing it somewhat acceptable with a single person is so hard... I distinctly remember one of the songs needed the big 2 handed cimball at the start and the conductor made me stand up and do it that way. The catch was, I had to use the snare in the same bar. I had borrowed the soft case of the double bass, I had to throw the cimbal in, sit down and start the beat. Bleeh...
I always love your vlogs, so gun and interesting to see what’s happening leading up and during the gig! I was wondering what the name of the song is you play at 2:12?
That transition into your gig fit was SO SMOOTH! You, very respectfully, look great! I always love seeing people dress up for gigs. I’m gonna do a ‘20s look for the gig after next because I am very much extra. By the way, the flute sounded great to me! That’s a difficult part and it beautifully blended. If it was flawed, it certainly wasn’t noticeable, but I totally understand the perfectionism. I LOVE that you get to play with your high school teacher. I’m still in touch with mine and hope to someday perform with him, but I’d be a bloody mess, he was like a dad to me. Happy holidays, Frankie! Thanks for the quality content. ♥️ Edit: um ignore the wording for the ENTIRE high school teacher part I’m just now realizing how horrible that sounds ☠️
just got done with two christmas gigs (one fell on my BIRTHDAY. that was rough…) and it’s crazy to say the least. one was a gig that i played in a small local club. many were surprised by how young our 8 man band was (i’m the youngest in the band as i was 13 at the time) and how well we sounded. we had two weeks to prepare for that gig, we had 0 weeks and one day to prepare for a church gig we were invited to that night which happened to fall on my birthday which was the next day. when we arrived a whole band was there and next thing u know THEYRE LIVE STREAMING AND THREE OF OUR 8 PEOPLE SHOWED UP. i was right in front of the live stream. so fun 😭 the club gig was beautiful, everything went great…we don’t talk about the church gig 😭 love being a musician

Sang a duet with one of the students recently. She goes - "FERMATA! 8 bars!
