I'd also be really interested in this, do you usually go in with a structured lesson plan or do you allow the students to lead with what they wish to learn and then adapt from there?
@@ShaneGodliman Hello Shane, yes this is the next logical step after watching this video. I' truly dont know where to start. Even as a creative manager, this is still pretty foreign to me. Help :P In the meantime ill set up my location for reliable classes.
Currently learning French on iTalki for about a year as a student and really enjoying it. Concernig the algorythm I would agree, it sometimes is a bit unpredictable, and especially when loading a lot of profiles, some seam to reappear at the bottom again for no particular reason. But when you reload the page, profiles seem to appear very randomly so one profile that shows up at the top might appear a few pages later next time. This applies to the desktop version, haven't used the app much as I think it needs some polishing. Overall I like this platform but again this comes from a student‘s perspective.
Thanks for this video! I am both looking to start with a tutor and also become a tutor, I've been told over the years that my english is very easy to understand.
Hello Shane, Thanks for the Info you Shared, I've been working as an Esl Teacher for months now Online and I wanted to try another Platform so I applied for italki and Got accepted. 😁👍
I'm teaching Russian on italki :) I'm fluent in English, so my students can be from all over the world! If you want to learn Russian you can find me on italki as "Guli from Amsterdam"
Thank you! I’ve just had a block booking on behalf of a 6 year old- it should be ok but I didn’t know that the recommended age was 14 and up! Thank you for your info :):)
Yeah it's my least favourite thing! Obviously if you message the person before accepting the class then you can often avoid this, but I just didn't realise people would do that
Great video! Thank you for sharing! I had a few questions I was hoping you could answer. Does italki record, monitor and or critique your tutoring sessions with students? Can you turn down gigs like for the example you made with the kids? And lastly are tutors allowed to dress casually and even where a cap on their head if they wanted?
Please Help me to clarify this. It states in the Italki regulations that, we can only receive 5 attendance warnings and then after Italki will deactivate the account and The money will be freezed. But can anyone let me know this happens if we get, 5 warnings within a month Or 5 warnings all time
I’m a native English speaker learning Spanish and teaching online would be a perfect job for me but imagine by now the market is saturated and not that high of demand 😏. Which language is in the highest demand currently? Anyone know? Just curious. Great video 👍🏼
(Totally misread this at first) Yeah this is a tough one, but I think the best thing you can do is to prepare a lot of basic topics, questions, different things to give you things to keep the conversation moving, or even different content like pictures and videos if you need extra assistance getting them to understand something. I’ve found with teaching English most people have at least a tiny bit if knowledge so will be able to string a couple of basic sentences together at least. Ultimately prepare lots of resources and content would be my advice
Thanks very much for this, Shane! So useful as I'm currently thinking about starting to teach on iTalki, and I live in the UK. Can I ask how much you charged when you first got started on the platform?
Hi Shane, from another Shane! Seems we have a few things in common… I’m called Shane, I’m British, I speak Spanish and I’ve just become a community English tutor on italki :D I’ve also had some ideas floating around in my head for a few years about creating a youtube channel and podcast content and, for whatever reason, I’ve been putting it off. Maybe the tutoring will give me the kick up the arse I needed :D Just wanted to say, thanks for sharing your experiences. It’s really encouraging for those of us starting out. Especially the cons (forewarned is forearmed!) I’ve just had my first lesson request so naturally I’m a little nervous, but excited to get started. Can I ask, when you started out, were you working another job and, if so, how did you find balancing the teaching alongside it? I ask because I work full time right now so I think it might be quite challenging at times! Cheers :)
Hey Shane! Great name haha 🙌🏽 when I started on italki I was kind of transitioning between things so I was doing some bar work and some other teaching but then not long after the lockdowns started so I was a bit more limited at times with my choices haha. But ultimately I decided to focus on teaching English because I couldn’t balance the other stuff as well
Unfortunately because they had a big influx of new teachers last year they’ve limited entry for certain languages yeah, but hopefully it will be back open in the future! There are other similar websites like preply etc that might have availability
Hey Michael, to be honest they started coming in pretty quickly, I didn’t do anything specifically to promote them I just opened up my calendar a lot. And yes my classes focus mostly on conversation practice
To be honest I got my first requests a couple of days after being approved, I didn’t do anything to promote it but I did have quite low prices when I started
For example how much time you can be available for classes, which language you’re teaching and how in demand it is, what previous experience you have, the prices you charge, what your expenses are etc. It is possible, but it might be harder for some people that it would be for others in my opinion
The majority of my students have been adults, often professionals, sometimes university students, to be honest theres a real mix, I’ve had people studying during uni and others studying during retirement! Technically italki’s policy states that you need to be 14 to join but there are also parents who create an account for their children to have classes, I don’t have any experience with teaching children so I refer those classes on to other people if I get them
@@ShaneGodliman I've been tutoring ESL for more than 2 years on another platform. My student mix is exactly like yours. My oldest student is 80. I try to teach only adults over 18 but have a few younger. My income is like yours. You did a good job of describing what ESL tutoring is all about.
I also don't like the 12 hour thing! I don't like being about to go to bed and getting a lesson request in the morning. I need more time than that to prep a class properly! Especially at the beginning when I didn't have material prepared yet.
im really not at that level but i really want to start teaching and give that leap of faith persuing that online .... i really love children as well, i would really appreciate an honest asnwer from you as a person who tried itaki as atutor
I don’t think it matters whether you’re teaching children or adults, you have to make a video showing you can speak the language properly to be accepted as a community tutor of a given language. Of course if you have a profesional title you can use that as proof as well
You are classed as self employed when you work through italki so you would need to register the appropriate information in your country as far as taxes etc, italki don’t deal with that side of it
I think how good the money is depends on where you live. If you are teaching English and charging 15 an hour, and live in the US, then that isn't that great. If you are living in Cambodia or the Philippines. Well that is a different story all together.
I'd love to hear more about how you structure your conversation classes as a community tutor
Maybe I could make a separate video on that soon 😊 thanks!

Have you ever considered teaching your native language?
I have thought about it, i might look into it more as Im a student and could do with some extra money, especially in times like this

Hi. What do you need to do for the application. Do you need to do a video etc. What is best to say about yourself also
It seems italki is not accepting English teachers at the moment...guess I shall have to wait!
Yeah I’m not sure exactly how it works and when they’ll open up again but I’m sure they’ve had a big influx over the last year

No, it's not as easy to become a tutor: I looked into it and italki just said that they didn't need any more teachers for English and Polish.

Italki doesn’t currently offer group classes, you can do classes for couples but otherwise it’s just 1-1
How did you find getting "requests at first" plus are your lessons mostly conversation ?

Do italki students look for English teachers with a particular dialect or accent, or does that not really matter to them?
Some will yes, but not all of them
For how much they hide profile?
