Here's what you don't get. She'll only have the rights to her current unfinished album that she's working on now with the other label. Scooter could ban her from performing her own songs. How does she do a concert without her catalog of music? She'd only be able to perform in concert her future music. That's it. He can and likely will do that. Then what? And if you download or buy any of the past music or it's played on the radio, he gets the royalty, she gets nothing. Anyone who thinks it's no big deal is crazy. It's a very big deal and a huge precedent is about to be made that will change the music industry for good for all artists. Time will tell if that will be a good or very bad change. It's just not OK that she literally made Big Machine huge and he sold her out like that to the point that she may never be able to perform her own songs again or profit from them. I have some serious concerns about Taylor Swift. I have done a lot of research on her, but I think you all can absolutely feel empowered to do your own research into this rather than taking my word for it. Not trying to rain on anyone’s parade. I know she has a lot of fans who are very excited when she puts out new music, but this has been on my mind. Are we really not trying to hold Taylor Swift accountable for the time she took to Twitter to defend herself using feminism about a line in the TV show Ginny and Georgia yet remained silent when her fans unleashed racist threats of death on the actress (a woman of color)? This was two years ago and still no comment from her or her team. This was absolutely hypocritical and utterly self-serving, and, ironically, it was in the name of feminism. There was also her attempt to silence a blogger for saying she should denounce white supremacy in 2017. This was after a group of white supremacist fans insisted on public forums throughout the internet that she shared their beliefs and agenda. They even went as far as to call her their Aryan Goddess, as if she were some sort of Nazi figurehead. That’s pretty blasphemous stuff, and you’d think she and her team would want to address this directly with them, or even better, make a public statement unequivocally denouncing white supremacy, but she/they didn’t. it’s curious that she threatened the blogger who claimed she should denounce the white supremacists rather than the white supremacists themselves. That was just not it. Honestly it gave me the creeps and still does to this day. While I do not believe her beliefs are in line with white supremacy, I do believe that she wanted those white supremacist fans to continue buying her albums/ merch and occupying seats at her concerts, and that’s still a problem. I know she now has spoken about white supremacy as being a deplorable thing, but that does not change the very disturbing way her team reacted in this situation or the fact that she has attempted to sweep this under the rug rather than confront how her behavior was problematic. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) stepped up as a result to admonish her team about their unlawful attempt to suppress the blogger’s right to first amendment-protected speech. She appeared to respond to the backlash in her documentary, Miss Americana, but it feels like a very contrived effort to win back the favor of the more liberal fans she’d offended, and an attempt to appease the “cancel culture” that had come for her. And then she tells her fans to “Let (Scott Borchetta and Scooter Braun) know how you feel” in response to the Masters Controversy, only to say nothing when fans released Braun and Borchetta’s addresses online and sent death threats to Braun and his children? It’s giving “I’m a super powerful person who gets my way by siccing my rabid fans on all my foes” and I am beyond grossed out by it. This could easily have turned deadly. It seems like people are intent on dismissing this as “just typical fandom culture” and that feels dangerous. We need to draw the line at some point, I feel, and set some expectations about ethical use of celebrity platforms. While obviously Taylor cannot control her fans, she can control her use of her voice and platform and she has wielded them dangerously. I had loved Taylor as a public figure for years and spent a lot of time, listens, and money supporting her (even at 19 in 2011 crying tears of joy at a concert when she came on stage), but at this point I have an unease about her that I just cannot shake. I don’t mean to be libelous but it feels arguably evil. How could she put someone in a position to be attacked by her fandom and say nothing in their defense in not one but MULTIPLE instances? In both the Antonia Gentry (from Ginny and Georgia) situation and the Scooter Braun situation, Taylor started the conversation. And still in both cases she opted out of the conversation when death threats were being made, even as HOME ADRESSES were published. The same happened to a critic who gave Folklore a less-than-perfect score. This is so far out of hand. What makes the Ginny and Georgia incident all the more egregious is the fact that she even claimed feminism in defense of herself, only to say nothing when fans went after a woman less established in her career than Taylor (and with less privilege and platform). Less than a year prior, during the George Floyd protests, she had used her platform (Twitter) to say that she was committed to being “loudly and ferociously anti-racist” but her words rang hollow after the Ginny and Georgia incident. Given her behavior, it seems that Taylor’s claims to feminism and anti-racism are entirely exploitative and self-serving. To her other fans, all the love to you, but it’s a bit eerie to me that for so many of you, your allegiance to her outweighs your principles of right and wrong. I have been told it seems like I am trying to spread hate or tear her down, but that’s missing the big picture. I have faced harassment from Swifties when I am only trying to bring attention to a conversation that I think is critical as it relates to fandom culture in general, and certainly Taylor is a major example of that. I do not understand why in fandom culture there appear to be only two modes: Stan/fan or “hater” who is pro-cancel culture. I am hoping we can start to embrace a culture of accountability rather than one of cancellation. She’s been heavily criticized for her silence, and in the ways she has responded to this criticism, I applaud her. But all of those times prove to be performative when she’s silent in situations where speaking up really counts.

My point was, music labels make mega money of which the artist only receives a small percentage of that money. Micheal Jackson is a great example. He owned half of Sony and when many of their artists were going thru financial problems he would give them their publishing. He did that for many many many artists.
Evelyn Grace she was never offered the label. she was offered to sign a 10 year contract in which for every song she put out, she could buy back one of her old ones. potentially causing her millions because she would be comited to this label, and wouldn't be able to work on her personal projects. They excluded the fact that the CEO of Big Machine did give Taylor Swift an “opportunity” to own her master recordings but in the shadiest way possible. He basically gave Taylor Swift an ultimatum telling her that she can “earn” an old album for each new album she turned in. That is absolutely ridiculous because 10 years down the road she’d be in the exact same position, so Taylor had to make the excruciating choice to leave.

She didn't want to stay. She just wanted to buy her masters and walk away from them (and likely Scooter). Since she refused, they are doing exactly what she says they are doing: Bullying her, messing with her career, and holding her songs hostage. It's ridiculous. She's the biggest artist on Big Machine, and they aren't happy she didn't stay with them. But, if it were me, I wouldn't have stayed either.

It sounds like her being "given the opportunity to own her masters" was them trying to lock her into another contract, which isn't the same as what she asked for. Maybe they intended to sell the label regardless of whether she re-signed or not, and she would've been putting her future in the hands of the highest bidder. Or maybe she could buy them back, but only by buying the company. Either way, I highly doubt they would've sold them back to her barring those two options, as the label would've been virtually worthless without her masters.
She should do it like JoJo where since she couldn't get the master recordings she instead re-song and remixed all of her old songs. Now you can listen to all her music from when she got screw over from her other company.

Artists literally need to stand up for themselves. And that's not just music industry artists but in other industries too. Like models are not breaking their silence. Actors, dancers, junior artists etc. They need to come up cause it's high time now!
That's the reason why I prefer Independent record under own. Then I don't have to face such kind of problems in the future and own my own masterpieces. I am happy with it, though I still didn't get huge exposure as an indie artist. But I am truly happy with my pieces of stuff.
Something not mentioned in this piece was something Taylor said about the offer to buy back her masters. If I remember correctly as to what she said, I believe she said that the offer to her was that if she signed a new record deal with Big Machine that for every new album she produced going forward that she would be “given” the masters to one old album. She obviously refused that “deal.”

To be honest Taylor rerecorded her albums was a marketing genius and actually helped make her more money and saved her more money than if she actual bought the masters of all these tired old albums that are over a decade old and also the sales of those old albums has already slowed down as well. Like her masters is worth about $140 millions and if she actually bought them straight out she would lose money just buying the masters because those albums are already been out in the market for decades and most of her fans already bought them decade ago. Taylor already made her money from those albums and still continues to get whatever royalties from it from Big Machine who by the way her daddy manager is a major share holder. He was also an early investor if Big Machine that created Taylor's Career. She and her dad knew how much it would cost to straight out buy the masters. It was not worth their investment. She rerecorded her old tired albums and stirring up this controversy about how she couldn't buy her masters back is all an ingenious marketing ployed to get all her fans to rebuy all her old music again and again. Taylor has always been good at marketing and profitting and her fans will just eat it up. Just look at the sales of "Taylor Version" all old music slightly changed but selling faster as if it's a hit new albums they haven't own yet.

Someone dug into the idol contracts because this year Madison was a minor. The label keeps 85% of the album royalties, the artist only 15%. The label is in it for themselves. The record label will own the masters.
I'm kinda on the fence with this one. The artists create the music, and as such, they should be compensated for what they do. But it is the label that finance that albums creation, ie the studio time, the session players, the videos and the like. The situation she finds herself in is not new. The music "business" has always taken advantage of those who wanted to get there music to the mainstream market.

I’ve been listening to Taylor ever since I was 4 years old, I’ve always loved her (I don’t like her current music now cause it’s so quirky but I still care). And if you download or buy any of the past music or it's played on the radio, he gets the royalty, she gets nothing. Anyone who thinks it's no big deal is crazy. It's a very big deal and a huge precedent is about to be made that will change the music industry for good for all artists. Time will tell if that will be a good or very bad change. It's just not OK that she literally made Big Machine huge and he sold her out like that to the point that she may never be able to perform her own songs again or profit from them. I have some serious concerns about Taylor Swift. I have done a lot of research on her, but I think you all can absolutely feel empowered to do your own research into this rather than taking my word for it.
Not trying to rain on anyone’s parade. I know she has a lot of fans who are very excited when she puts out new music, but this has been on my mind. Are we really not trying to hold Taylor Swift accountable for the time she took to Twitter to defend herself using feminism about a line in the TV show Ginny and Georgia yet remained silent when her fans unleashed racist threats of death on the actress (a woman of color)? This was two years ago and still no comment from her or her team. This was absolutely hypocritical and utterly self-serving, and, ironically, it was in the name of feminism.
There was also her attempt to silence a blogger for saying she should denounce white supremacy in 2017. This was after a group of white supremacist fans insisted on public forums throughout the internet that she shared their beliefs and agenda. They even went as far as to call her their Aryan Goddess, as if she were some sort of Nazi figurehead. That’s pretty blasphemous stuff, and you’d think she and her team would want to address this directly with them, or even better, make a public statement unequivocally denouncing white supremacy, but she/they didn’t.
it’s curious that she threatened the blogger who claimed she should denounce the white supremacists rather than the white supremacists themselves. That was just not it. Honestly it gave me the creeps and still does to this day. While I do not believe her beliefs are in line with white supremacy, I do believe that she wanted those white supremacist fans to continue buying her albums/ merch and occupying seats at her concerts, and that’s still a problem. I know she now has spoken about white supremacy as being a deplorable thing, but that does not change the very disturbing way her team reacted in this situation or the fact that she has attempted to sweep this under the rug rather than confront how her behavior was problematic. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) stepped up as a result to admonish her team about their unlawful attempt to suppress the blogger’s right to first amendment-protected speech.
She appeared to respond to the backlash in her documentary, Miss Americana, but it feels like a very contrived effort to win back the favor of the more liberal fans she’d offended, and an attempt to appease the “cancel culture” that had come for her.
And then she tells her fans to “Let (Scott Borchetta and Scooter Braun) know how you feel” in response to the Masters Controversy, only to say nothing when fans released Braun and Borchetta’s addresses online and sent death threats to Braun and his children? It’s giving “I’m a super powerful person who gets my way by siccing my rabid fans on all my foes” and I am beyond grossed out by it.
This could easily have turned deadly. It seems like people are intent on dismissing this as “just typical fandom culture” and that feels dangerous. We need to draw the line at some point, I feel, and set some expectations about ethical use of celebrity platforms. While obviously Taylor cannot control her fans, she can control her use of her voice and platform and she has wielded them dangerously.
I had loved Taylor as a public figure for years and spent a lot of time, listens, and money supporting her (even at 19 in 2011 crying tears of joy at a concert when she came on stage), but at this point I have an unease about her that I just cannot shake. I don’t mean to be libelous but it feels arguably evil. How could she put someone in a position to be attacked by her fandom and say nothing in their defense in not one but MULTIPLE instances? In both the Antonia Gentry (from Ginny and Georgia) situation and the Scooter Braun situation, Taylor started the conversation. And still in both cases she opted out of the conversation when death threats were being made, even as HOME ADRESSES were published. The same happened to a critic who gave Folklore a less-than-perfect score. This is so far out of hand. What makes the Ginny and Georgia incident all the more egregious is the fact that she even claimed feminism in defense of herself, only to say nothing when fans went after a woman less established in her career than Taylor (and with less privilege and platform). Less than a year prior, during the George Floyd protests, she had used her platform (Twitter) to say that she was committed to being “loudly and ferociously anti-racist” but her words rang hollow after the Ginny and Georgia incident. Given her behavior, it seems that Taylor’s claims to feminism and anti-racism are entirely exploitative and self-serving.
To her other fans, all the love to you, but it’s a bit eerie to me that for so many of you, your allegiance to her outweighs your principles of right and wrong. I have been told it seems like I am trying to spread hate or tear her down, but that’s missing the big picture. I have faced harassment from Swifties when I am only trying to bring attention to a conversation that I think is critical as it relates to fandom culture in general, and certainly Taylor is a major example of that. I do not understand why in fandom culture there appear to be only two modes: Stan/fan or “hater” who is pro-cancel culture. I am hoping we can start to embrace a culture of accountability rather than one of cancellation.
She’s been heavily criticized for her silence, and in the ways she has responded to this criticism, I applaud her. But all of those times prove to be performative when she’s silent in situations where speaking up really counts.

It sounds like her being "given the opportunity to own her masters" was them trying to lock her into another contract, which isn't the same as what she asked for. Maybe they intended to sell the label regardless of whether she re-signed or not, and she would've been putting her future in the hands of the highest bidder. Or maybe she could buy them back, but only by buying the company. Either way, I highly doubt they would've sold them back to her barring those two options, as the label would've been virtually worthless without her masters.
She should do it like JoJo where since she couldn't get the master recordings she instead re-song and remixed all of her old songs. Now you can listen to all her music from when she got screw over from her other company.

Artists literally need to stand up for themselves. And that's not just music industry artists but in other industries too. Like models are not breaking their silence. Actors, dancers, junior artists etc. They need to come up cause it's high time now!
I’m all for the hardworking artist all the way..they’re the one who puts the effort and talent to their own craft. Give them their due.
That's the reason why I prefer Independent record under own. Then I don't have to face such kind of problems in the future and own my own masterpieces. I am happy with it, though I still didn't get huge exposure as an indie artist. But I am truly happy with my pieces of stuff.

Something not mentioned in this piece was something Taylor said about the offer to buy back her masters. If I remember correctly as to what she said, I believe she said that the offer to her was that if she signed a new record deal with Big Machine that for every new album she produced going forward that she would be “given” the masters to one old album. To be honest Taylor rerecorded her albums was a marketing genius and actually helped make her more money and saved her more money than if she actual bought the masters of all these tired old albums that are over a decade old and also the sales of those old albums has already slowed down as well. Like her masters is worth about $140 millions and if she actually bought them straight out she would lose money just buying the masters because those albums are already been out in the market for decades and most of her fans already bought them decade ago. Taylor already made her money from those albums and still continues to get whatever royalties from it from Big Machine who by the way her daddy manager is a major share holder. He was also an early investor if Big Machine that created Taylor's Career. She and her dad knew how much it would cost to straight out buy the masters. It was not worth their investment.
She rerecorded her old tired albums and stirring up this controversy about how she couldn't buy her masters back is all an ingenious marketing ployed to get all her fans to rebuy all her old music again and again. Taylor has always been good at marketing and profitting and her fans will just eat it up. Just look at the sales of "Taylor Version" all old music slightly changed but selling faster as if it's a hit new albums they haven't own yet.

I'm kinda on the fence with this one. The artists create the music, and as such, they should be compensated for what they do. But it is the label that finance that albums creation, ie the studio time, the session players, the videos and the like. The situation she finds herself in is not new. The music "business" has always taken advantage of those who wanted to get there music to the mainstream market.

I’ve been listening to Taylor ever since I was 4 years old, I’ve always loved her (I don’t like her current music now cause it’s so quirky but I still care).
