This film is hypnotic in its own right. I didn't catch this film until DVD but what an authentic period piece this film is. It definitely captures the time period as if the filmmaker went back in time with a camera to shoot it.
Well he has been cobbler for many years before this, just because. He studies endlessly for a character which means he surely made some dresses before filming and if he liked it why not keep doing something he already have started since he don't act anymore.
This scene is so sensual in a way and the ASMR gives it the hypnotic touch. I almost did not watch this movie because all the "it's so slow and boring" -comments. But I was mesmerized from start to finish.

Remember at the beginning when she told her brother, “why don’t you go out to the country tonight?” And lo and behold he meets this girl at the restaurant the next day? I think these two have some kind of deal with that hotel kitchen to find pretty girls for Reynolds to dress and then discard. It’s never stated but the behavior tells you everything. THAT is good writing!

Entirely wrong. That line reflects his obsessiveness. He's saying that a dressmaker can shape the contours to enhance a flat woman's bust, but then he adds "If I choose to," meaning that some designs are specifically FOR women who aren't buxom. A few seconds had passed before he added that part, indicating that he was thinking about the previous comment, which he then clarified. Very cerebral dialogue on Anderson's part.

I haven’t seen the movie. But if the woman is a model (and not a customer), then it’s part of the designer’s artistic vision as to whether he wants to accentuate the breasts. If she is a client, it’s his job to make her look good, but give her what she asks for.
Reynolds is an extremely controlling person and this reflects that aspect of his craft. He as the tailor or dressmaker is entirely in control of the wearer's appearance, he decides which features to accent and which to conceal etc. So he's just saying that by not having a very strong bust, her figure is a sort of blank canvas that he can influence however he likes.
He called her perfect. He didn't actually want to give her bigger breasts, even though he could. Even later, at the end of the scene, after they've taken the measurements, Cyril tells Alma that she has "the ideal shape" - that Alma is perfect in Reynolds' eyes.
Having not seen this whole movie (yet) i get the sense that the woman DDL is measuring is a bit upset about having the other woman (his assistant?) is there too taking her measurements. As if she’s embarrassed or maybe she wanted just to be alone with DDL? People who have seen this movie how far off am I?
I mean it doesn't take a genuis to read the room, doesn't matter the context she obviously has a problem with the lady being there. Compared to how she was before the lady wasn't there.
