You get used😊 it does not smell t h a t bad at the factory acctually. The fish smell verse then it taste (salty). Nowadays I get hungery when I can sence the smell of Surströmming😄
We have surströmming's kinda "nice" cousin here in Norway "Rakfisk". It's fermented trout. it doesn't smell as bad. But it comes with a warning "If you have a bad immune system or you are pregnant. Don't eat his"

However, a lot of people i scared of the smell, but when you have the right ingredient with it (varm smashed newpickt potato, shopped garlic and probably the worlds best butter "Bregott" on a piece of flatbread, well I have transformed many people to become "Surströmming lovers". I like really fishy fish, like salted herring (like in Russian shuba) and mackerel, but I'm guessing surströmming is quite a bit fisher than that. I would still like to try it though. I hope someday to meet someone who enjoys it and will share. It must be good with potatoes and onions, which is how I like to eat herring.

Well, this is probably Sweden traditional food (junkfood as some people call it). However, few years ago, a guy (and his family) from Sweden came to my place in Serbia and we served our varied traditional food. He was literally blowminded (said something: "I did not know that there is something like this").
First impression, yes it smells perhaps "bad", the strange thing is after eating it with the correct ingredient's, then it does not smell so bad. First time direct from a can? So so bad, and what a waste of a delicatess 😳

Come on, it just smells wery salty and the taste is just the same, wery salty soft fish. The trick is to eat it the right way, NOT as in many clips just take a fish and eat = totaly wrong. There are some nice YT clips on who to eat it!
Not sure why so many comment assuming you will stink to high heaven. The fish ferments IN THE CAN. Not at the factory. Will just be like any other fish handling factory nub.
