It's become the main lens on my OMD EM10II. Gorgeous and small. Sharp and conteasty images. Lovely out of focus background too. The 14-42 EZ s always seem to break.
The GX8 is one of my all-time favorite cameras. It’s always good to hear someone singing its praises, especially if that someone is very experienced in photography. I think the more you use the GX8, the more you’ll like it. It is not only very capable but a lot of fun! And yes, this camera really is relevant even in 2021. In closing, thank you Brian for posting yet another informative and enjoyable video. Subscribed.
My oly 17 mm is on its way from Hongkong China to Europa. My two "nines" are prepared for the perfect normal view, after judging the Sigma 19 mm f2.8 as too narrow and its AF-speed as too slow. The Pergear 12 mm f2.0 offers the ideal focal length for M4/3, but unfortunately has no autofocus. The sharpest images are obtained by deactivating the in camera O.I.S. You will need both the 17 mm and the 12 mm to be able to select the appropriate image section. Pure joy to use it with the Lumix GX and the G! Your Lumix GX8 is a standout , versatile and sophisticated camera that will last a long time if you manage shutter shock by "stabilizing off". Thank you for your beautiful pictures.
What a wonderful discussion, I am now going to charge the battery in my LUMIX GX8 and go outside to take some photos. I am also subscribing to your channel right now. :)
Thanks, Brian, for driving up used GX8 prices, lol! I just bought a used silver one from B&H Photo with their condition rating of 9. It turns out to have had only 260 shutter counts, can hardly tell it from new. I paired it with the Zuiko 12-45 f/4.0 Pro, which makes for a very nicely balanced splash-resistant package. The look and feel are outstanding, and there is nothing wrong with the images either. I also have the G9, which I love, but I think this GX8 is a keeper too.

I've got 2 GX-8s for video. They will do 4K (on the AC adapter) video until they fill the SD card and never overheat. My primary primary is the Leica 15mm f1.7.
@zulfikarwijaya-albatuni 99% of my videos as static shots, so I looked in the manual. Panasonic turns ibis off in 4k mode because it is noisey. And likely the processor can't keep up.
Nicely put together and explained, it’s surprising what you can get from an older model if you know what you are doing, I use an old Fuji xt1 which a lot would say has had its day but like you it’s good enough when I brought it and still is

@@ThatMicro43Guy Thank you. Yes, especially in the South Island, where almost everything man-made is almost made to compliment the reserves/nature. There's absolutely no need for a 100mp monster Fuji middle format for every shoot....
The lenses are mix and match but as you observed there are some differences in the way the back handles them. The camera firmware has a 'look-up table' for the lenses. The trick with a Lumix lens on an Olympus back is to ensure the Lumix lens has been updated on the the Olympus camera. This sorts out correction and focussing foibles. Most of the MFT lenses will already be in the look-up tables but maybe not the latest version, even if the lens has been updated (on a Lumix back). Updating Lumix and Olympus is different. On Lumix the file is copied to the SD card. On Olympus a computer application is used (Olympus Camera Updater). The majority of my lenses are Lumix but I assume the reverse is true. If the lens is not in the look-up then the exif will report 'unknown lens', such as most adapted lenses. If we look deep into the exif of the Lumix pancake 20mm f/1.7 we find it is actually a Leica. The other discreet pancake to check out is the Lumix GX PZ14-42 which is far better than the Olympus EZ14-42 in operation, it's also an 'X' lens. For a VLog camera check out the Lumix G7 which are going dirt cheap used now; it's something they do really well.
I have GAS. I own 11 cameras, including my new iPhone. It's been about two years since I've bought a new camera and I've got the itch. I admit, I don't go out to shoot as much as I'd like now, since I've had to take care of my mother and due to lockdown in the last couple of years. I'm looking into trying my first micro 4/3 camera so I can walk around with it. We'll see where I land.
Brian, thanks for a very informative and useful video on the GX8. I have an EM1-II and an EPL7 that I have had for several years. I like both. The EPL7 is unobtrusive and really convenient to carry around but I miss having a viewfinder and I think it might be near the end of its life. The replacement EPL9 EPL10 seem to have hardly any advantages over the EPL7 and many facilities that I use, like MySets have actually been removed. After watching your video I liked the look of the GX8. Its view finder, screen and weather sealing are particularly attractive but good ones seem hard to find. So I had a look at its replacement the GX9 - what a disappointment. The GX9 has no weather sealing and the screen cannot swing forward. Lumix seems to have gone the same direction as Olynpus and dumbed-down their entry-level cameras. If the GX9 had included the same facilities as the GX8 that it replaced I would probably have bought one, possibly new. Ha well. I shall keep on looking for a decent second-user GX8. Thanks for the video. You have a new subscribe to your channel.
Thanks for the comments Keith. As I said in the video it is actually larger than my olympus EM1 but I like the 'rangefinder' type form factor. One thing I didnt mention about the GX8 compared to the GX7 & GX9 is the viewfinder is oriented toward 4:3 stills shooting as its default image and it crops down to the 16:9 on video. I believe the others start with a 16:9 image and crop the sides for the 4:3. As I'm primarily a stills shooter I think this gives the GX8 a big advantage.

Excellent point, yes, you are right it will. All the Lumix/Olympus lenses are adjusted in the camera and the lens to a degree by a profile in the camera/lens firmware to take into account things such as distortions, vignetting and colours etc. but a good lens is going to have less adjustment. I'll be honest, I wouldn't know where to look or what to look for as I don't use a mac or a PEN either. However, most updates including firmware seem to be done through the Olympus Workspace program which I have found here support.olympus-imaging.com/owdownload/ Best wishes and good luck
Question: that you know of, are there differences between a US and UK GX8? MPB sold mine to someone else! I had it locked on a trade-in quote and they sent it elsewhere. 😡😡🤬🤬 Now I’m staring at TEN (10) GX8’s on the MPB UK site, and questioning support - demanding they send me one of those. (Rocket science it’s not)
As far as I know imports whether new or used are not supported in different countries. There are often different specs for things like recording times on video modes too. They usually have a different model number and can also be identified by their serial number. Your call I’m afraid.
They are very similar. I find that the Olympus and the lumix are situated between each other’s ranges with lumix having the 12,15, 20 & 25 and oly having the 12, 17 & 25 . you really need to make a choice which way to go as they are so close to each other’s to not make buying all cost effective but far enough apart in focal length to be important. If I’d gone down the lumix route I would have stuck with that as it is. Having the oly make the lumix a poor choice for me purely on focal length choice not quality. All good lenses in my opinion
I use the oly 17mm as my primary lens on my g9. M43 needs to be experienced.

I'll be honest, I wouldn't know where to look or what to look for as I don't use a mac or a PEN either. However, most updates including firmware seem to be done through the Olympus Workspace program which I have found here support.olympus-imaging.com/owdownload/
Best wishes and good luck
@@ThatMicro43Guy Thanks Brian.for the useful pointers. All the best.
I would prefer the sigma 16mm 1.4.
I would too.......if it matched the price and weight of these ones lol
That footpath shot would look great in b/w.
Question: that you know of, are there differences between a US and UK GX8? MPB sold mine to someone else! I had it locked on a trade-in quote and they sent it elsewhere. 😡😡🤬🤬
Now I’m staring at TEN (10) GX8’s on the MPB UK site, and questioning support - demanding they send me one of those. (Rocket science it’s not)
As far as I know imports whether new or used are not supported in different countries. There are often different specs for things like recording times on video modes too. They usually have a different model number and can also be identified by their serial number. Your call I’m afraid.
@@ThatMicro43Guy thanks so much! I have a GX85 on hold, but sticking to the GX8!
That 17mm seems much like my Lumix 20mn F/1.7.
They are very similar. I find that the Olympus and the lumix are situated between each other’s ranges with lumix having the 12,15, 20 & 25 and oly having the 12, 17 & 25
. you really need to make a choice which way to go as they are so close to each other’s to not make buying all cost effective but far enough apart in focal length to be important.
If I’d gone down the lumix route I would have stuck with that as it is. Having the oly make the lumix a poor choice for me purely on focal length choice not quality.
All good lenses in my opinion
Hlo sir. I am from English rose
Hello my friend and thank you so much for making me welcome at the English Rose cafe in the past three weeks I’ve been in Cyprus. Best wishes. Brian
