- The legendary actor returns to the Criterion Closet, where she shares her love for independent American gems such as Barbara Loden’s WANDA and Michael Roemer’s NOTHING BUT A MAN, talks about Roberto Rossellini’s work with Ingrid Bergman, and selects Italian cinema classics I KNEW HER WELL and JULIET OF THE SPIRITS.
The Return of the Queen.
Personally I like The Femaleship of the Ring

Isabelle Huppert in The Piano Teacher is my favorite performance of all time. Clicked on this so fast. 😅
same 😅
Ma Mere is even freakier and more demanding a performance.
Likewise.
Same!
A truly masterful performance!
71 years old. HOW IS THAT POSSIBLE??? Queen!
Right?! Impossible
@@marianne22222 i guess whites also don’t cracks
She could easily pass for 50 ❤
An aeternal beauty. Ageless
Isabelle Huppert is one of the best actresses in the business. Love her movie choices.
I love that she didn't feel the need to speak directly at *me* ... she just spoke and I listened intently.
Isabelle can come back as many times as she wants.
She's so real for calling La Ceremonie a masterpiece, truly an unforgettable film.
_Isabelle Huppert In The Criterion Closet_ deserves it's own physical Criterion blu release w/supplements.
AGREED!!!!!
It's just a montage of her humming.
A Queen in her church! She really deserved a return! Great pics this time too!
"La Cérémonie" is truly a masterpiece... must see !!!
Thank you..!
Can’t wait to see it
Seriously, one of my all time faves
one of the greatest films of all times
This woman is kind of an everlasting cinema crush for me. She's aging so beautifully. "La cérémonie" is, indeed, a very powerful movie. I went to see it in theatre with my Mother and it made a huge impression.
I really like that little anecdote Isabelle shared about Rossellini. Such a valuable lesson which doesn't only work in filmmaking but in other forms of art and literature as well.
Quel goût cinématographique! Quelle élégance! Et quelle grandeur Madame Huppert ❤❤❤🔥🔥🥰🥰
The more I know about her and watch her movies the more I love her as an individual, she's timeless, funny af, cool as no other and completely in her lane. And these instances where we see her in interviews that dont take her from her own element are precious, look at her, sis came back to do what she wanted lol which is take movies and talk a little bit what's on her mind. QUEEN.
The greatest living actress and i'd stand on Meryl Streep's coffee table and say that.
How wonderful that someone watching Criterion closet videos also know's the Steve Earle quote.
Her & Cate Blanchett I feel are GOATs
@@mikkommp
I share his affection for Townes Van Zandt!
@rics1883
It's like you're reading my muddy mind. That's identical to my thought when I added that comment.
Were you so lucky to see them TOGETHER in Genet's "The maids" (Les bonnes)?
Me, myself had could being swimming to Australia (from Italy) to watch this piece, when these two bitches did in Sidney, years ago...
She is truly a legend!! So glad she's back in the Closet!
Great actor with impeccable taste in movies.
I adore you and thank you for your expression, it is such a gift, just like Jeanne Moureau.
Isabelle was made for visiting the Criterion Closet. Her picks are perfect. I Knew Her Well is one of the most heartbreaking portraits of a young woman lost in the sauce of her society. And Wanda, and Nothing But a Man are beyond measure as must see films.
Thank you for reinforcing those titles…I immediately reserved a couple of them at the library, but I’ll get the ones you mentioned as well….
The art of filmography is the greatest thing in the world. I am moving in with my love in March and we’re turning our closet into our personal Criterion Closet. We just have a small physical media collection due to the economy, but it’s just been my dream to go to it, even if simulated. Thank you for these videos, and may film live on for centuries.
She is just magical.
Another pick for Saint Omer, taste! Could happily listen to a random trail of cinema thoughts from Huppert for a very long time
I've been unable to get this movie out of my mind ever since I watched it I would've loved to hear her thoughts
Like a fine wine.
I'll never, EVER forget the first time I saw Elle. An absolutely remarkable breath of fresh air! Piano Teacher as well, of course. Still have yet to see White Material or Time of The Wolf but hope to soon.
WANDA broke significant ground as one of the first American feature films directed by a woman to receive international acclaim, with Loden also starring as the passive drifter in Pennsylvania coal country. The film's vérité style and unflinching depiction of a woman voluntarily abandoning her children and drifting into crime was radical for its time, influencing later independent filmmakers and feminist cinema despite being largely forgotten until its rediscovery and restoration in the 2000s. Thanks Criterion for preserving this important work! 🎬
I’ve noticed how many actors who’ve done these either choose or mention Wanda. And a shout out from Ms. Huppert has just convinced me to finally watch!
La cérémonie is not only a masterpiece, it isTHE masterpiece of Claude Chabrol
Thank you, can’t wait to see it….
This woman is queen 👑
You forgot Wanda on your end list! She picked it first! She REALLY knows her stuff! Truly one of the greatest films ever made - a searing time capsule so powerful you can SMELL Barbara Loden's world off the screen! Huppert is the greatest!
It's lamentable that this was Loden's sole venture as a director. She showed a lot of sensitivity and insight in that capacity.
One of the worst films I have ever seen. And I'm not exaggerating.
@@yeahiagree1070 Yep.
I love Isabelle Huppert!
The. Best. Actress. Ever.
Isabelle is a treasure to The World!
The sequel I’ve been waiting for.
Love how she barely bothers with the titles, it was all about the experiences/ emotions she had with each choice.
Le Ceremonie is great. We need more Chabrol on Criterion BluRay. Le Boucher, Les Biches & Que La Bête Meure being amongst my favourites.
If Criterion put out Nada and Les Noces Rouges, that would be amazing. Criminally underrated within Chabrol's backcatalogue.
I just watched "Les Biches" for the first time a few days ago. Excellent film.
"Betty" is also great
@mainchannel1566 Yeah, he's got numerous. Another one with Huppert of his is Story Of Women & that's fantastic too. He hasn't made many I didn't like.
Great films indeed. l'Enfer is also top Chabrol
She is a gorgeous woman and an amazing actress with impeccable taste
i knew her well! Gosh how it avoids structure and we just spend time with the most beautiful woman on earth coming to find she’s lonely with such captivating scenes. she does anything and you’re just so invested
I enjoy your work. The character you play in Greta, is my personal favorite and the movie is awesome!!
Yes, yes, yes!!! The Undisputed Goddess!!!!
Huppert has such a compelling 'strong woman' energy about her. Incredible charisma.
Arguably the greatest living actress.
Indeed!
It’s incredible the things I learned from these 3 minutes.
Thank you for these incredible suggestions..!
Her & Cate Blanchett are greatest living actors
The ceremony🙏 A m@rx1st masterpiece 🤯
The most chilling performance in the Criterion closet ever.
Absolutely LOVE HER in “The Bedroom Window” !!
Isabelle Huppert: The Return
She mentioned Juliet of the Spirits last time and now she takes it
such a powerful presence. perfect hair and a chanel suit. a lot of huppert, elation.
When Emma Stone won her first Oscar instead of Huppert, I realized that Isabelle was just above all of that and Oscar didnt win HER.
The greatest actress of all time...
I really love Isabelle Huppert,The Pianist,Elle,Amour,Happy Ending,an underrated actress
Ceremony is GREAT!!!
Legend
Although she didn't explain her reasons for picking any of these, it's still one of the more refreshing closet picks because she's picked 2 movies there that I've never heard of in I Knew Her Well and Nothing But a Man (and I've seen a few thousand movies). A lot of the choices in these closet picks are a case of rinse and repeat with the same movies coming up time and again, so thank you Isabelle Huppert for highlighting something different.
Well that's it confirmed. I'm still in love. ❤ An icon
Isabelle your just wonderful and look fabulous, I'm an admire of your work and films.!. Love and Best for the Future.!. From Craig - London UK. Xx.
This beautiful woman is 71. Age has never been kinder to anyone!
Oh my! Thank you for choosing Pietrangeli! Seems to be a simple movie, but it is soooooo good
Lol, thought she was about to break the shelf there for a second! #awkward 🙄😅😂 Nice to see what grabs the attention of a French legend.
My favorite goddess in the film pantheon - she has perfect taste too of course
I Knew Her Well (1965) is indeed a masterpiece.
She is so very lovely!
The omission of Wanda in the credits is CRAZY!!!
she picked one of her own!
I love this woman, and now that she has picked Juliette Of The Spirits I love her more.
I love you SO MUCH Isabelle. ❤
Even if on the fence about one particular film Isabel selected you add it to your watchlist because it's Isabel.
kind of want to watch "La Ceremonie" again now
the reason I kept watching heaven's gate. and then realised it's a brilliant film too.
Queen!!!!
Love 💕 luv her!💙💚
She looks amazing
Isabelle read from the sleeve notes of my video copy for Wanda which she was promoting/encouraging to be released during a screening of Wanda, which she introduced at The Whtechaple Gallery, London. Wanda is a wonderful film, Roy Wilbrahan
Mein Gott. Die Frau hat dermassen Klasse.
she should be there every week, or with every new film she's in. an immortal.
Huppert deliberately seeking out “2 or 3 Things I Know About Her” might be my favourite 🤯 moment ever in the Criterion Closet series.
Back again I see, Lady Huppert... 💚
Nothing But A Man was Malcolm X's favorite movie!
je t'adore ma REINE 🎥❤🎥
I love this woman. I remember David Letterman tried to interview her once. It was very awkward, Letterman was out at sea with someone as awesome as her. No celebrity puff pieces for IH
Can we talk about how divinely gorgeous Ms Huppert is
Is Huppert in The Piano Teacher the greatest performance by an actor ever? Maybe. Something to think about.
great choices!
the queen of it all ❤
She is right about La Ceremonie. And about I Knew her Well too
❤❤j‘adore
LOVE 😘 HER from Assam, India 🧡
I LOVE YOU ISABELLE 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭❤❤❤❤
Amazing that she’s back! Which Ozu films are included in the collection she picked up?
Love the way she hums to herself while looking at the titles. Wanda by Barbara Loden should be be in the end credits - she chose it first.
She's looking for I ❤ Huckabee's, but it's not on blu-ray yet for some reason.
I realize the titles are listed at the end and there's also a closed caption option, but it would be kind of nice if the titles were subtly listed in the lower left corner as they were mentioned. Sometimes it's not totally clear what title they're saying.
Its The Return Of The King!
Release the Matt Johnson Criterion Closet Picks please.
Oh, I'm in heaven.
Long Live The Queen!
oh god i love her
QUEEN MOTHER HAS RETURNED
I really liked 'I Knew Her Well' too. Stefania Sandrelli is beautiful in it.
