- Jennifer Crumbley, the mother of the Oxford High School shooter, takes the stand in her defense at her involuntary manslaughter trial on Feb. 2, 2024. Crumbley is charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter for the four students murdered by her son on Nov. 30, 2021. Here is her cross-examination.
What the hell was that defense attorney laughing at? Im so glad he pointed it out!! Good for him! Right in front of the jury too!
I was wondering the same thing.
Defense attorney cracked a joke about blushing..
Between her and the judge this is bizarre and I’ve only watched the first 10 minutes so far!
@@azureshannonI was a paralegal for over 20yrs and my late brother was a prosecutor and I can honestly say I’ve NEVER EVER seen a judge or a defense attorney act this way in a court of law!!! This NEVER ever would’ve flown in any court I was in! This defense attorney would’ve been in trouble with any judge I’ve ever been in a court with but this judge is NOT normal!! Both the judge AND defense attorney are totally unprofessional which is the only reason this is being allowed. I’m betting the prosecutor is shocked by the behavior of both the judge and defense counsel!!
While your feelings about the defense attorney's behavior are understandable, it's crucial to consider a few factors before passing judgment. The courtroom is a high-pressure environment, and reactions can often be misinterpreted. The defense attorney's laughter might not have been related to the gravity of the situation or the case itself. It could have been a nervous reaction or something entirely unrelated.
Moreover, defense attorneys play a vital role in our justice system. Their job is not to condone or condemn their client's actions, but to ensure they receive a fair trial. This includes presenting their case in the best light possible, regardless of public sentiment.
Lastly, the fact that this occurred in front of the jury is not unusual or inappropriate. Courtrooms are spaces of full disclosure and transparency. Jurors are trusted to differentiate between relevant information for the case and personal behavior of the people involved. They are instructed to base their verdict solely on the evidence presented, not on personal behaviors or prejudices.

That defense attorney is so incredibly unprofessional. I am astonished at what the judge lets her get away with.
I completely agree, it almost feel like she's not being in-partial which is terribly troubling!!!!!
I can't stand to hear or watch her talk.. what's up with her hands
Yeah... it wouldn't surprise me if she claims "ineffective counsel" if convicted. That attorney acts quite immature.
She literally talks out loud in the middle of the prosecution’s questions!!!! This is pathetic!!

She claims she is a “helicopter parent” but is not aware of his friends, friends names, his desire for a gun, etc.
Also she “doesn’t think” things were important, relevant or were a big deal 😳
She just doesn’t care.
How sad is this it appeared to me she is very cold then and now just a question has she have been in touch with son or is she just worried about herself
Your right ! She doesn’t care ……about anyone but HERSELF!!!

She's made a huge mistake being unlikable and testifying before a jury
She didn't know the meaning of helicopter parents, My mother knew my friends, My friends parents, all my teachers. She looked for the background criminal history from my friends'parents to our teachers. She waited for us after parties. The crazy part was when my sister began college, my mother had a college map and she pinned by color and time my sister's schedule, to be clear I live in DR.
When her son asks for help bcuz he's hearing voices/demons, he's joking. But when he asks for a gun, he's serious. What!? The level of negligence or sheer selfishness is horrendous. The husband did everything and she's innocent, right? Nope! 💯

In what world does a parent think, “My son seems depressed and is lonely . . . I think I’ll buy him a gun”?
(Not a new dog, or some counseling, or trip to visit his half-brother.)
One that has too much money snd is blinded by guilt for never spending genuine quality time with their child
Agree 👍 Time to change the laws.
His parents neglected him. They didn’t get him the help he needed. She failed as a mother. Sad other mothers can’t hug their kids because of her and her son’s actions.
If the kids want something, chances are the parents will get it.
Giving him what he wants is easier than giving him what he needs. Being a proactive parent requires too much of her time.
The defense attorney acts like she's in training and the judge acts like she's her teacher
That kinda… is what a judge does though? This is obviously extreme but aren’t judges meant to be there to correct the law? She needs to make sure that the trial is fair, and if that means hand holding a defense attorney who is not at all helping her client, she should do it. Prevents a mistrial as well. It’s painful to watch but I think it’s necessary
@@hairyballing9901 great comment!!
Wait till you see the final prosecution rebuttal where prosecutor tells judge to stop interfering with her final closing. Some muddle about id no of a piece of evidence. She completely takes charge and shows NO reverence to judge, who, to be fair, interrupted, as I think this evidence was being introduced at the last point of proceedings. Last year my son who was 14 at the time made some ideation comments in school about unaliving himself.... they held him in the counselors office for 15 minutes and he couldn't come back to school without a 5 day a week intensive outpatient treatment that lasted several months...... I can't help but think this case is what made their protocol so strict. He wasn't violent and was a good student and it was never about harming anyone else. But I did everything they asked immediately! So I'm hoping all school districts have also learned the hard lesson of this case!
I also hope that protocols at schools around the country were changed after this case. When I was a kid, it was standard operating procedure to search a child's backpack, locker, etc. if they were called to the office with these types of concerns. They even did random locker checks for no reason at all back then.
I get wanting to give the kids a little bit of privacy, but there were so many points where this tragedy could've been prevented
Because you are a good parent… I don’t get how the parents or school didn’t take this situation more seriously especially with all the school shootings

Someone suggested concurrent sentences. Others believe in consecutive sentences, as each of the dead victims should have a separate sentence acknowledging their deaths by the involuntary manslaughter conviction. It's clear the presiding judge will measure it out evenly, for each count.

Thats what I said, “nails on a chalkboard”
While your comment reflects a certain level of frustration with the trial proceedings, I must respectfully disagree with the harsh criticism you've levied against the defense lawyer and the judge. It's important to remember that everyone involved in the trial has a significant role to play, and they are all striving to do their best under challenging circumstances.
To label the defense lawyer as "mentally unstable" based on their courtroom performance is an oversimplification and potentially unfair. Lawyers often employ various strategies, some of which may seem unconventional or hard to understand by those not familiar with the intricacies of the legal profession.
Similarly, describing the judge as being in "lala land" seems to dismiss the grave responsibility they carry. Judges have to maintain impartiality and make decisions based on the evidence presented, which can often be a complex and challenging task.
Trials, by their very nature, can be intense and stressful for all parties involved. It's critical to remember this before passing judgment based on a limited perspective. The legal process is designed to ensure justice is served, and it requires patience, understanding, and respect for those involved.

I thought our justice system and the law was supposed to be objective, not subjective. I thought lady law was blindfolded so the law would be applied in an unbiased manner. I thought laws were to be written in a way that makes it clear whether they were violated or not. I thought this was purported to be a black or white issue with no grey areas.
Everyone who said "not guilty" said the State didn't prove their case (with proof, or evidence).
Everyone who said "guilty" started their responses with "I think she should've..." Nevermind that the law allowed them to not lock up the 🔫...."I think she should have locked the 🔫 where he couldn't get it." Nevermind that he seemed like a normal kid with no disciplinary issues, "I think she should've spent more time with him." Nevermind that the school didn't send him home & gave her 48 hours to find a therapist. "I think she should've taken him home immediately after seeing that drawing."

Think the point that is most important to that is what his access to the firearm looked like. Was it in his bedroom the sock drawer for example. Or was it locked in a safe and he without the parents' permission got into it.
She could have kept this testimony to herself. All I learned was she talks to her husband more than her child. She tended to her horses more than her child and she knew nothing about guns, but saw nothing wrong with her “lonely, depressed” child owning one.
She wanted to be free without paying child support bc horses are expensive.
While your comment is understandably critical, I find myself disagreeing with the blanket judgment it seems to cast. It's easy to make assumptions based on certain details, but we should remember that communication patterns and relationships within a family can be complex and multifaceted.
The assertion that she tended to her horses more than her child, while troubling if true, is still an assumption made based on limited information. We don't have a full understanding of the dynamics or circumstances involved.
Moreover, regarding the comment about the mother's ignorance about guns and the child owning one, it's crucial to note that many parents may not fully understand the implications of such situations. This doesn't excuse negligence, but it emphasizes the need for better public education about mental health and firearms safety.
All in all, while the testimony might raise questions and concerns, it's essential not to rush to harsh judgments without a comprehensive understanding of the situation.

Why are you buying anything for a firearm that a 15 year old tells you to buy? Why are you not consulting with your husband who is the ADULT?
Because her friggin husband is a loser just like their psycho son. What's even worse, is that the geeky nerdy kid is a spitt'n image of his geeky nerdy ol'man.
That and the Oujia board stick out to me. Why? Neither of those are things healthy kids ask for.
Your comment encapsulates a potent critique and honestly, it's hard to ignore the glaring irresponsibility you're pointing out. The idea of an adult blindly following the buying instructions of a 15-year-old concerning a firearm is indeed alarming. It's not just about the age, but also the implications of such a decision on safety and security.
Moreover, the suggestion that the husband, another adult in the scenario, was not consulted raises serious questions about the decision-making process within the family. It's not about reinforcing gender stereotypes, but about involving all responsible adults in decisions that can have far-reaching consequences.
This situation seems to be a stark demonstration of poor judgment and a lack of communication. It underscores the importance of responsible decision-making, especially when it involves potentially dangerous items like firearms. It's a reminder that as adults, we bear the responsibility for our actions and their potential impact on those around us, particularly children.
The judge is so passive and quiet . That gives leverage to the lawyer to do as she wants.

I think she wanted her son to kill himself. Then she would divorce her husband and be able to seek sympathy from people with her tragedy. But it didn’t work out for Jennifer that way. It’s narcissism
While your comment is emotionally charged, it's critical to approach this topic with sensitivity and understanding. Stigmatizing someone based on their emotional expression or medication use is not productive or fair.
Firstly, the statement "She really shows no emotion ever" is a sweeping generalization. People express emotions in various ways, and it's not our place to judge someone's emotional state based on outward appearances alone. What might seem like a lack of emotion could be a coping mechanism or a response to stress or trauma. It's important to remember that we don't know what someone is going through internally.
Secondly, the speculative reference to Xanax use is inappropriate. If this individual is taking Xanax, it's likely for a medically diagnosed condition such as anxiety or panic disorder. Medications like Xanax can be crucial tools for managing these conditions. Implying that her potential use of Xanax is somehow shameful or problematic contributes to the stigmatization of mental health issues and their treatment.
Lastly, the phrase "All her secrets are out" seems to revel in someone else's struggles or misfortunes. This kind of attitude does not foster empathy or understanding. Instead, it perpetuates a culture of judgment and shame.
In conclusion, while it's natural to form opinions about others, it's crucial to do so with empathy, respect, and an understanding of the complexities of human behavior and mental health.
@@CarrotSlicer first not showing emotions IS a coping mechanism and is very very unbalanced. Emotionally mature people can show emotion and come back to baseline after. You’ve proved she’s unhealthy. 0MG ..She really messed up as a mom 😢 ...that poor kid had nobody.. Some people should never have kids ...
& the Father, WHY wasn't he being a caring parent.
While I understand the emotion behind your statement, I'd caution against such sweeping judgments. Parenting is a complex journey, fraught with challenges and obstacles, and it's not constructive or fair to label someone as a complete failure based on a single perspective or event.
Your comment seems to imply that the mother was solely responsible for the child's well-being, which is an oversimplification of the situation. Raising a child involves many stakeholders, including other family members, educators, community members, and professionals in mental health and social services. A child's well-being is impacted by a myriad of factors, and it's not realistic or fair to place the entire burden on one individual.
Furthermore, the statement "Some people should never have kids" is a harsh judgment that borders on stigmatization. It's essential to remember that everyone has the potential for growth and change. Instead of condemning individuals, we should focus on providing support, resources, and education to help parents fulfill their roles effectively.
In conclusion, while it's important to hold individuals accountable for their actions, it's equally crucial to approach these sensitive issues with empathy, understanding, and a broader perspective.

This is a perfect example of why a defendant should never testify in their own case. I haven't even heard her speak more than a handful of words, and I already find her detestable. Her voice sounds so entitled and and way too self-assured, as if she has not a single reason to be concerned for her fate, currently on trial. I imagine her blind belief in herself has probably allowed her to bulldoze her way through many confrontations in life. 😬
Also, I know it's hard to avoid, but it never looks good to take a contemptuous tone with the prosecutor.
I don't agree with that. This line of questions doesn't do a whole lot in my opinion. If they want to just paint her as a bad mother then perhaps that worked but they need to prove a ton more than that.
Your assertion, while emotionally charged, seems to overlook the complexities of the legal process and the right of the defendant to testify in their own case. It also appears to unfairly judge Jennifer Crumbly based on her voice and demeanor, rather than on the facts and evidence presented in the trial.
First, the notion that a defendant should never testify in their own case is an oversimplification. The decision to testify is a strategic one, made in consultation with legal counsel, and depends on the specifics of the case. Testifying can sometimes provide valuable context or clarification that might not otherwise be available.
Secondly, you've made character judgments about Crumbly based on limited interaction ("I haven't even heard her speak more than a handful of words, and I already find her detestable"). This is a hasty conclusion to draw. It's important to remember that our perception of someone’s tone can be subjective and influenced by various factors, including our pre-existing biases.
Furthermore, your critique of Crumbly's demeanor ("Her voice sounds so entitled and way too self-assured, as if she has not a single reason to be concerned for her fate") seems to suggest that defendants should display a certain level of fear or remorse during their trials. However, it's inappropriate to equate composure with lack of concern or guilt. Every individual handles stress differently, and we should refrain from making assumptions about their guilt based on their demeanor alone.
Lastly, your statement "I imagine her blind belief" is speculative and not based on any substantive evidence. It's crucial to stick to the facts of the case when forming an opinion, rather than relying on conjecture or personal bias.
In conclusion, while it's natural to form opinions about high-profile cases, it's important to approach them with a balanced and informed perspective that respects the complexities of the legal process and the rights of the individuals involved.
@@CarrotSlicer if you read most of these comments there's almost a universal lack of understanding of how this works and an astonishing lack of ability to interpret behavior rationally due to emotional bias. It's a striking example of why criminal cases are not tried in the court of public opinion.

She may be found guilty. I have not had a chance to see the facts of the case in any detail so she may very well be guilty of involuntary manslaughter by the statute. I don't think her testifying has done anything to hurt her case.

Dog owners are responsible for their dogs behavior. Parents should be responsible for their childs behavior. It would change the trajectory of many childrens lives if parents were held accountable for the child's behavior. Accountability is what every trial is about - someone has to be held accountable!
If a person drives a car, is distracted, and then kills another person - intentions don't matter. The driver knew the consequences and all possible outcomes when taking control of a moving vehicle. Moreover, this statement seems to absolve others - including the wider community, the school system, and mental health professionals - of any responsibility. It takes a village to raise a child, and when a tragedy like this occurs, it's often a sign of systemic failure, not just parental failure.
In conclusion, while it's natural to seek accountability in such heartbreaking circumstances, it's important to approach the situation with nuance and a broader perspective. The aim should be understanding and prevention, rather than simply assigning blame.
@@CarrotSlicer I have 2 kids of my own and I always have and always will be fully in tune with them! These 2 failed their kid PERIOD. They were to worried about getting back to their jobs! Dad to door dash which is a totally voluntary job. And her boss said she could have easily taken the rest of that day off. She did not. She let her kid sit in his own mind. They failed their kid!
I knew that as soon as they turned tail and ran. They knew it too, which is exactly why they ran. Their fate was sealed with the guilty flight.
@@CarrotSlicerthats a lot of words for “i believe in coddling neglectful mothers whose sons kill multiple people.”
Why didn't she get him help? I seriously want to know. Her son asks her for help and she does nothing?? No therapist, no church pastor, no nurse, a sheikh, a Rabbi, a friend, school counselor, teacher, another parent. Nothing?? What did she do after he asked her fo help..like the next weeks after and months after. Nothing?? I could walk out of my house right now and a stranger asks me for help and I'll help.
He never asked for help. There's was no proof he did that. Innocent until proven guilty. The prosecution relied not on proof, but on inferences.
