What a deep meaning! He does not sing about the love between man and woman but about the love for God.
And not the God who is taught in religion, he sings about,,
,, we Alevis call it Hak / hakikat (the truth), the divine energy that surrounds all life and matter and cannot be found outside of yourself

That's your interpretation of it. I see it as the love between a man and his beloved or even between humans and nature. The beauty of Persian poetry is that it does not have a singular meaning. To you, he's praising God, to me, however, he's praising and talking to his earthy beloved, and to someone else, he might be talking about his or her pet. We all love and believe in different things and beings.

It's always interesting to watch the reaction of non-Persian-speaking people to Persian (classical) music. My non-Persian speaking partner hates it when I listen to such music because she believes it to be sad music due to seeing me cry, however, what she doesn't realise is that they're tears of joy and happiness. We Persians cry when we hear the poems of our poets being sung by masters of Persian classical music. It brings back memories of the home which some of us left decades ago. It reminds us that no matter who rules the country, we would never forget our land and our true culture and always remain proud to be Persians.

This is about divine love. Rumi -- mystic --- is describing the stages of his purification until he becomes worthy of the source of all love (in his view God).
Rumi -- Molana Jalal-al-Din Balkhi (Rumi) -- was a renowned scholar of his time. Having everything one seeks in earthy life, he was not satisfied and seek the truth. He then became acquainted with a Sufi called -- Shams Tabrizi -- who teaches him to drop fame, praise of others, and materialistic life and purify himself.
When you hear "I was like Mercury sitting in circles to gain more knowledge and then he says that he realized knowledge alone can not guide him to his beloved, hence he broke his pen". This refers to knowledge that might bring about pride, arrogance, and narcissism that is a veil in front of one's eye to not see the divine. It is very difficult to translate these poems to another language; they are sound so good and have deep meaning in Persian. The English Subtitle is an honest attempt but it is more like a literal translation that does not convey the deep meaning of this poem.
