  • Energy systems in a Permaculture design are small scale and decentralized, using renewable sources. This video gives a very brief glance at types of renewable energy systems commonly employed in Permaculture. Oregon State University Free Permaculture Course (open.oregonstat...)

I have been enjoying your permaculture videos, I have wind and solar for energy, and a 10,000 gallon rain harvesting system with a 12v pumping system. I'm working on a raised bed garden that will irrigate itself using solar and rain 💧 water. My goal for now is to be 80% sustainable.

    independence through self reliance

There's no such thing as either one of these. Not really for humans anyway. We are extremely interdependent in our youngest days, our childhoods, adolescences, and even as young adults, but also in our oldest years. There's only really a few years where a human is independent and self-reliant. Even then we have been influenced by our bonds with others in extremely beneficial ways.
      It's a whole dialectic.

Nuclear is a necessity if cities are to continue to function. Renewables will not cut it.

Yeah, lets add another heavily polluting solution for future generations to deal with.

@@SJ-xg3rv It's not heavily polluting. Stop being so ignorant, go and educate yourself. If you want to help people and the planet stop perpetuating ignorance and lies.

Vertical axis windmills are better for sites with less than desirable wind conditions and siting.

Thank you for mentioning this, I hadn't heard of these before.

They are more durable and practical for most at home use...

@@b_uppy For now this isn't true, the turbine motor sits in the bottom of the turbine, this creates a problem with the bearings especially in tropical environments, they are getting a lot better, but they still need work to become more mainstream, I run a 48v 1000w turbine, it ran a refrigerator all night with 4 RV 12v batteries in series , The turbine is on top of my house on a retractable turbine tower I designed to bring the turbine down during a bad storm or hurricane, the tower is 25' lol.

Take it you are talking about a horizontal axis windmill being vulnerable... Not sure you'd want to hassle with servicing a mechanism at the top of a windmill much, even if its motor location was improved. Believe there are wind-sheer stresses involved, too.
Vertical axis ones can be more attractive, and can look like art installations rather than just power generators. That vertical axis windmills already fit the need is enough...

@@b_uppy I was checking them out when I was looking for a wind generator, I love the way they look, I might just get one to mess around with it.

I've been watching a lot of your videos and been very interested in the application of permaculture principles. This video has given me cause to question just how much of the entire thing is backed by actual data and practice. I have no qualms about using wind, solar, hydro etc. In fact, I very much want to. But solar and wind aren't very efficient, specially when you factor in the cost, and the actual carbon cost of making and transporting solar panels is far from "green"
