as much as the upcoming nicktoons defined nick, this and pete and pete are just as important to nick's legacy. 1991 was a hell of a year for this channel.
I wish "Welcome Freshman" was more well remembered. I know I loved it as a kid, but I don't remember it at all and it's not available like the more popular stuff is now.

1991 was a great year for all of American culture as a whole.
I know I loved Pete and Pete but I don't really remember it lol I remember an episode of someone getting food poisoning and an episode that had something to do with Pete digging underground...for some reason lol
This was before they started paying Dan Schneider in child sex slaves.
I was that target audience... a 12 year-old preteen girl, stuck between being a tomboy and the pressures of being more "girly." And here comes Clarissa. Clarissa was somewhat girly, but her best friend was a guy. She was fashionable, but she also played and made computer games. She wasn't any sort of stereotype; she seemed like a real person. She had an offbeat sense of humor and the same concerns I did. It was such a relatable series for me, and probably the first female led show I really enjoyed. I'm glad it was as well made as it was so it could pave the way for other portrayals of fun, interesting and appealing young ladies. Thank you for being awesome, Clarissa.

I was into karate, legos, video games, and climbing trees: very "boy" interests. Except I people thought it was "cute" a girl "wanted to be a martial artist". So I cut my hair, worked out, and people assumed I was a boy. I was born intersex (XXX Chromosomes), making me taller than normal. I was always skinny so it was easy.
Watching her was halfway like looking at a person I wanted to be, but didn't let myself accept because I was busy trying to "prove" myself as a martial artist, which to me meant "no girly things". I came to the video to see if I can reclaim anything of myself I left behind then.
For first female lead show you liked, I wonder if we can count "Eureka's Secret Castle" ;) That would be mine. My favorite movie as a kid was "black belt angels", you may like it!
@@AmethystSpeaks My dad was a bit of a tech head, so we were early adapters when it came to computers and the internet. My sister and I couldn't have a Nintendo, but my parents let us get games for our PC so we'd learn how to use one. They were right, darn it... my sister and I are both in tech heavy careers. Funnily enough, I got diagnosed with PCOS as a teenager, which did mess with my head a bit. Nothing like being an 18 year-old girl who can grow a beard to create angst. :)
Also by coincidence with your story, I got into tai chi (the actual martial art version, not the new age-y "wave hands for health" version) in my early 20's and actively practiced for around 15 years. Still do it at home routinely to keep my joints good in my middle age. I'll have to check out Black Belt Angels... that sounds neat!

One-hundred episodes of this amazing series is no small feat
This show was my first introduction to Keith Haring's work. The shirts with his art that Clarissa would wear and the prints in her room would immediately stand out in a costume and set design that was already really colorful. I didn't know who he was at the time of course, it wasnt until years later when a local museum had a Haring exhibit when everything would click together.
The Keith Haring aesthetics define 90s fashion especially some animated shorts on Sesame Street beginning in the 24th season. I just heard that Keith Haring died of AIDS just seven months before The unaired Clarissa pilot was filmed.
I'm a guy, and I wanted a Haring T-shirt back then. I didn't know where to get one.
Keith Harring would die from AIDS in 1990. If he waited a year longer at least to see Clarissa Explains It All, he would have been very proud.
I feel bad that Nerene Virgin died. She was one of the original people that defined Nickelodeon during its early years.
Makes you wonder how many more from the early days of Nickelodeon (a.k.a. The Silver Ball Era) do we have to lose before they finally get their way past due recognition that we use latter day stars like Melissa Joan Hart to take their place?

Not because I'm eager for it -- though i am -- but because hopefully, you'll finally start drawing in the viewing audience your work, talent and dedication really deserve. This project has been so enjoyable from the start, learning about shows from before my time has been a joy, and I'm excited to see your takes on the ones i do remember.

Laybourne was right about boys' interest in the show. I was an 8 year old boy when this started up, and it was one of my favorite shows. Social stigmas and gender pressures were still very pervasive, so it did still feel like a "girl show" (this assessment having nothing to do with the show itself, of course), but I think it being part of the SNICK lineup gave me (and other young boys) the permission structure to enjoy it without those toxic thoughts getting in the way.
It was definitely a better show than the similar Blossom, which I found boring as hell back then and now.
This video exceeded all expectations. I’m always amazed at how you can really get into the weeds and give us insight into all aspects of a show. Bravo and best of luck with the apartment hunt.

Mitchell Kriegman was also responsible for The Book of Pooh which has a unique puppet style as well as a similar humor to Bear in the big blue house. The show even has fourth wall breaks, with the characters having a complete interaction with the narrator. So you could say it’s an amalgam of Clarissa, Bear, and of course Winnie the Pooh.

This was one of my absolute favorite shows to watch when I was little. Probably my first “sitcom” that I was not only able to comprehend the words, but understand as well. Like my introduction into sitcom tropes and how sitcoms were meant to be a fun escape? It started right here.
As a Nick at Nite kid, I always saw parallels between Clarissa Explains It All and The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis in how they broke the fourth wall, and I feel like I liked them both for similar reasons, although I haven't watched either for decades. I also wonder if Larry Wilmore wasn't at least a little influenced by Clarissa when he created The Bernie Mac Show, another (excellent) fourth-wall breaking sitcom that also made use of on-screen graphics.
This is one of those shows I’ve never watched but knew of through cultural osmosis. The fact it’s one of Nick’s keystones is obvious and I’m happy to see that being reflected here. And here’s hoping that hunt for a new place to stay goes well. Moving is a pain but I know that folks will be here to enjoy your stuff while we wait for the next episode.

Haven't seen the show (though the theme song, like a lot of Nickelodeon theme songs, is one you only need to hear at least twice and then it will be lodged in your head forever), but congratulations on 100 episodes! It's great to have a series dive deep into all the shows that aired on this channel, from the heavy hitters to the ones most may have forgotten about, and the amount of research that gos into each episode is truly appreciated. I never thought I'd be fascinated to learn more about shows I previously had little to no knowledge of.
(Also, that song where Clarissa's listing things she likes and doesn't like low-key slaps. Damn my love of '90s alt-rock!)

Clarissa was a pioneering and unique series for its time. Those were the golden years of Nickelodeon. The first female protagonist and also the content of the series, addressed very interesting topics, it was a genius for the time.
I'm from '95 and I would have liked to have enjoyed the series in its splendor, but I had the pleasure of seeing it on Nick at Nite and I loved it. Clarissa's style, in fact I dare to wear those clothes today at 29 years old. It is simply iconic, it marked a before and after. The creator did a good job, the choice of the cast is very successful, Melissa is the ideal actress for the role, then Elizabeth Hess, I really liked that mother who is worried about her children and at the same time a companion. This series really is a gem.❤❤❤ Greetings from Argentina 🇦🇷

I always figured the "talk to the camera" thing was 100% pulled from Ferris Bueller, but looks like Kriegman was doing that stuff in short films years before. Interesting!

Myself being the exact same age as Melissa Joan Hart , I used to watch Clarissa Explians It All faithfully. That being said, I was definitely one of many boy viewers watching the show. She was definitely a cutie and still looks really good today. This show takes me back to a much simpler and happier time in my life. No major worries or responsibilities of being an adult. It was all about being a young teen and exploring life while having fun. I still go back and watch the show on Paramount Plus from time to time and I also watch Melissa's podcast on TH-cam. She's a very talented woman and she has definitely accomplished a lot in her career. What a phenomenal job on breaking down how the show was first conceived all the way up until the final episode. 👍🏽 This was a very informative video. 😊

I love how you mentioned how many guys liked this show. I didn't have any friends with cable back then who were into Nick. I was fortunate to get cable all the way back in '86, so I saw MTV when it was still relatively new, and dedicated to showing current music. Melissa's four years older than me, but I grew up with her via this and Sabrina. SNICK was a wonderful thing for the kid who watched way too much TV. It was the very beginning of all the stuff that followed like All That, and I'm just happy to have seen Nick when YCDTOTV was in heavy rotation, Pete & Pete were weird shorts, and cable (even Nick) was still a bit edgy.
I miss that “1 second of every episode” video you had, but I still like the history you share.
I feel like I'm pretty immune to nostalgia these days. Old blocks of commercials are readily available on TH-cam, every video game I grew up with is easily playable, practically any show I watched as a kid is findable in one way or another, its all so easy to revisit.
But for some reason, whenever you hit on a show that meant something to me as a kid (this was one of those times) - taking the time to go deep, and to care, I can feel tears welling up in the back of my eyes. Is that weird?

In the segment where you were listing off the show’s influences like Family Ties and Punky Brewster, I was almost expecting Ferris Bueller’s Day Off to be one of them. I thought that was what inspired the talking to the audience segments accompanied with on-screen text, but I guess Kriegman must have thought of that before Bueller.
I'm glad I wasn't imagining the influence of those shows.
Its so weird to me, seeing all of the dna of the shows I grew up on in this video, having never actually watched the show. I'm the very tail end of Millennial, and watched a lot of drake and josh, which you can see in the set design here, ned's declassified, which you touched on, the like. Its also always good to see a knick knacks without too much "the past was a mistake.".
I also wanted to say congrats on 100 episodes. When you started this series was when i finally subbed to the patreaon, and as money has grown tight, its the only contribution I make. It is always a pleasure to see it in my feed, and your work is always so well researched and put together. Can't wait to see where the 90's takes us.

I truly don't think enough people talk about how groundbreaking Clarissa Explains It All was. To have a teenage girl leading a sitcom on a network that at the time didn't take itself seriously. So groundbreaking that it helped pave the way for other teenage female-led shows that would eventually come down the line. Some hold up well, while others, the less said about them, the better (cough cough Dan Schneider). Without Clarissa, there would be no Amanda Show, Zoey 101, iCarly, Victorious, or even the ones from rival Disney Channel, like Lizzie McGuire, That's So Raven, Hannah Montana, Wizards of Waverly Place, & Jessie, to name a few. Clarissa Darling was arguably the best character ever on a Nickelodeon show. She was nothing like the typical characters we saw on TV before, quirky with a sense of style, but managed to explain things while breaking the fourth wall & make them interesting. Melissa Joan Hart played her so well that we all wanted to be best friends with her. It's no wonder why MJH went on to do bigger & better things after her time on Nick came to an end, at least she didn't really go crazy like most of her contemporaries. Same thing goes to Kenan Thompson. She still looks gorgeous even though she's now approaching 50. If I ever had the chance to meet her, I wanted to give her a hug & thank her for making our childhoods TOTALLY happy. 😊 Well done & congrats on 100 episodes, you deserve it! 👍🏻

Suzanne Collins' last _Clarissa_ episode contains one of the show's most memorable scenes for me, in which Clarissa shows the viewer two different Bouncy Balls commercials - a classy health-conscious ad from her mother, and a silly cartoon from Clarissa.
This was one of my top favorite shows as a kid! "Not like the other girls" is a controversial statement these days but for the time period that basically WAS Clarissa and it worked because she didn't say it. She just did her own thing and it was awesome.
Nickelodeon has always has had shows that defined them. For example in the Silver ball Era, you can't do that on Television, the first splat Era Double Dare, then Clarissa and the Nicktoons, and so on. Also even though I was quite young for the demo, when it premiered, I loved Clarissa Explains it all. Also as for Melissa Joan Hart, even after that she's been wonderful in Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and along with her Sister Emily voicing the Sabrina animated series.
I wanna mention some more things about Mitchell Kriegman. After Clarissa ended, Mitchell went to work for The Jim Henson Company besides creating Bear, he also co wrote the Sesame Street film The Adventures of Elmo In Grouchland. And he also wrote this very unknown Muppet Christmas special in 1995 called Mr Willoughby’s Christmas Tree with Robert Downey Jr which is also known to be the last project Sesame Street writer, director and producer Jon Stone worked on before he passed away in 1997. And I know Mitchell also worked on another Henson show at the time The Wubbulous World of Dr Seuss. Mitchell later went on to do The Book of Pooh for Playhouse Disney and It’s A Big Big World for PBS Kids. One other fun fact that I learned about Kriegman that he actually did audition to write for Sesame Street before he went to Nickelodeon but the head writer of Sesame, Norman Stiles ended up not hiring him
Still deeply disturbing to me that Clarissa grew up and became Ferguson.
Or at least endorsed his real-life equivalent for president. She seems to be swinging back a bit in the Trump era, though settling for libertarian isn't great either.

Also, when you started describing this show, I instantly thought of The Amanda Show. Studio set, spunky teen girl host, use of animated graphics (mainly for the Penelope segments, iirc). I think that’s the best thing I could think of before you brought up Ned’s Declassified- which really does feel like a spiritual successor to Clarissa. It did basically everything the same except with a new setting and no laugh tracks.

Finally! I can't tell you how much I loved this show as a kid, especially the aesthetic look and feel to it. It was a very creative show that broke away from the more typical sitcom route that I found appealing. I even tried to copy her bedroom as closely as possible lol

this was definitely the first sit-com that I watched really carefully, paying attention to the details for the sets and the layout of the house if it were real. I think Clarissa's room was also envious for a 90's kid - I remember thinking "geez I only have a little 10x10 foot bedroom, why can't it be cool like her!"
I loved watching Clarissa Explains it All! It felt like a life I wish I had, and I had a crush on Sam!
Damn, I found out about nick knacks from the nick at nite episode a few years back, and have watched the videos on and off since. I just caught up with the Macy's special, and now it's the 100th episode! Congrats, and hope for 100 more to come.

I know i watched Salute Your Shorts and similar at the time, and i was also hyped for those episodes, but now we're really coming into 'my' era. very hyped. also just adored Clarissa; a good show to 'begin' on.

Cheers to 100 episodes! Usually your retrospectives are enough to scratch the itch of nostalgia these shows create, but I decided to watch a few episodes on Paramount+ and this show has aged pretty well (save for the criticisms pointed out here).

Sabrina had the same lax laugh track, at least early on. I noted it didn't feel as notable as other shows, guess that's just Melisa's thing. Speaking of, that show later had Sabrina becoming an adult and joining the work force in the last couple seasons...so they got to the Carisa Now thing with a different Mellisa Joan Hart character at least lol.
This was before my time so I haven't much from it but seems to be up my alley, will check it out someday.

In the entertainment world, we often address actors by their character names. The gummy bear was one of Michelle Trachtenberg's later roles long after her Nickelodeon experiences.
As much as I am a guy saying this, when it comes to the quirky tween/teen girl stumbling around finding the meaning of their existence, I greatly prefer Disney's Pepper Ann. There's just something about how the character goes through major anxiety and messing things up by overthinking that's very relatable, regardless of gender. Plus, it gave us the immortal line "Peppy, do you want breasts?" Anyway, the only thing I'd say about Clarissa is that I don't think I ever really liked the dweeby brother/twerpy sister that the main/more popular sibling gets annoyed by trope. That's why appreciate the hell out of the Belcher kids in Bob's Burgers. They're all a special kind of quirky, but they never use it to antagonize each other. Rarely are they that annoyed by them, and there's a level of empathy, "Belchers womb to the tomb" solidarity. I wish I could see more of that in shows about families than that "Icky sibling" cliche.

I really wish Pepper Ann did end up being a Nick show (it was a pilot at Nick before it went to Disney), just so that Greg could do a video on it lol
FINALLY! A memorable Nick show for the 100th Nick Knacks episode!
Major ups on 100 episodes Mr. Pop. This is the most interesting and best show on all of TH-cam.
An absolute fave. In the early 90s, I very much embraced being "weird" as a part of my identity, but I quickly found that weirdness can be isolating. Thankfully, Clarissa showed me that it was still possible to be cool while being weird and true to yourself. She was the kind of person I wish could be or at least have as a friend. It hurts a little, though, that Hart became a bit of a Ferguson later in life (though not nearly as aggressively as Kevin Sorbo).
Don’t forget, Carissa is also a witch as well later in the 1990s

Man, I loved watching this show growing up! The graphics used on the show were very unique and Clarissa was very relatable. So much to love about it, it’s hard to put it all here. One thing I will always remember is that they used the word “Hell” in one of the episodes and I was shocked to see it used in a kids show. Good stuff!

It's weird how that theme song and the old SNICK commercials make me so sickly nostalgic for a time where I was being actively abused. That escapism just stuck in my head stronger than I thought, I guess.

the scrapped followup reminds me of The Middle's scrapped spinoff where it would have focused on Sue's life in the city.
I can’t help but think the spin-off that didn’t get picked up inspired Pamela Eells O’Connell along with her work on Charles In Charge and The Nanny to create Jessie!

Episode 100 is also the first episode to feature a show I remember debuting. Nick Knacks has finally caught up to my childhood
this was always the hip iteration of the 90s scribble art bright popping colors style, with saved by the bell feeling like it was written by 90 year old men trying to be cool and blossom feeling extremely very special episode heavy
100 episodes! And hopefully a big fat algo boost! I liked this show a lot watching re-runs and the like as a kid, it had a mass-audience appeal so both boys and girls could laugh at it.
