I'm going to be that guy... I think he said its Galena (lead(II) sulphide), not Germanium. Having said that, "that rock" would still work in a crystal radio, as would a bunch of other mineral crystals. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galena vs en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Germanium
That's a neat radio. Since I got into the car business as a kid in about 1995, NAPA has really fallen off. They are my last choice for parts anymore, took me a long time to learn that lesson.
Sir, Your videos are inspiring, and I really appreciate your low tech techniques like probing a cap with another to see if they are open. I always learn something. My first eBay radio arrives today and I hope to restore it. Thanks for a great new way to waste money and time, but seriously thanks for your videos. Charlie in Virginia
Just a note, I like the radio videos more then the TV anyhow, that's why I keep coming back to your video collection, when there is nothing new, there are a lot of radio videos I can go back to and re-watch thanks a million for taking the time out of your life and making these great entertaining videos for us, to top it off, it seems I always learn something even when watching a video for the 2nd or even 5th time.
Thanks shango...you're better than any professor I had in engineering classes 4 decades ago...you are the reason I had the courage to restore old electronics in my family's collection...if you want to see your student visit me
I hope you can find more novelty radios, they’re so cool. I’ve got a ‘29 Lincoln model car radio from the late 70s. The sound was always distorted and a couple of years ago the local oscillator died. While I was trying to get it to oscillate again, I found a Rolls Royce from the same series (there were three) with missing parts and poor finish at a local thrift store. I swapped the radio into the Lincoln and have it on my bookshelf. The Rolls is in a drawer with the Lincolns radio, which still won’t oscillate.
next time you get one of those calls you need to address yourself Idi Amin style. "His Excellency, President for Life, Field Marshal Al Hadji Doctor Shango, VC, DSO, MC, Lord of All the Beasts of the Earth and Fishes of the Seas, Conqueror of solid state radios, holder of rare earth elements, Galena in particular."
Start with an older solid state AM radio that uses a glass diode detector (germanium) Unsolder and remove the original diode, leaving two open points on the circuit board. Solder separate long wires with clips or probes into the circuit where the diode was connected.. The free ends of the probes can then be used as contact points by touching on the mineral sample. Try different metals on the probe tips, that might cause differences in rectification.
"I should make a radio out of this." Well, as kids we used to make radios using a galena cat whisker detector. With a tuning coil hand wound around a cardboard core from a toilet paper roll. I wonder if Shango is up to the challenge.
from wikipedia: Galena is a semiconductor with a small band gap of about 0.4 eV, which found use in early wireless communication systems. It was used as the crystal in crystal radio receivers, in which it was used as a point-contact diode capable of rectifying alternating current to detect the radio signals. The galena crystal was used with a sharp wire, known as a "cat's whisker" in contact with it.
18:15 "... self asphyxiate, I think everyone should just put a plastic bag over their head..." “I thought,” he said, “that if the world was going to end we were meant to lie down or put a paper bag over our head or something.” “If you like, yes,” said Ford. “That’s what they told us in the army,” said the man, and his eyes began the long trek back down to his whisky. “Will that help?” asked the barman. “No,” said Ford and gave him a friendly smile.” ― Douglas Adams, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
TheEncyclopediaofPopCulture 2 that was to funny Just re-watched it and saw that part where the person said that you sound more Indian than I do. Specially funny when he stuck the radio up to the speaker on the phone and stuck the led rock on there
Galena--a NATURAL semiconductor. These Galena "crystals" were found in very old crystal sets-had one when I was a kid.Didn't need power.Used with a headphone. Also remember you could wind the coil for a crystal set on a Quaker Oats cardboard "can" they came in.
Good to see the galena at home than lefted in the mines ,you have stepped forward Shango006 ,please go to the next level .73's i always enjoy ur video's
Well done Sir, You win again! The Plastic bag over the head suggestion is not helpful but a Galena Cat's Whisker Radio would be quick, easy and educational.
I keep hearing that governor Neukem has things closed down still. I hope things open up soon out there. Love the design of this radio. too bad its so chinsy on the inside.
nice beast, i have a few novelty radios - a few 'paint tins', a wd40 can, an 'alan titchmarsh garden radio', a couple of 'cotton traders' ones, and some others i cant remember what they are! most work well for what they are especially the larger cotton traders one ,made to look like a 'vintage' radio...
My dad owned a Phillips 66 gas station, well as he said service station,, throughout the 1970’s,,, he closed up in 1980, and me and my brother found a case of radios like this one ,, except they were cb band,,,, and labeled with the Phillips branding...they were very cool,,, and I wish we hadn’t of given away or just destroyed them,,, we had about thirty of them...in the 80’s they worked fine...pop in a 9volt and listen to the static.... lol
i guess there is one thing good about californy, shango gets more AM stations than we have FM. there are 0 RAP staions, 1 pop sation, 2 rock stations, 3 country stations, 1 or two oldies stations, and i think 4 chrichy stations but one of them shuts off. and National Democrat Radio also known as NPR. AM is hard to pick up but its mostly sports.
If I'm not mistaken, my neighbors son has a transistor radio that is in the shape of a gas pump that was sold by Gulf gas stations in the early 60s. I have to ask him the next time I see him if he still has it, how he got it and if it still works.
I do that with those scam callers also.... mess with them. LOL Put the phone in front of a speaker or run a tool. Whatever they disturb me of doing. Waste their time too.... LOL. My stepdad worked for NAPA 38 years, he'd love that radio.
Back when I was in grade school in the 70's, I had a plastic snoopy Peanuts character transistor radio. I wonder how many different novelty radios were actually made.
I have a Pan Am 747 airplane AM radio, and a cabin cruiser AM radio. Both are from the 1970s. I think that is when the novelty radios were the most common. I know there are also Polaroid "film" radios, but I don't have one.
Yep, especially when filling up with dust and sand... It seems they put some cloth between the holes and the speaker, nice touch, it probably catches sand and other debris, but won't stop dust. The best is when you leave it outside and fills up with rainwater.
I have seen a lot of portable radios in my lifetime. As a kid, I hated when they didn't work. Some of these radios looked like they could tune something from outer space.
Would be funny to have a 12Vto 9V convertor so you can run this radio from a REAL NAPA car battery!Wonder how long it would play?It is a nice little radio.Never seen one of these. The board and speaker back in the case does make it sound better.
You could try making a crystal radio out of that germanium rock
Don't give him ideas,he's got a lot on his plate. That is a good suggestion however!
I'm going to be that guy...
I think he said its Galena (lead(II) sulphide), not Germanium.

This is why you never keep your radio in your battery when storing for extended periods.
Nice :)
That’s a good one that had me laughing
I had to read that twice before I got it. :-)
do you know who shango is?
That's a neat radio. Since I got into the car business as a kid in about 1995, NAPA has really fallen off. They are my last choice for parts anymore, took me a long time to learn that lesson.
It's clearly low on electrolyte.
Just top it up.
Good one.
Thanks for all the extra content you’ve been posting, really helped keep me sane!

We understand. Once a week will have to do till you get things running again. Thanks for all of your efforts and take care,
I keep coming back to this video because I love how he messes with spam/scammer phone calls while doing videos. I wish he still did this.
Thanks shango...you're better than any professor I had in engineering classes 4 decades ago...you are the reason I had the courage to restore old electronics in my family's collection...if you want to see your student visit me
bandersentv! Good recommendation, been watching him for years.

Yeah people used to use galena to make crystal radios if I remember correctly
Yessir

I/m glad to hear you are going back to repairing radios. Don’t care about repairing TVs
Start with an older solid state AM radio that uses a glass diode detector (germanium)
Unsolder and remove the original diode, leaving two open points on the circuit board.
Solder separate long wires with clips or probes into the circuit where the diode was connected..

I was thinking the same exact thing. Love these recent vids. Not that the old ones are worse, these are all great.
Thanks for keeping the video coming I alway enjoy watching thanks. Regards Chris
That set is pretty cool. Napa is everywhere around here. We use them a lot.
my world is once again spinning in greased grooves. thank you!
A radio that looks like a car battery, that's beautiful.
It’s so cute how it looks like a little car battery. LOL 🥰
Awesomeness.... Loved the exchange with a call center... Too cool

how cool would it have been if they put the IF cans under those 6 bumps on the top so you could align it while it was assembled
Thank you for the extra videos Shango!
I love it when Shango torments telemarketers. So satisfying.
i enjoyed getting a 1st hand look at this cool radio
Came for the radio repair, stayed for the geology lesson

Best parts of the video when shango gets a phone call he doesn’t want😹 laugh so hard I started tearing up
I know. Too funny, goodness knows what the call centre guy was hearing in his headphone lol
Darchnarzbl warnarchnarzbl 😆
Junior BCM yes I agree to funny😹😂🤣
Junior BCM makes you wonder what language that is. It sounds German 😂
TheEncyclopediaofPopCulture 2 that was to funny Just re-watched it and saw that part where the person said that you sound more Indian than I do. Specially funny when he stuck the radio up to the speaker on the phone and stuck the led rock on there
Looking forward to the return of the tv videos 👍
Make a radio whit that rock that would be very interesting! Great video nice little radio
Fascinating rock. Making a Galina radio will truly rock! When your done you can eat your radio rock with your radio active mask on. ;-)

Had to listen to a rap song ad before I got here, I don't think I`ll ever be the same momma.
NAPA: never any parts available
yup
I was told that it meant "Not All Parts Awful"
OH MY Gosh! Ha ha ha, Good call.
Good!
NAPA= Not Another Part Again
Well done Sir, You win again! The Plastic bag over the head suggestion is not helpful but a Galena Cat's Whisker Radio would be quick, easy and educational.
Those are cool little novelty radios, I have the Western Auto one.
I love that word vintage like old people are vintage
I love it when you mess with scammers.
If you make a radio out of that rock Gilligan is just going to come along and screw it all up so why bother?
I keep hearing that governor Neukem has things closed down still. I hope things open up soon out there. Love the design of this radio. too bad its so chinsy on the inside.
Careful... I got attacked for commenting about the Dems wanting the lockdown to be prolonged on Shango's last video.
Yes, indeed....there are some things that Deoxit and Capacitors won't fix. However, they fixed this.
Thank you for all the extra videos, it's appreciated :-D
A novel radio but a softer cone speaker might make it less squarky.
I love novelty radios,It plays great.
nice beast, i have a few novelty radios - a few 'paint tins', a wd40 can, an 'alan titchmarsh garden radio', a couple of 'cotton traders' ones, and some others i cant remember what they are! most work well for what they are especially the larger cotton traders one ,made to look like a 'vintage' radio...
No shingle I didn't know you could fix the radio with the rock but you just did it
Cant wait for the debate eols
I believe I have seen one of those..... Another novelty radio I used to see was a WD-40 can radio.
That's a cool radio .....awesome work as always
If you did make a radio with the Galena, would you be able to get anything but KNX with it?
It would only get rock stations...
The only music it gets is “Led” Zeppelin.
Or "Iron" Butterfly.
Call center call makes you pretty f'n cool.
I used to have one of those kind of radios when I was little
I have one of those car battery radios. I collect novelty am radios. Some work great and some are meh..
That is a cool radio, I feel like I’ve seen one before but it was Diehard brand for Sears.
does your local NAPA guy have air plane parts? LOL
Speaking of which, did you ever listen to fat Albert's car?
It's on spotify
You'll laugh your ass off!
Love your videos , keep up the good work
Love the prank calls!
My dad owned a Phillips 66 gas station, well as he said service station,, throughout the 1970’s,,, he closed up in 1980, and me and my brother found a case of radios like this one ,, except they were cb band,,,, and labeled with the Phillips branding...they were very cool,,, and I wish we hadn’t of given away or just destroyed them,,, we had about thirty of them...in the 80’s they worked fine...pop in a 9volt and listen to the static.... lol

AM is hard to pick up but its mostly sports.
Where do you live where there isn’t a rap station? Sounds too good to be true!
We have three Hip Hop stations receivable on AM here!!
620, 1080, 1400
"This battery has good selectivity."
Leave it to Shango !!
Napa always had the best parts.. all of it good. Not like other crap parts stores. Napa was always a tad more expensive but its real stuff.
Yes, attach leads to the ore and use it to replace a burnt out resistor.
“Irvine, India” 😂
H1B visas for people doing the phone-scamming jobs that Americans just won't do.
Great video 👍
Oh that call was pure gold :D
I wanna get a piece of that stone, thats amazing. Try building a radio using only that ore, on which parts you could use it instead of.
All we can do is hope most AM radio listeners do this. Go out! Don't wear a mask! Breathe deep! Yess, yesss, breathe deeply!!
12:31 ✝️ I recognised that Christian song; is he worthy? - Chris Tomlin, a new song in our collection that we have practiced and sung at Church. 🇬🇧
Would be interesting to try that rock with a crystal radio
Scam caller: "You sound more Indian then I do sir."
Shango066: "Yes, that's correct."
Oh my god, that gave me a good laugh.
If I'm not mistaken, my neighbors son has a transistor radio that is in the shape of a gas pump that was sold by Gulf gas stations in the early 60s. I have to ask him the next time I see him if he still has it, how he got it and if it still works.
Good morning!
A radio that looks like a car battery.....
Kinda Cute!😍😍😍😍
What's the card in the background?
I have boxes of boards just like that, from some late 60s / early 70s scientific equipment.
I was wondering the same
Exactly like you said not sure what it's out of though. Lots of good American-made components for parts
I do that with those scam callers also.... mess with them. LOL Put the phone in front of a speaker or run a tool. Whatever they disturb me of doing. Waste their time too.... LOL. My stepdad worked for NAPA 38 years, he'd love that radio.
I found a radio disguised as a Cadillac once. It was so realistic the cops even pretended to arrest me.
Cute little radio. Wonder what the cranking power might be.
I have beed Digging the Radio Videos !
Bart Simpson radio repair
Baking soda works great to clean those battery terminals. Does it supply it's own power or maybe it has sulfate and a dead cell.
Thanks for shareing
Great vid and advice.
Nice one Shangs
Back when I was in grade school in the 70's, I had a plastic snoopy Peanuts character transistor radio. I wonder how many different novelty radios were actually made.

'and yes it is Honkoidial'
For a novelty radio this example is one that you would actually want to keep around. I would have expected one IF & 6 transistors.
i have one of these, it's for Atlas batteries is all! never tried it out.
I like the top firing speaker.
Some of these radios looked like they could tune something from outer space.
how do them little radios compare to the old tube radios with the same about of stages
in my language "napa" is a belly button
simple video. pretty good!
That case looks like a rather decent 3d print! (which off course it isn't. And off course i see the injection molding marks on the rear side)
Would be funny to have a 12Vto 9V convertor so you can run this radio from a REAL NAPA car battery!Wonder how long it would play?It is a nice little radio.Never seen one of these. The board and speaker back in the case does make it sound better.
Cool radio
