    I know I have a reputation for viewing your videos more than once, but I think I'm setting a record with the number of times I've viewed this one. I think I FINALLY "get" the role of alphabetical characters in Zettelkasten numbering.

    Thank you brother! Really glad to be here since the podcasts. You saw a question from an 3 month video and made one today to clarify some points. Just amazing.

    Thanks, Scott, for this post. It is of great help. It was eye-opening to me when you said that individual numbers are not really important as long as we have an actual sequence (order, or structure) of our cards.

    Bro, I'm glad I'm not the only one thinking that Ahrens is not always on point, it seems like so many people just blindly agree, it's pretty frustrating

    I wrote my thesis almost 30 years ago using something like this system without even knowing it had a name! Lol! I developed it after becoming frustrated with taking notes on a sheet of paper and losing the references or wanting to separate out thoughts from the same reference (if that makes sense). My numbering system was no way this complicated 😅 but I wasn't working on such a complex projects.

    Thank you--yes, I have a bunch of cards to 'catalog' but have not but making that 'commitment' has been intimidating! Maybe I can do it now!

    Thanks for clarifying the one idea per card myth. As I went through Luhmann's Zettelkasten this struck me too. Many of his thoughts stretch over multiple cards. And Luhmann is not always brief in his note taking. Another thing is that Luhmann worked to develop a line of thought.

    For as good as computers are these day and all the myriad ways developers have of programming them, it's interesting to me how difficult it is to replicate all of the flexibility of an analog system in the digital world. I still dream of someday having the ultimate digital tool that is as fluid and flexible as paper but analog systems will always have their place. Pen and paper will never go obsolete.

    I think you talked about this in an article or video, but something to consider looking the Luhmann zettelkasten, is that it seems that he left big spaces between the topics. So, in the second zettelkasten he would go to the 33/1 and then go to 33/5. Since he probably thought that between 33/1 and 33/5 he would maybe have something to put. In terms of letters he probably thought the same way. Below 33/5 he put 33/5c and not 33/5a, that would the logical first card in the sequence. Leaving big spaces seems to be a good practice, since, specially to begginners, you don´t have to think a lot about possible problems in inserting cards between preexisting cards.

    Such great content. The only question left to be be answered is if the comment at the end there (12:35) was an intentional pun... il-Luhman-nation.

    Hey, great stuff! Started Zettelkasten 2 months ago and love it. And now I finally know how to add new thoughts between existing ones. With negative numbers. That's genius :) I just wonder about one thing. I started my Zettelkasten from 1. Like thirst though I put in it was sth about luck. So 1 is my luck section. Then 2 became my "business section". So I would name new thoughts about business this way 2/1/1 ... You know what I mean? I got like 28 sections now (3 philosophy, 4 art, 5 love,... ) with a lot of sub sections branching out. Is it ok to do it this way too? Or will there be disadvantages compared to your style, where you pout these huge 4000 like numbers for new sections? And how do you set them up btw? How do you start? Thank you

      The value of the system is in the linking and the value of the links. And then looking at the gradual forming of ideas frm the bottom up. I have over 50 categories from a previous top down system I have. I just started creating permanent notes about 6 months ago and interlinking them. Have already used them to write 1/2 a non fiction book. So it is working

    I was wondering if Luhmann wrote directly on his note cards. The writing is too error free. I feel he first organised his thoughts else where and then copied those thoughts onto his index cards. What do you think?

    • @scottscheper
      @scottscheper  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      He wrote directly on his maincards and there's mistakes here and there. But have you tried writing by hand much? Because it's slower and more deliberate, there are less mistakes.

    Hi Scott, question: how often do you create a new division in the top number? You have antinet as 4100. How many, or how often do you make, divisions within that? I.e 4120, 4105, 4167?

    • @scottscheper
      @scottscheper  ปีที่แล้ว

      About 3-4 per year

    • @aaronwinter1105
      @aaronwinter1105 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@scottscheper I see I worded my original question quite badly. I meant: under what circumstances do you create a subdivision? You have 4100 on the antinet, does that contain subdivisions? I can see the danger of too many category subdivisions leading to more of a knowledge management system instead of a knowledge development system. But I can also see not creating any subdivisions having the danger of leading to hazy, indistinct thought. It might be an interesting topic for one of your videos to go through your antinet and pull out all the subdivisions in one high-level category and talk us through your thought process of why you decided to subdivide or not.

    Hi Scott, if I am not mistaken 4000 is for Formal Sciences, so if you don't mind I'd like to know what made you decide to install this branch under that Section. Thank you!!

    • @scottscheper
      @scottscheper  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Information Science falls under this, and Information Theory, which led me to install Zettelkasten section under this (4214). I then wanted to install this section (Thesis writing) nearby its closest neighbor which I determined was Zettelkasten (4214).

    would you find any benefit writing the id numbers in pencil? what happens if you need to change its location? do you wait until you have a complete concept to label them? when do you have to rewrite the card entirely? what are the conditions that make you rewrite a card due to error (if you have to cross out, more than once, etc) would like more information about processing cards practically since of course you can handle these items with a computer with ease but they are the more challenging aspects of the physical medium that creates friction. just getting familiar with your work so if you've already addressed this sorry (can anyone point me to a resource? tia)

      @@scottscheper Thank you for sharing! I remember in your older video on taking "Literature Notes", you mentioned that you had moved to quickly translating your bib notes to more fleshed out cards (I believe 3x5 colored ones to set them apart).
      Is that, in part, what we are looking at here on the table? It seems like sort of mix of fleshed out bib notes and also notes that are completely your own line of thought (like the continuation of the idea on how you should go about picking a topic).

    • @zachmorgan2880
      @zachmorgan2880 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      (Perhaps more clearly: Do you still write dedicated "observation notes" that are more expansive than the Bib card notes, and if so, do you do anything special to differentiate them from main notes? - thanks!)

  • @productivity6693
    @productivity6693 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    You made a typo in the collective. You wrote 4214/5 for time instead of 4216. Probably automatism because that's your section about Zettelkasten/Antinet right?
