- We are home from the Horse Progress Days and we wanted to share with you how things went on the farm while we were away! Jim & Brenda are back to work with the draft horses, mowing and raking hay! We have more Horse Progress videos to come, so stay tuned!

Jim and Brenda, welcome home to the farm. Your both very fortunate to have an experienced daughter like Abby to take care of things while you were away in Pennsylvania . Working draft horses won't sweat as much in the hot summer months if there fed good hay and grain . There's definitely a lot of extra moisture in green pasture mixes. It was nice to see June being lead by Jim for the first time outside on her own. The baled oats will make great cattle feed in the late fall and winter months. I realized you mentioned earlier that the under crop on the oat field is a mixture of timothy and alfalfa , Which should produce a great crop of hay for next season. Brenda was doing a great job driving the team on the hay rake at the end of the video.

Jim when we plan on using the horses hard for several days we dry lot them to dry then out some then after they're hard we let them have a few hours of grass to help with their digestive system. I was at horse progress days and the wife and i got to meet you and Brenda thank you for your's and Brenda's time i know it was alot of people trying to meet you and i didn't get to talk to you as long as i could have but thank you again keep up the good work

My experience with hay and grass is that when my horses are on grass they drink very little water. But when they are eating hay and grains they drink a lot of water just simply because it’s all dehydrated and they need water to digest it. Grass is full of water and therefore they probably sweat out the extra water. Just my 2 cents worth.

We get to enjoy the relaxing sounds of mowing and raking, but most folks don’t know how much work goes into getting there, maintenance on the equipment, sharpening, flat tires, greasing and oiling, let alone horse care. These folks are dynamo’s.

What a joy it must be to be out in the open air riding on the mower sulky and not listening to a tractor only the sound of the mower. Jim always explains what he is doing etc. Enjoy his videos especially when he is logging at Paul Smiths.

Hello from Wisconsin! How great to have a get away and talk some more about horses to lots of people! Trees growing in the wrong places are a pet peeve of mine, just ask our four kids, and there's that tree growing behind where you tie the horses up that doesn't really need to be there. So, someday when you don't have a thing to do...like there is ever a day like that! I married a farm girl with a good work ethic. Brenda, the Mrs. retired from nursing after 46 years at our local hosp. Our daughter is an RN as well. Stay cool cuz the heat index is going to be around 100 the next couple days!

Heh, I just finished doing exactly that, just without the horses. 67 oat bales wrapped and ready to be fed to rodeo bulls this winter.

My guess is that the green grass contains a lot of water . The dry grass doesn`t contain any . So when they are indoors you have to water them . Outdoors they get more water than they need so they sweat it out .

I understand the milky stage you are showing us. YES..just the little bit that we were shown of the Progress Days makes me smh about the organization and just the planning that went into that soiree...I want to go to one of those one day.lov from south alabama.
Horses held up in stables or yards have to be hard fed, hand fed, dry cured hays and grains. I guess grass is therefore soft feed; anyway its green and juicy, full of water, such that out packing, and I rode halfway across my state of New South Wales, in Australia, I discovered that if I couldn't find water, an hour grazing long roadside grass was almost as good as a drink.
When Jim spoke of the grass/sweat issue, I had already noticed fat, juicy green grass fat, popping out around the harnesses. Fat and soft after only six days turned out with no work and no hard feed. No harm done at all but they will have to sweat it off, and it'll take a week or two to get them back into top shape.
Those look like good oats, no rust from what I could see, seems almost a shame to cut them green! We have terrible rust here, and hard to get heavy oats like the old days. I have 20 acres in and it headed out June 23, now turning, earlier than usual but this year has been weird. Combine is ready to roll, and just going over the binder as I have a chap looking to thresh some rye and barley and wants it cut with a binder. Hope you got those oats rolled and wrapped before the monsoon rains came the other day!

Some one is getting a lot of exercise walking with the horses. I guess a magnet does not stick to a horse hip like a tractor or 'other' equipment. Walking and changing the view is almost like using a drone except using the legs and arms a lot more. Good job Brenda!
Sounds great to me that you caught this patch in the right time. Will it be for sale as wrapped silage . I dream of the times that I may be able to work with you on a barter scale and camp at the logging cabin . I appreciate you all and your kindness !
Thanks for teaching me when the grain of oats is ready to harvest. I assume oats were like wheat where the grass was brown/gold color.

LOL I just seen the video of you and Brenda going to look at Duke and Earl... They were so young. I believe coming yearlings. I dont know which one of the foals were sired by that stud but that stud was really nice. I think you said one of the colts is a full brother to Baron if Im not mistaken. Hi Jim, like I mentioned before in a video, and I'm not a farmer or rancher, but I grew up 50 miles south of Plattsburgh N'Y' and lived in Vermont and noticed the wrapping of the round bails, but I do watch a few videos of farmers n ranchers out west and I don't the wrapping and I can never get an answer. I hope you see my post and tell me what the reason or why it's done. Thank you,
Yvonne I know you asked Jim but maybe I can help . Round bales are wrapped with plastic too keep the air out from green or wet hay from rotting 😊
what i have found over the 13 or 14 years of owning our horses we put the horses out early out in the morning for two or three hours and then later on when it cooler even when it comes to ridding and working our horses and they don't do very well during the day when its hot unless i hose them down that's seem to help before and after working and ridding

The clever cowgirl channel talks about high suger content on the green grass and bad horse metabolism witch i never heard of or saw with dude horses .
Makes sense if theres more suger in it the body has to matabalize differently .

How many acres of hay do you mow during the summer? It seems to me more than you possibly can feed to your horses and cattle! I know you sell some, too. But your horses are certainly hardened to do all that work even when it is hot.

About the sweating. I wonder if it has something to do with grass having a lot more water content than hay. The horses may be hydrated better on grass and running a little dehydrated on hay. Grass diet-they have more water in their system to sweat out, which is a good thing. When horses stop sweating, which is common in the South, that is a very serious condition. You don’t want that. You are probably not talking about your horses not sweating to that degree, but you want your horses to sweat. They cool themselves that way.
Your right sweating is the way the body whether it be human or horse cools itself
Has that seat ever broke when you were mowing on your mower?
not this one, but years ago I had one brake, it was a quick ride to the ground.

Will one horse on a team try to be lazy and let the other horse do more work??
if you look at the video with Earl and Duke, when Duke hangs back will give Duke a light tap on the rump to encourage Duke to keep up with Earl's pace this all part of Jim's training process.

I noticed in the one video YOU must have enjoyed not having to talk as much.
Why don’t you use Duke as much as Earl, he needs to learn, that way you have two experienced teams
Probably cause dukes eager and earls lazy and needs to get in shape
It's hard to train two at the same time get one going good then work on the other
You can only give your very best to one youngster at a time. Duke will get his turn. Right now Earl and Baron are well matched in their paces and speed of walking, which Jim probably finds inspiring. What he is doing is "making" these horses quite separately, as each will need a coacher for quite a while yet.
