@shri03992 - and the more people that recognise this and reflect it in their buying then the sooner the whole market will move to pole-line - supermarkets will soon get the message if the non-pole line tins are left on the shelf. Just spending 5 seconds making the right choice in the supermarket can exert real pressure to change this industry - check the tin and ensure you pick the pole-line caught fish.

@u4987 I totally agree with you! pole-line catching is the only option and I'm always glad to pay more for these fish

Fair enough that use of FADs attracts a diverse range of fish and therefore increases the risk of by-catch, and avoiding use of FADs helps to reduce this. However, where tuna schools to occur and can be targeted by purse-seine nets they will often be targeting schools of prey species themselves, and this attracts other fish varieties, sharks and dolphins, so there is still a significant risk of by-catch. The optimal fishing technique in my opinion is pole-line caught fish.

@LouisianaGatorGirl there should be a complete ban on tuna fishing for a couple or more years with gradual return to sustainable fishing. When they bitch about losing employment, the answer is there will be no employment for eternity in that field once the tuna go extinct, better to sit out for a few years for the population to recover. These fishermen should then be employed in programs to help tuna stocks to recover.Has worked with tribals in many developing countries who used to hunt them b4.

Yes, Tuna should on be allowed to catch Tuna using rod and reel only. 1 fish per rod at a time! Thats how you can save the species! Not catching small size tuna with a net!

There is no such thing as "sustainable" tuna fishing. Tuna stocks are depleted worldwide and the fish are in danger of extinction.
