This is the second review video of yours I have watched. Very good stuff... In the mid-70s, I owned a Cobra 139, a 23-channel AM/SSB rig, if memory serves. When the transition to 40 channels occurred, I installed a rotary switch and added crystals to extend the rig's reach to 27.505. I had previously modified the clarifier to slide, I believe, 20kHz, enabling access to frequencies between channels 22 and 23, as well as those between every fourth channel. Back then, there was significant SSB activity between channels 15 and 16. It was an enjoyable setup, especially with a 500-watt linear amplifier bridging the radio and the antenna. The amplifier's power demands were so great that I had to upgrade the alternator in my Blazer; otherwise, the lights would dim so severely at night that the road became invisible. Those experiences, among others up until the mid-80s, steered me towards becoming a ham operator.
THE CONTEST IS CLOSED, I WILL BE ANNOUNCING A WINNER TODAY 4-17-23 THANK YOU FOR ALL THE SUPPORTS MORE VIDEOS TO COME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm glad to see Cobra doing a Classic model with FM. Honestly I think FM should have been something US CB had a long time ago. We live on a multi family small homestead here in Missouri and I'm trying to get the vehicles fitted with multiple radio types. Of course this is taking a while lol. I've got 2 more studying to get their amateur license My Daughter Age 9 and My Wife. Already Helped get my mother in law and her mom licensed. so Ham, GMRS, and CB is what we are fitting in the vehicles for well just in case I suppose but to use for fun and for work when necessary. Great video really appreciate your thorough examination of the radio. Thanks 73.
I subscribed. I liked. I shared. I'm retired and on a limited income and don't really have the money to buy a radio. But I would love to own a CB radio for my ole pickup truck. When I was a kid we didn't have cell phones, the CB was how we kept in touch with one another while we were driving around. I'd love to bring back those ole memories by installing a new CB radio in my pickup.
I would love this radio to be able to communicate with my non Ham friends that wanna have a radio for local comm but aren't motivated enough to get their license. I'm excited for FM on CB and to see what that brings to the table. Great video! 👍
Recently got into the Radio Hobby! I've been seeing Cobra 29 LTD Classics all over youtube. This looks to be a gem with FM feature. I'm looking to build my Radio supply...this would be my missing link to have one of the Best radio's in the industry!!!. I've subscribed, like, Shared, and commented. I look forward to seeing more videos and learn more about CB Radios. 73's!
Good to see your videos! I think FM will help get more people using the service since they can get rid of the noise. From a use perspective, I would set it up as part of a "Channel 3" project I'm hoping to start in my community. It would allow more individuals to get assistance if ever needed.
Its been around for three years for people to use. Why in the world would fm get people using it? I have never heard anyone on 11 meter fm to this day. Its not catching on.
I'm a fairly new ham and have never owned a CB radio. What got me searching CB's was I read that it's easy to use and there is quite a lot of traffic on CB. What has me very interested is that the same base antenna setup can be used on 10m and CB. Fortunately I found a link where someone recommended this radio which is how I found your channel. Great video. Thx
Thanks for the comment and good luck remember to share like and subscribe !!! 73 I use my 5/8 for 10m myself but it is always good to be able to monitor everywhere. I am not your typical CB hater ham, I just see it as part of the 2 way radio hobby just like Amature radio, FRS,GMRS,MURS Etc,
I like the cobras 29 simplicity. It makes it a lot easier to operate when driving. I’ve seen the more expensive cb radios but they have all the menus and updates I really don’t want to have. We have enough of all that all ready. Maybe they could move the FM switch to a in and out push button, or a up and down switch like we’re channel 9 is since it’s really not needed anymore. This would be a great cb radio in my pickup truck when I drive I 35 from central Texas to Dallas to visit my daughter and family. Great video and excellent review on it.
I have a clasic 29 ltd now. I've owned a cobra since 1973. I will never buy or own any other radio. I love it's ease of operation. The Wild Woodpecker.😊
This radio looks just like the 29LTD Classic I have in my Pick Up for traveling. Cobra has always been a great standard of CB radios. The one problem i see is how they select AM/FM, the push button on the channel knob is to easy to activate. I am like you in that Cobra should change the color in the meter or the channel, maybe add a LED as the channel/meter might not be seen in bright light. Great look at a great radio. 73 N9TDE
Blessed love to all, Great video as usual bro, I do have one down here, it's a damm gud radio, the older one without the FM, watching from Jamaica west Indies !!
FM is nice and it’s super clear, seems like you can talk a lot further with less power. Even made some barefoot contacts on FM where otherwise it would be too noisy. SSB is still king though when it comes to distance especially for DX. The only thing that an operator needs to watch on FM is the power since it’s all RMS basically all dead key and when you are running an amp make sure you are not overdriving the thing.
I've tried FM on 11m a few times, even once years ago with another ham (Did I say that out loud?). It sounded great back then but the couple of people I talked to recently didn't sound so good. It will be interesting to see how many people start using FM. I'm guessing it's going to be too little, too late. I hope I'm wrong. I'd like to see 11m make a comeback since I frequent both the ham bands and CB, but I don't think FM is going to do it, of course. We need another Smokey and the Bandit type movie. lol
There are 40 total channels I.E 40 individual frequencies. You can run two different modulation modes on each frequency ie AM or FM. There are not different channels/ frequencies for each mode if that makes sense. Please like And subscribe I appreciate the support and thanks for the comment.
FM is able to provide near interference free reception, and it was for this reason that it was adopted for the VHF sound broadcasts. These transmissions could offer high fidelity audio, and for this reason, frequency modulation is far more popular than the older transmissions on the long, medium and short wave bands. In addition to its widespread use for high quality audio broadcasts, FM is also used for a variety of two way radio communication systems. Whether for fixed or mobile radio communication systems, or for use in portable applications, FM is widely used at VHF and above.
@@kc9cuk the only drawback with fm is, in order to take advantage of fm ?, is the other end has to have a cb with fm as well. otherwise, fm is useless. will it take off ?..time will tell.
Great review on the radio! I came across it trying to learn more about it. This is the only model my company store is offering. However winning one would be such a blessing. I have driven for Werner for the last 2.5 years and have been using my cobra 29 lx. I love having my radio, it’s helped so many times already getting around wrecks or to just have conversation. Im not sure but I think my radio has some problems and I don’t know where to take it to get repaired and maybe even upgraded. So I’m just now trying to learn more in depth about radios. Wanting to put one in my 4Runner now too. What advice do you have for my 29 lx and also for the one in your video? If I don’t win the drawing I may purchase from my company and I want to upgrade as well.
I am not a advocate for amplifier use on 11m/CB so I can't help you sorry. I understand it is accepted practice on CB but that is not my thing good luck with your instal. Please subscribe it really helps the channel thanks
The uniden model (pc 78) has a switch like the brt/dim or ch9 on the front that is labeled am/fm…..I believe they did a much better job at it than cobra with just a dot and hidden push button….on the uniden you can actually see a switch and label which is much better functionally and visually in my opinion
That's a interesting thought, I know Cobra follows the videos so maybe we will see that in a new radio. Thanks for your comment, please subscribe, like and share the video it really does help.
Range would be similar on FM,AM, and check out my new 75 all road video to hear what FM sounds like. Thanks for the Comment! Please like the video and subscribe to the channel it really helps and we appreciate it.

Somebody needs to make a video on how to set the fm deviation on 29ltd and 29lx .
