  • Do you want the best #cutting experience with your #chainsaw? When you are cutting #firewood out on your #farm, the best way to sharpen your chain is the fastest and easiest way so you actually do it! That is my opinion at least. Many of us like getting under a good light with a saw in a vice using a fresh file and bringing the best possible edge back to our saws. I like it for about 1 loop of chain but shortly after I realize I have 4 more to go from yesterdays firewood cutting saga, I no longer get excited filing yet another chain especially as the file starts to wear down.
    Do you share this experience? Sometimes are you trying to beat the light and just need to get the saw cutting again? Check this video out and see if this sharpening style has you covered. Corded or battery powered, we have you covered!

      The rakers need filed, but know your limits. High rakers are a feature of anti-kickback chains. The chain will bite deeper if the raker is lower, but at the expense of saw safety. If you file the rakers and use that chain for pruning, you are more likely to saw your head in half.

      Thank you for watching. Do you mean something like a Stihl 2 in 1? If so, I have never used one but I have come behind numberous people that have and I have found the chains to be fairly rough. I actually find that this tool allows me to get a good vantage point on what I am doing because I can focus more on the angle rather than pushing a file through and keeping an angle from behind. I also recommend getting proficient at hand filing because it sure does help understand the concept the best. Again, I appreciate you watching and commenting!

      @@oakiewoodsmana sharpener which attaches to the bar will help with keeping the gullet and cutter consistent as you move through each tooth. I like the idea of the power sharpener, especially when I’m getting older and as the day goes on I’m not going to be that great with a hand sharpener. The file is still my go-to as it is easy to carry and doesn’t need batteries. With a power sharpener one can easily cut down into the gullet. Seen good things about the Granberg sharpener. They have both manual and power versions which attach to the bar.

    Congrats Ted. Neighbor Joe, Great video. Looks like that product is very handy. Ive never been much on field sharpening "i probably should be" ive always just kept spare sharp chains on hand. Once a chain gets dull, i swap it out. Every evening after cutting me or my father, sits down and shapens all of them on one of our old oregon bench grinders. Thats probably a slower option for people that are good and quick with a file, but these grinders just make everything precise. On doing the rakers. Since they dont have to be done that frequently i just hit them with a file a few licks while i am sharpening them on the grinder. We tried one of the HF grinders years ago and we used it for just a little while. The quality just wasnt there as comparded to the Oregon grinders. Just the way we have done it for decades. We become creatures of habit, lol.

    I'm still iffy on those things. I'd never use it in the woods just because I only take what's on my fallers harness. Wouldn't wanna carry a die grinder. I have a die grinder in my shop, and I ordered some oregon bits for it, I just haven't brought myself to try it yet. I'm too comfortable filing. I agree if you can't file that thing is just gonna make the same mistakes but faster. I might try them one day. Pro tip, check tsc for husqvarna files. Around here they're 2 packs for 5 bucks Canadian, so about 2$ usd a piece. They last way longer than any other file I've tried but they're also really aggressive. They take a ton of material off. That's either good or bad, depending on how ya look at it.

    • @oakiewoodsman
      @oakiewoodsman  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Since you out there falling 30 acres of timber running around, this would not be a good option. If I think about it, this truly is more of a firewood guy where your wood comes to you. When I was out working the other day and was running around cutting trees up, I kept moving my truck because all of my supplies were in the truck. That is not sustainable in a position like you are in for sure.
      I have heard good things from Zeromark, one of the guys often in the comment section on my videos and in the chainsaw community. He buys those himself. I think he was saying Amazon was the best place to buy them I think. I have not seen the Husqvarna Files at TSC down the road, but I will check there next time I am around.
      As far as your Oregon bits, I think they will work well but they change in diameter rapidly as you use them from what I have heard and seen. That is the primary reason I never got them. I didn't want my "file" getting smaller with every tooth. The Diamond ones that I have been using only shrink when the diamond is gone off of the cylinder.
      Thanks!

    • @canuck7268
      @canuck7268 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @oakiewoodsman that's my thoughts as well, the area I'm cutting is almost a mile from where I can get to by truck. I take a side by side to the forest edge and then walk the rest. In an open yard or cutting blow downs etc I could see it, if you can keep your truck handy.
      I know the stone files will shrink nicer time, but I'm not sure by how much. If you think about it a file can shrink as you use it too. Is ir enough to make a difference? I dunno, I don't think so. I was looking at the diamond bits but every one I looked at had terrible reviews. That's why I went with oregon stones. I forgot the name of the file bits you were using.
      Now, could this grinder be a good thing for on the shop bench at the end of the day? Probably. I'm known to let my saws get a little duller than I should near the end of the day because I can do them on the bench vise at home, which is much easier. The other concern I have is heat. I saw in the video there appeared to be smoke coming off your chain teeth after you pulled the grinder away (I'm not talking about the material while you were grinding). But again will that hurt the chain? I dunno. Only 1 way to find out I guess.

      @oakiewoodsman  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @canuck7268 oil was burning off. No discoloration to tooth or burr. I was wondering the same thing. I think all the bits are likely the same but it is hard to say for sure.

  • @StoptheLie
    @StoptheLie 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    The reason I replace chains and don't sharpen in the field was the procedure we used when cutting fireline during initial attack - old habits are hard to change. The swampers carried extra chain so we could keep moving without having to stop and sharpen chain, it's much faster just putting a sharp chain on. When we got back to camp we used the vice on our trailer work bench - I like standing up and harnessing power from my lower body when sharpening. Using that tool would be easier on the body especially the wrists.

      Makes total sense, in a production environment and daily cutting, you have a routine that just works and has been used often. How many extra chains did you have? Did you sharpen on the saw or did you have some sort of jig that you could mount the chain on and file? Thanks for sharing. I may someday change my routine should I find a better way. @@oakiewoodsman It's easy to procrastinate. After I finally got the silver maple down (I mentioned it on another video; it didn't go quite where I wanted and clipped a bush), limbed, and applicable pieces bucked, I knew I was going to need to clean my saw before I used it again. It helped to have a plan (I knew rain was coming within an hour, so I started splitting the logs until it started raining, then I took care of the saw).

      @@oakiewoodsman when I go in the forest to cut, I bring three different size saws with a chain on the bar and two extra chains for each saw. My days of limbing and cutting small saplings and branches with a large saw are over, I grab my Stihl MS 260 pro for tops or husky 550XP. In the 70's fighting wildfire, the swampers carried three extra chains and files etc in case we had to sharpen on the line. I usually sharpened with the chain on the saw and with a trailer workbench vise. Some used a grinder when we where at our home base doing trail construction. We flew with at least 7 or 9 saws and purged the gas tanks.
