I'm Vietnamese and use chopsticks on the daily and really appreciate when non-Asian people use chopsticks when eating traditional Asian foods. Your point about keeping artifacts in their original context is on point and I think utilizing them to eat food IS the main use compared to when non-Asian people put it in their hair lol
I agree! I'm Half Chinese, and I feel that as long as it's not unique artefacts that are being removed from their original country, bringing back souvenirs is harmless and actually quite a lovely form of appreciation.
I'm asian from Philipphines and I think that is awesome that you can take a piece of a country to yours as long as you do it to respectfully use it and show it to others with the appreciation we would, not only being like whatever about it. Take it as an opportunity to learn about it and to buy from local artesans

I LOVED the part on this video that u questioned the existence of souvenir and museums kinda in geral. Super important to be always thinking an rethinking our ideias :) but I have to admit that I need to study a little bit more about it before I can give my opinion about it
I'm from Japan. I say that the "meaning" of chopsticks in Japanese culture is simply that it is a utensil for eating food. So as long as it isn't taken out of the context of eating then I say the "meaning" is maintained. So yes, if I saw a plain, wooden chopstick in a museum or displayed in someones home and never being used, I'll think it's weird. The only exception for displaying chopsticks, in my opinion, is it its made out of gold or diamonds or if the emperor kissed it or if it was someone's dying wish. I considered other examples and I realized that a lot of Japanese artifacts have "meanings" and "purpose", but they can be appreciated outside of Japan- just as long as they are being "used". Here are two examples. One is "Daruma" (search it up for a picture) which is a Japanese doll. It comes with its eyes not painted. You make 2 wishes or goals, and when each is accomplished you paint in an eye respectively. See? As long as you "use" it for the purpose, it can be displayed in your home, museum, the lobby of Trump tower- and I say its fine. Another example that I can think of from Japan is the "good luck charm" (oh by the way these are two examples from Japanese buddhism - quite the dominant religion/culture here). There are many kinds of "omamori" (search it up for a pic) but they usually there to "protect" you or bring good luck for your education/exams. So yea, you can bring this with you anywhere or put it in your house entrance- i guess the context is in the meaning and its function? :) im supposed to be studying for finals

I'm not sure if the plastic from take-away can be recycled... usually it's to oily for that so it ends up in landfills anyway, just wanted to point that out though I'm not sure if that's true in US
As an Indian, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with you bringing back artifacts from places you visit. It’s a beautiful amalgamation of cultures when we learn from each other and adopt what we like from the other side with respect. For example: Americans doing yoga is so beautiful to me, I love it. And it makes little sense to say that galleries or museums are run by white people. Maybe in the US but in India, they’re run by other Indians; in China by other Chinese. The purpose is to preserve what we know will slowly be forgotten.

i'm afghan and not many people use things from my culture but when they do , like the food or makeup or dress etc i like it because i like people embracing and using things from other cultures. I only don't like it when people take things from other cultures and act as if its their own. as long as you acknowledge the culture you're borrowing from then i think its great
okay heres a few things about sustainability that we don’t really discuss. our society has been sooo sexist with this issue. its shoved down women’s minds that hey getting a plastic straw at starbucks is wrong cuz you’re destroying the planet but i haven’t heard anyone tell that dude to stop buying new cars every year. it also goes beyond our reach. yes being conscious and recycling and reducing our plastic is amazing. but at the end of the day if companies like shell and amazon are still working the same way, the one plastic bag we get at the grocery store doesn’t change much. dont get me wrong im an environmentalist and love taking care of this planet but its time we hold big corporations accountable and stop blaming the people living in society especially women
@@zehray.8940 can you tell me why? because as a women im so tired of hearing "stop using plastic straw" or "pay more for vegan make up products products" or "be vegan cuz it saves the planet and also helps you get in shape". again im not saying its only towards women. but i feel like society took the whole sustainability concept and made it into an advertisement for women.
