END OF A HISTORICAL NEIGHBORHOOD?? | Exploring Tanglin Halt: Before & After

- Cycled around the historical HDB estate of Tanglin Halt recently, and decided to capture some footage of things going on there. I also remembered I cycled there almost a year ago and filmed some stuff too, before certain places faced demolition. As a result, I ended up making a video that explores the changes that Tanglin Halt went through over the span of nearly 1 year. Enjoy!
I used to get my bike repaired in the bicycle shop. Now they have shifted to Telok Blangah. Enjoyed my bike rides there from time to time. Inspired by this video to go there again . Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for this wanderful vedio. Brings back old memories when I was staying in blk 38 tanglin halt. 20 years in Tanglin halt bring back sweet memories of my childhood where is used to play football, speak takraw and kite flying. I also used to work at a mee goreng stall owned my mus for $3 a day....ohhhh I will miss the neighbourhood...God bless the people who stayed there...
I visited this tanglin halt area once back in 2006, when there was the food craze going on by makansutra and the various food shows. They led me to that block where theres a coffeeshop selling chicken rice. The place was packed back then. I remember taking a stroll through the surrounding rows of shops with my partner and we remembered the econ minimart and old chap huey tiam. Seeing the familiar corner at 1:50 suddenly jolted my memory, i felt sadder with the background music, as i imagine the place must hold much more memories for the residents, much more than the only trip i made there nearly 2 decades ago
Used to pass thru Tanglin Halt quite a bit during the early 2000s coz I worked close by. The place had such a nice laid back charm that causes one to be relaxed. Food at the small market was very affordable and yummy! I had a chicken rice (medium portion ), a drink (TEH tarik or soyabean) and dessert (bean curd) all for under < SGD$10!!! The place was basically an old town for many retirees and folks who were fortunate enough to own a home there. It had a natural rustic feel that will now be lost forever! 😢
I think the government is insane. Like how many people do they expect to cram into this tiny island?!!
Look at the spaciousness between the blocks & the open greenery between them.
The present lot of HDB designers & planners are confused. Just look at new estates with ugly tall BTOs cramped in small spaces with no open greenery. 🤦♂️
We were often told we should have a sense of belonging here but the constant demolishing of buildings and schools and replacing with cold cramped tall buildings that we feel unfamiliar with are not helping. i know the need to renew and redevelop but the continuous eradication has uprooted whatever remnant nostalgic memory we have for the place we grew up in.

my grandma use to stay at the Blk 43 Tanglin Halt Road and the vibe is very slow pace environment
watch with teary eyes, i used to stay at holland close and every weekends will go '16 storey' to have dinner with my family when im young. Now i move to commonwealth drive blk 50 but sad to see the market have been demonlish, every week i will bring my kids go cycle and walk around this old blk and tell them those oldies stories lol
