Beautiful recording. I came t6o know this concerto as the flip side of Haydn's D Major cello concerto. Antonio Janigro the cellist; Westminster label, vinyl.

Ever since Maurice Gendron, back in the Sixties, first revealed to the world Boccherini's original version of this concerto, the heavily bowdlerized version we hear in the present recording has become obsolete. And, well played though it be, Du Pré's approach, favoring Romantic legato over Rococò articulation, makes it sound all the more dated.

It's rather Friedrich Gruetzmacher than Luigi Boccherini... I mean it's a fake...

Yeah, this piece is more of a "boccherini fantasy" lmao. Gruetzmacher just took some themes from various Boccherini works and turned them into a concerto that sounds way to romantic for the time period it was trying to replicate. Nonetheless, the piece is enjoyable and very well-written. The original does have a totally different flare and style, though. I like both.

There is another way to look at this: Boccherini was a mediocrity of a composer and was rescued from obscurity by the excellent work of Friedrich Grutzmacher! To modern ears, the excessive ornamentation employed by Boccherini seems out of place.
