I'm currently writing a university essay about the introduction of the guitar into West Africa and its impact on Mande musical traditions... absolutely loving the various videos of Djelimady and other great guitarists that TH-cam has to offer!
This style of playing began in Mali, West Africa on instruments like the Kora and Ngoni. Since the 1930s and 1940s they began using guitars, but played the same basic style. The style is very old and predates the black American blues men whose ancestors originally brough the it to America during the slavery days. Modern blues and many rock guitarists (Eric Clapton, Jimmy Hendrix etc) acknowledged and copied the style into their own. Music historians acknowledge that the origins are African.
Thanks. I am familiar. I'm just f'n around. I used to do Super Rail tours back when I was a kid. Been a while though. I'm pretty tight with Youssoupha Sidibe. He's a good player.
Cool stuff! I hope you didn't mind my asking. Please give Youssoupha my respects - I've just been listening to more of his music - he's even better than I remembered! Peace....
Ahh - Youssoupha Sidibe & Mystic Rhythms - yes he is an excellent Kora player, though I'm not too familiar with all of his work. When you say you used to do Super rail tours - what do you mean? Are you a musician also? Anyway, I'm happy you are familiar with this great music. Peace...
Une des valeurs sûres et irrévocables de la musique malienne. Le vétéran de la guitare
This man is a legend. 🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿.
Mansa Djelimady Tounkara embodies the spirit of Mande.
Es brillante, es propio, muy suyo, no imita, un gran guitarrista.
Djelimady Tounkara is one of Africa’s greatest musicians. First heard this song in secondary school on a compilation CD I had bought with my allowance
Now that was African culture and heritage. That is something to be proud of.
Only Afrikaans in the continent and at the DIASPORA can give such a pleasure and uniqueness of instrument and melodies indescribably beautiful.
He's a master. He may be the current kora master. I have sat with him as he played 7 hours without intermission.

Yeah I'm a musician but I was just a hippie kid on the road following them around. They were one of my Grateful Deads so to speak.
