- In this video I show you how to make a wirework snake braid bracelet. Please feel free to give it a go yourself and I hope you enjoy.
This is my original design and you are free to recreate this piece of jewellery if you like and also to sell any pieces you make from this as long as it is not commercial or wholesale, but please refrain from reproducing a tutorial for this in any way.
Materials:
1mm wire (18 gauge)

To Jennifer Haden. I hope you get this as I can't seem to reply straight to you. I can't say for sure as I haven't tried it, but maybe try a bit of the glue on a bit of scrap wire and see how it reacts and sets. Sorry I couldn't be of more help :-)

+Stephanie Sharp I've just made this out of copper wire (with a difference) as a necklace.. if you create it open ended, and mold it to fit over the collar bones, it works really well.. It's an awesome inspirational piece. I sell a lot of this weave in different wires and metals..

Very nice video, and easy to follow. I was wondering, would it make it easier to work if you clamped the starter end to a flat work surface? And would taping both ends help keep wires from rolling as you work with them? I am going to start making wire work jewelry along with others, and I am a man with big hands. Trying to come up with solutions to make it easier for me to work with. Thanks!
+Mark Bramer Thank you very much. You certainly could do that if you feel it would make it easier to work with. I personally prefer to have free movement, but it is completely individual choice. Whatever works for you. As for taping the other ends of the wire, you could certainly try, but I'm not sure if it would work that well. But worth a try :-)
Believe it or not ladies... Men Love this style..
make it a bit wider using extra strands of wire, and instead of the ribbon ends (which are really expensive here) use the wire wrapped loop and thread a wire through them, adding a clasp or magnet closure. I've haven't sold any to women yet, but I have sold three to men.

when starting this, use a straight piece of 2mm thick wire, long enough to be able to wrap back to form a loop or hook (hammered for hardness) and just curl the ends over like a loop, but make them really tight. Hold them in place with a teflon clamp (so you don't mark the wires) and then do the weave.. When finishing, just repeat the process in reverse. If you're making the loop first, be inventive, don't stick to the boring round loops, try triangles, diamonds, stars, or just squares with a little dent for the hook to rest in without slipping.
The hook end, will obviously need to be a longer piece of thick wire in order to make it, remember to file the ends.
i'll make one out of copper today and see if I can share a link for you to see.. I'm not confident to do a vid tutorial yet,.Still working on that :)

your designs are stunning and I have watched a few of your videos, what I was wondering, I have never seen you hardening any of your wires. do you find they still keep their shape in time without doing that? I am a beginner, and was told to always harden to have the wire stay in shape. Thanks in advance for your reply.
+Simone L Thank you very much. No, I rarely purposely harden my wire. I find that by braiding/weaving/shaping it, it makes it strong enough to hold it's shape, and also as you are working with it, it naturally gets work hardened from moving and shaping the wire. I hope that helped :-)

Hi i love all your video's. i have been making some jewlery for a few years mostly earrings .now i like to learn wire work. i was wondering what is the best brand and type of wire to use. plated coated wire good. all i find in our stores is cheap wire .if have a suggestion on a good brand i would so greatful .thank you
+groundhog260 Thank you so much. The wire I use is silver plated copper wire and it is a soft wire, but I can't really recommend a certain brand as it will depend on what is available to you in your area :-)

TripleMRocks No. I get different things from different places. It all depends what it is where I buy it. Sometimes I have a preferred place to get my things from like cord, thread, wire, gemstones or others, but other times I just shop where I can find it for the best price. So I really use many different suppliers.
what do you sell them for?
I have a quick question for you. I clicked on the link for the ribbon ends you suggested to use and 19.5 mm popped up. Can I use that size for the snake bracelet? Or do I have to use a different wire size in order to use the ribbon end size 19.5 mm? And do you have another website besides jewerllymaker.com where I can find some more wire? Hi again, you used 18 gauge wires in this project. I will have only 22, 24 and 26 gauges. If i go with 22 gauge wire, do you think it would be soft and not nice looking as yours?
+kyra kyrag You can use 22 gauge for this, it would just give you a different look. Be narrower and finer looking, but I think it would hold ok, as long as you put some kind of clasp on. You could always add more sections so it becomes a multi strand braid. I do have some other tutorials similar to that where I do actually use 22 gauge :-)
Very nice video! But how do you keep your braids so open? I really like that look, but when I try it, my braids naturally are very close to each other with no gaps between the strands, even though I'm not applying much tension. As a result, it look like the type of braid you would see with hair, unlike your open design. Is it the type of wire? I'm using a pretty small 20+ gauge wire; would that affect the design (other than the smaller size of course)? Also, conversely, while the strands of the braid are too close to each other, oftentimes the individual wires that make up each strand don't always lie flat and next to one another. Would using larger wire fix this? Thank you so much!
+The Polymer Buffet Thank you. They tend to just naturally end up quite open as it is more difficult getting braids close when using wire. Especially a thicker gauge wire. I do tend to use thicker gauge wires for these braids as I like the look and it also makes it easier to keep them flat like you mentioned, but I would think that 20 gauge would work fine as well as that is still on the larger size. But maybe try and step up the thickness of wire slightly and see if you get a different result :-)
It looks like that, in your braiding rhythm (good term), you use your thumb to hold the curve while you bend the wires and you sort of feel the open space and repeat it each time. I think your thumb placement determines the consistent openness and it's probably a result of so much practice. Just trying to make a helpful observation to this question. I think I'm starting to "feel" spacing this way.
What size ribbon end did you use?

iTube22100 Thank you. I think it depends a lot on what wire you use as some tarnishes more/quicker than others. The wire that I use I haven't had tarnish on me yet. Even the older/first pieces I made. The wire I use is a copper based wire that is then coated with sterling silver (then a colour if it is coloured) and then an e-coating which helps prevent tarnishing and makes it hypo-allergenic. There are things you can do to help avoid it tarnishing more or clean it if it has tarnished. Certain products you can use. I recommend looking on google for that as I have not used them myself yet. I hope that helped :-)
CSLdesigns Thank you very much for you answer. That's very kind of you. But you know, it is strange because for i.e. I made necklaces with gold chain. I kept them in plain air and they were always perfect. I put them on, not on the skin directly but over a sweeter and without any perfum, and they became black !! Also the copper wire...
