This is actually a replica of a legendary/historical duel in feudal Japan. The duel between Miyamoto Musashi (宮本 武蔵) and Sasaki Kojirō (佐々木 小次郎). Our protagonist here is actually Sasaki, who in history lost to Miyamoto.
Miyamoto almost lost to Sasaki, but improvised by using a paddle and defeated Sasaki with it. That's why Edge said to the protagonist, " Let's see how predictable you think I am now" when he switched to using the paddle here.

Furo I grew up reading Japanese manga and watching anime, and this duel is often depicted in various pieces.

Lol, I just found special strategy for this boss. Yes, you read that right. A strategy on the melee only boss.
You know how you can hold right click for a few seconds to charge your sword? If you hold right click before the level starts and charge fully, then you have a chance to one hit the boss. This only works for the first 2 rounds, though.
You also have to get lucky - this only works if the Edge uses his single slash attack at the start of each round. But charge then immediately block that in the exact right frame - and then attack immediately, he will die immediately, lmao
Doesn't quite one shot him in the other 2 rounds but it's still very useful. You can two hit him.
I used this strategy to beat The Edge in 1 minute 46 seconds on FURIEST mode. All categories were S

the game is great but really, really hard. This is the Furi difficulty (there is even a harder Furier mode) and I`m struggeling hard. Every fight is a new challenge and you need to study each step your opponent is taking, pretty cool!
How so, that shouldn`t be!? Is it easier or harder for you?
As you can see there is an achievment popping up when I finished him, you only get those on Furi or higher difficulty
He is doing that in the video as well. The hard part in this phase are the (five) flame walls he is spawning. The other attacks are pretty much alright, but the flames are devistating and will kill you in two hits
Coming from experience here, the 5 flames move is fully dodgeable. When he starts the move go to the oposite end as you did and blink past the first one. but as soon as you can, blink back to the oposite edge and repeat for the 5 flames. If you got the first one timed correct the rest should come fluidly. The annoying part is that the flame does half your health in damage so you NEED to dodge atleast 4.
And cutting out half your life makes this phase really hard. If you can survive it you are good to go and get health back with the parrying afterwards. 1/3 of life lost would be a better balance in my opinion.

Considering his heavy Miyamoto Musashi influence, they could have called him "The Kensei/The Swordsaint," but I guess they gave him a simpler title to fit with the naming theme.
30 minutes ago, I successfully defeated this boss in 94 seconds, 0 KOs, and 2 hits. I got my first S rank. Anyone done it faster?
Nowhere near,but after him kicking my ass for like an hour, I beat him for the first time without getting downed once

Jesus, I thought the previous boss was hard... this one is just fucking ridiculous. After trying for like half an hour I only got to the second phase like twice. The delay he does between some of his hits makes this fight downright annoying. I don't know how you're realistically expected to know how to block the hits with any consistency.
Incidentally, for those having difficulty with this boss, if you attack immediately after the first block on each attack chain, it will break the chain. With this method you can get to the 3rd phase in like 20 or 30 seconds. I still haven't beaten it (the third phase is pretty easy but having trouble with 4th), but the first two are very easy if you hit him immediately after each first attack.

This boss is just SOOOO much better and easier than Burst. I'd better block all of those attacks and feel good instead of playing Touhou with blades and chasing after that gal all over the map...
Actually, after I discovered, that you can start the fight with her by simply attacking her when she is reloading, the boss got really easy, until the last phase, which is actually not that hard too, you just have to stay a bit closer to the outer side and dodge repeteadly.
(then I discovered, that you have to play a second melee round after that bullet-hell and it made me kind of sad)
why was this boss much easier than the last??
He has no shield, his health bar starts as orange (health), not blue ("shield").
He's not easier, he just has less health. Fights against him tend to be one-sided because he loses health quickly but every attack is fast and will tear off huge chunks of your health if they land. Notice how the video doesn't show FAILED ATTEMPTS. Doesn't help that he changes the timing of his attacks later in he fight. Most people who have ACTUALLY played this game say either him or the Burst are the hardest fights in the game.

@@steamedrice97 I know this is old, but he's much easier than the burst, at least for me. It depends on if you're better at melee or ranged.
I was way better at melee, so I beat him first try. The Burst however...
Man this boss is awful... Worst one in the game by far. Complete luck!
